  1. Well it's like Kleene said. Europe is more than just Switzerland. I know for a fact that many big companies in the DACH (Germany-Austria-Switzerland) area use english as their main means of communication and think very highly of ETH alumni. I honestly think you wouldn't have any problems finding a job in your field in the area. That being said I would still encourage you to learn german if you decide to take the offer up. Not so much for your future career, but i heard it can be a pain in the ass to interact with authorities in english.
  2. No idea. I still think no interview is as good as a reject as of now. At least i got admitted to my masters half an hour ago ;-) Not getting the ESOP is not the end of the world. I suppose there's a lot of luck involved too anyway...
  3. You have to keep in mind though that ETHZ is probably even Top5 in Chemistry. So you're very likely to get into a higher ranked PhD program, if you do well and are able to do some research there. I can't really comment about job chances in the US if you have a European diploma, but then again Top5 should mean something even in the US industry. Also keep in mind that there is a lot of chemical industry in western-central europe, where you will easily get a job with a ETHZ diploma.
  4. No certainly not everybody is interviewed, that was kinda my point. People are shortlisted first and then - at least thats what official documents say - the people on the shortlist are interviewed. Sadly, one could conclude that that probably means that one's not on the shortlist if there was no invitation for an interview. On the other hand i have no idea when they start interviews. If you found someone from CS who already did his/her interview you might get a clue about that.
  5. Cool! Thanks for the in-depth information regarding the interview! The part about the undergrad thesis gave me something to think about. This question would suck though, since our undergrad thesis is basically just a literature review... Well, not my fault, i guess :-) I might hazard a guess. Keep in mind that this really is just a guess though, since i haven't really got any more information than you on that matter :-) Judging from the few gradcafe-survey results they seem to stick closely to the deadline, so i would not really expect an answer before, let's say, the 10th of March or so.
  6. Wait! Not going insane while waiting? That works?!? REAAAAAALY? WADADADAD UMEMEAM!!!
  7. I recently saw a Blog entry about the differences in culture of Caltech and Stanford. I'll see if i can find it again, it was quite amusing ;-) EDIT: Well not really a blog entry, but still amusing ... http://www.quora.com/What-do-California-Institute-of-Technology-students-alumni-think-of-Stanford-students-alumni
  8. Well I'll hold on to hope for as long as i can ;-) I don't think you should be worrying, by the way. As far as i understand it the rectorate will only decide on the scholarships after all recommendations of all departements are in. So all decicions will probably go out roughly at the same time. If you don't mind me asking, were the questions more technical or of a motivational nature, like were you asked why you wrote what you did or more about your general knowledge of the field(s)?
  9. Wow, congrats ;-) At least that really means you're on the shortlist for getting it. Did you already receive the admission email for the master? I'm starting to lose hope for the ESOP after your story though, since i haven't heard anything from them regarding an Interview. *sigh* And i really thought i had such a strong profile to at least get shortlisted. Well it seems there were a lot of even better physicists applying then :-( On the off-chance i'll still be interviewed i'd love to hear what kind of questions you were asked though! Congrats again, greetings, Mike
  10. There is a google group ZurichCalling and a lot of Alumni clubs for different fields...
  11. Yeah i guess so. It still freaks me out a little.
  12. No I actually meant admittance. I can certainly understand that people with a great gpa won't get the ESOP, since there is a lot more involved, especially the preproposal for example. But rejects for the Masters with such a gpa makes me wonder and a lot less confident about my chances...
  13. I swear i will go insane waiting for the admit and ESOP decision. I can't work or concentrate on anything. What i don't get is that people with a gpa of 3.97/4.00 seem to get rejected. I didn't even do a GRE since i have a gpa of 3.98 and thought that should be more than enough for admittance and it said it wasn't even needed for Bologna schools. Is there anyone who got the ESOP in the past or knows someone who did who can shed some light on the profiles?
  14. Not speaking from personal experience, but - at least to my knowledge - in most continential unis your application will most likely be decided by your prospective supervisor anyway. So it's a good bet that if you find a prof who is interested in the research you've done, you'll be admitted anyways. Even more so if you're not applying at the more prestigeous schools, like e.g. ETH Zürich, LMU Munich, EPFL Lausanne. For the time spent away I'd say it depends how you present it. If it it was in a closely related field or if you are able to conclusively argue that you realized your place was in research, then it will not matter much i suppose. In any case, if you apply for a graduate program anywhere in Europe (except the UK) the way to go is to write a letter to the profs directly. Think of a PhD in continential europe more like a job with additional academic training. Usually you won't get a supervisor assigned to you, but you have to find one youself, even after being admitted. Often the universities are posting their open PhD positions just like other job offers. Make sure you've checked first if there are any open spots in your area oft interest and try to apply to them directly. Good luck, Greetings Mike
