  1. Sure, I'd like to know. But only if it was a final decision, not something like 'I don't think they're going to accept you'. That's NOT useful, but knowing that you can definitively write off a university is good (as all of us waiting for confirmation of our 'implicit' rejections know...)
  2. Yuck, just saw the first rejection posted for UVA. I think everything will be resolved soon, one way or another.
  3. Thanks, minnares! Something else to check compulsively, lol...
  4. If that means they don't feel the need to send out rejection letters I will be cross. I think we all at least deserve a mass email, especially after they kept the whole 'only six acceptances' malarkey under their hats.

    New York, NY

Thanks for the insight, kahlan_amnell! I was really excited to get into Fordham, but was both excited/apprehensive about living in NYC. My Dad did his undergrad there, but that was quite a while ago...lol. What's this about problems with financial aid? The funding package they offered me unofficially seemed pretty generous- I wouldn't like to hear that it would be hard to get it...
  6. Thanks for the optimism, medievalmaniac! You're right, it has been a really odd year. Even if it is a rejection, a few more halcyon days can't hurt.
  7. Yeah, I saw that too and didn't think it looked auspicious. Very sad- I really liked the look of UVA, and it's only an hour away from my sis. I might be brave and give them a call next week (yes, I hate being that annoying person, but this process is making me neurotic...).
  8. My unis also seem to think silence is a great way to deal with applicants (maybe it's a test, lol). And thanks for the commiserations about Yale. I'm not too bothered though, especially since I already have an acceptance I would be happy at (isn't that the case with you too?). I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you too- may you have the luxury of choice :P

  9. I got the letter of doom from Yale as well- commiserations. But actually it wasn't my favourite of the unis I applied to, so I'm not that bothered! I just wish Cornell and UVA would let me know already!

  10. Anyone heard anything from UVA? I saw there were a couple of acceptances and then...nothing. I've not heard a thing!
  11. Acceptances piling up the results page, and I've still received no invitation to the Cornell party ! It should be resolved soon though, for better or for worse.
  12. Congrats, Popstitute! It's good to hear instances where 'implicit rejections' are proven wrong .
  13. I do hope they send out rejections promptly- I know that most of us have written them off completely, but some definite closure would be nice.
  14. Congrats on your CUA acceptance! Did they give you any details about the course/funding etc.? How does it feel to know that you can DEFINITELY go to grad school next year ;) ?

  15. I was accepted at Fordham, and my interests lie in the Medieval period (specifically in Medieval romance).
  16. Medievalmaniac- that's good to hear. I think this forum's obsession with 'implicit rejections' was making me believe the worst about some of my schools merely because a couple of offers had been made and I was still dealing with silence. We have to remember that we're still in the beginning of the acceptance process (unlike the scientists, who are pretty much done, right?).
  17. Five offers? Huh. It would serve them right if none of those chosen few accepted their offers. That number is so ridiculously low I feel that they should have published it on the website; most people on the board seem to have written them off entirely, making the application a waste of money. Am I being unfair?
  18. How about combining the advice of ScreamingHairyArmadillo and tomi. Definitely talk to the profs about your research interests to see which one suits you best, but don't discount the value of a visit. If you're worried about whether or not you'll be happy somewhere, then the vibe of the location will be very important. Who knows, you might love Berkeley. You can also then rest assured that you've done everything possible to make the best decision- fewer regrets that way. And try and block out people that tell you how amazing Berkeley is. Only you can really know if it's perfect for you. My sis got into Vassar for undergrad, and even though everyone always made the impressed face when she mentioned it in her list of acceptances, she ended up going elsewhere and hasn't regretted it for a moment.
  19. Congrats on your offers! Okay, this is my first time applying, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. Firstly, you have until April 15th to make your decision, right? Regardless of what the schools are encouraging you to do? So if you're undecided or waiting for decisions (or waitlist results) why don't you let the colleges pressuring you to make a decision know? I'm sure there are loads of other people in the same situation. If there was a school you definitely did not want to attend, then it would be courteous to let them know right away, but if you're still waiting I don't think it's rude or inconsiderate to keep your options open.
  20. I haven't heard from them either, and from reading other people's signatures it seems like lots of folk haven't heard anything. I'm not going to write them off just yet...
  21. Yep, I'm really pleased :) . Still no word from the others, though (including UVA). While the sample size is TINY and I hate to conjecture about this crazy-ass process, the fact that you, me and another Medievalist on the board haven't heard could mean that they haven't done medieval acceptances/rejections yet...

  22. Damn, they're notifying by post? This means that I won't know my fate for at least two weeks... :S
  23. Well, I think everyone has to have some sort of specific interest when studying Arthuriana, because there's just so much out there! I'm interested in the way Arthur is used politically in England (although I have not studied it much, only read some great crit about it), and I wrote my thesis on Gawain, who has to be the best Arthurian knight. I am not at all a fan of Lancelot and Perceval! Ahem. Anyhow, I combined old research with my own ideas. The great thing about Arthurian studies is that they've been going on since the nineteenth century, so I had some great Victorian criticism to include and evaluate, while the VAST volume of texts available to study meant that I wasn't just rehashing what others had already said. Also, Arthurian studies have been experiencing a bit of a rejuventation lately, or so I've heard. Suddenly Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur' is trendy again, and lots of critics are writing about it. What were you thinking of studying in Arthurian lit, Kam? Although some stuff has been done to death, there's still a lot of room for new scholarship I think.
  24. Firstly, adcomms would know your exact age, wouldn't they? I swear I've written my DOB on every single application. I agree with previous posters that experience wouldn't go amiss, but lots of people apply to grad school right out of undergrad. My big issue is this whole Masters thing- I did a Masters after my undergrad because I wanted to hone my interests and see if grad school was for me, and I was under the impression that this would look good. More training, you know? And now I keep hearing about schools that think having a Masters is a set back...it really makes my blood boil. I like to think of my Masters as an asset, not a shortcoming. Hmph. Sorry, rant at adcomms over. So, returning to the topic at hand: I don't think age plays a factor in decisions, seeing as so many students apply at your age (I'm 23, too) as well as at later stages in life. Good luck!
  25. Actually I didn't apply to JHU- I think minnares mentions it on my profile because she's watching results pop up for it while I'm doing the same for UVA! Good luck, though :) !
