  1. I already contacted the departments. I was told that I was "very" likely to be admitted to the one program, and I was told that I was relatively "high" on the other waitlist. I don't know how seriously I should take either responses, but I'm wondering if I should follow up with the programs at this point and ask about a visit - or if I should give it a little more time.
  2. At which point would you do this? How soon do students usually visit their programs?
  3. Question: how should a waitlisted student approach visiting programs?
  4. For some reason, the name "Crispin" makes me hungry. I imagine cripsy chicken when I hear it.
  5. The suspense on NYU is killing me. I want to know if my hope is delusional or not, god damn it!
  6. I have to ask... who or what is dfindley?
  7. I'd like to believe that I didn't hear from CUNY because I'm going to get a full-funding acceptance, but that probably won't happen
  8. This is random, but do you guys have any secondary ambitions if - for whatever reason - philosophy doesn't pan out? I also studied film production at NYU. I did stuff like this: I like to say that my situation is like being married, having an affair, falling in love with the other woman, and having to decide which to leave. I also recently finished interning for Louie, if any of you guys are Louis CK fans. It was pretty cool. P.S. In retrospect, getting into grad school would be much easier if I wasn't a double major in film production.
  9. It's hard not to despair at this point, haha. I'm just waiting on NYU, Princeton, Rutgers, CUNY, Columbia, BU, and maybe Harvard (if they didn't send all of the acceptances yet). And given the programs that have rejected me so far, I think it's unlikely I'll get into those programs, with the exception of BU. And I'm not even sure BU would be worth it.
  10. I think my statement of purpose is fine. I didn't customize it for every school - that's the only thing I can think of - but I doubt that'd be responsible for these rejections.
  11. Well, my intuition is that if I was going to get an offer from NYU, Crispin might have hinted at it. Or maybe not. So, yeah, I'm just not expecting to get in.
  12. Talked with Crispin today. I told him I believed my writing sample was killing me. He said something like, "Maybe. It had many virtues, but I think you're capable of a better writing sample." I told him about how I was writing a paper for Robert Hopkins in aesthetics and considered using it, but was advised to use my current writing sample instead. He mentioned that Rob was "really excited" about my aesthetics paper. That means that Crispin is on the committee and read Rob's letter, that Rob is on the committee and advocated for me, both, or that they just happened to randomly talk about me. I don't know what this means for my NYU application, but I'm going to assume the worst.
  13. We all secretly hate DHumeDominates. Just a little. (Along with that guy who got accepted to all top 10 programs.)
  14. For what it's worth, I emailed UW-M about my position on their waitlist, and Alan Sidelle responded to me, saying, "I can't be very exact just yet, but you are pretty high on our wait list." I'm taking that with a grain of salt. Incidentally, I just had a dream that I got waitlisted at Rutgers. Even in my dreams, I only get waitlisted.
  15. I feel like I did all of the above and yet I'm getting rejected everywhere^ P.S. I'd be into that networking invite.
  16. I wasn't sent anything concerning Yale. Likely that I'm rejected? Or is it possible that I'm waitlisted?
  17. Waitlisted at UW-M. I would be happy to study under Shafer-Landau (while probably trying to show that moral realism is incorrect).

  19. No problem! Good luck Oh, and someone should consider making a separate thread for this. It's sort of an interesting topic.
  20. Yeah, but my thought is fairly superficial. I never even considered applying to Notre Dame primarily because it seems to fall far outside my areas of interest, so I know very little about the department beyond hearsay. But the impression of Notre Dame that has been painted to me is at least worth considering.
  21. To be clear: I was being hyperbolic.
  22. I have sympathy for the philosophers of religion out there. I actually got into philosophy because of philosophy of religion. But you need to distinguish what is fun/interesting in the present from your ultimate endgame. That's my opinion, anyway. This might warrant a separate thread for those into philosophy of religion.
  23. Which is why my friend has a good strategy. He's doing metaphysics that is highly related to cosmological arguments, but his papers aren't directly related to philosophy of religion. He can trick a program into hiring him, get tenture, and then spend the rest of his career publishing on philosophy of religion. Genius!
