  1. I really do feel bad (honest!) I will make my decision ASAP - for the sake of everyone on the waitlists, but mostly for my own sanity.
  2. Hi, thank you so much for the congratulations. My field is nominally Postcolonial, but with my interdisciplinary interests they could've read my application in a number of other ways. I'm not sure if the acceptance are going out in rounds, but good luck to everyone still waiting.
  3. Thanks callmelilyb! I'm actually completely floored and don't know quite how to respond to all the really enthusiastic and wonderful faculty members who are reaching out to me from each school. I am not going to be able to visit all of them, and am slightly worried about how they will feel if I end up rejecting the offer without meeting them in person. My academic history is rather odd and twisted, as are my interdisciplinary research interests. I think the protean character of my interests worked in my favor somewhat, since different departments picked up different aspects of my statement of purpose. I suspect that this allowed me to evade the problem of "departmental math" somewhat. I would be happy to share my writing with you ... PM me and we can talk more
  4. I spoke too soon - I just received an offer of admission from Cornell by email (from Michele Mannella, their Graduate Programs Coordinator). Good luck to everyone still waiting on Cornell! I wondered for a while today if the snowstorm hitting Philadelphia would delay Penn's decisions, but as of now the campus is still open, so I think it's reasonable to expect to hear by the end of the week.
  5. I'd already written Cornell off but I just got an email from their Graduate Programs Coordinator notifying me of admission, with an invitation to visit at a time of my choice at their expense. I'm not sure why there was such a long delay between the first two acceptances and this next round, but good luck to everyone still waiting!
  6. I didn't, at least not officially! I saw acceptances and rejections appearing on the results page and so assumed that I'd been rejected. Sorry to alarm you!
  7. I'm flying out of Philadelphia. Not as worried about landing in Raleigh-Durham as I am about being able to take off at all from Philadelphia. I just called US Airways though, and the operator told me that Philadelphia is not on their list of cities in the weather bulletin that's been put out. This doesn't mean there won't be delays (it's _raining_ right now and already there are delays) but it might help to call your airline and check ... I think I might also call their travel agent tomorrow morning to ask for advice
  8. Penn's committee is meeting this Thursday to make decisions. Good luck to everyone!
  9. Does anyone here have plans to fly out from the East Coast this Thursday to Duke for the admit weekend? There are forecasts of hurricane-conditions and snow over much of the East Coast from Wednesday night to Friday morning, and I have no clue what to do about travel arrangements. Ideas?
  10. Thanks for the congrats!! The call came from Prof. John Bender just before 5PM EST, which was a surprise since I wasn't expecting schools to notify on a Saturday. Quite frankly I was so excited I didn't even catch everything he was saying as he detailed the terms of the offer. From what I do remember - 6 years of guaranteed funding with 4 guaranteed summers, and admitted students are invited to the department open house from the 31st of March to the 3rd of April.
  11. I don't know about the 38 number, but I will vouch for the fact that good news is coming from the Vice Chair of Graduate Studies via e-mail (mine came in at 14:56 EST), not the website. The website still tells me that a decision has not been reached!
  12. The entry says "Literature" - I wonder if it's an acceptance for English or Complit? *My bad - I just saw the full entry for English Language and Literature. Congrats to the admits!
  13. smilingface- I've sent you an IM in reply

  14. I was one of the lucky people who received a Duke admission today as well (hello to MJP and ratiocinator). I was particularly grateful for the second email from Prof. Rob Mitchell, who took the time to provide a very thoughtful and considered response to my writing sample and personal statement. I'm somewhat hesitant about living in Durham, since I'm an international student and have never been anywhere near Durham, but I'm looking forward to visiting at the end of February! I suppose I count as a Postcolonialist, with interests in deconstruction and (the rhetorics of) developmental economics. I'm finishing up a BA and BSc. Econ at Penn - 3.98CGPA, 4.00 in the Major. 800V 800Q 5.5AW and 680 on the subject test. If I remember correctly, Duke's program didn't require the subject test. I wish good luck and good news to everyone for the coming fortnight!
  15. the scores are available by phone - i just called 5 minutes ago. good luck to everyone!!
