  1. Me too! Heading out for History...hi!
  2. utsusemi, I've said yes at UCLA, too. Did we run into one another during our respective campus visits? Either way, see you in the fall!
  3. Just to reiterate what I just posted on the results board: I heard from the prof I was in contact with at Harvard today that they've made their EALC decisions, 13 admits out of 130 applications, with 4 wait-listed. Congrats to any admit who might be reading this! I was one of the wait-listed. I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I also happen to have very lovely grandparents in their 90s who live in Massachusetts and would very much like for their only grandkid to come on back home, so, if you're feeling inclined to go somewhere else... just kidding.
  4. Just FYI to everyone, I'm the East Asianist who was also contacted re: the fellowship application. And, I've since heard back from both my POC and the department about my acceptance, with an official letter via the application website...but perhaps utsusemi is correct in guessing that other fields aren't moving as quickly with their responses? The information I've been receiving has a visitation day set in mid-March, so I would assume there's still some leeway for those who haven't heard. Good luck to everyone!
  5. alexicon, i'm a bit belated here, but sorry to hear you didn't get in. if you're still waiting on any current apps, i hope you have better luck. while folks are on the subject of stats, by the way, i'm going to add my voice to the chorus of those saying master's degree is key. my stats are similar to nurye27's (a little lower in the GRE), and like him, i had a pre-MA application round that didn't go too well. i applied to a mix of PhD and MA programs coming out of undergrad 5 years ago, and only the two MA programs in the bunch accepted me - PhDs were flat denials all around, not even wait list. this time, with the same stats plus the MA and some research experience, i've had two admits, UCLA History among them. given my experience the last time, i was not too optimistic going into this round of applications, but i suspect that having proof of my ability to do graduate level work made all the difference. anyway, best of luck once again on current or future applications!
  6. I'm one of the people was accepted to Chicago, and I got that generic letter, too...which is why when I opened my mail yesterday I initially thought it was ANOTHER generic email, sent to help me agonize more. I was surprised they sent it so soon after the first generic one, too. Anyway, hopefully they won't keep people waiting much longer with the rest of the decisions.
  7. East Asian, modern Japan in particular. It's my first admit and one I very much wanted (so just to avoid sounding to conflicted, this is my real feeling about the letter: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), but the horror stories of competition here are worrying me a bit. I have a great impression of Chicago for Japan studies in particular from my undergrad adviser, who did her Phd with someone who's still there, but of course one professor or two professors don't make a department. Wish I could get to the visiting day, but there's no way I can afford to travel from Japan. Hmm.
  8. I'm applying to UCLA, but in History with an East Asian focus. I've applied to other universities in Asian Studies, so I'm monitoring both boards, and wondering whether my application is getting passed around at all. Any news from EAS yet? I'm still worried about whether I should have applied for History or EAS...if EAS lets out their results sooner, I'll have my answer!
  9. I'm the other person who heard from UCLA, and I'm also in East Asian. I'm also currently in East Asia, which account for the delayed reply. My guess about the FLAS was the same - giving a week or so to get it in. Of course, the deadline just HAS to be the day after my birthday...guess that party will have to be postponed!
  10. I've been dealing with this all weekend, since I've been referring to SoPs from submitted applications when revising the ones I'm still working on. I've been having moments of "Wait, ugh, that sound awkward..." over and over again. That being said, I learned not to freak out about this about a month ago when a professor I'd been communicating with asked me to send a draft of my SoP and writing sample...I sent them, and he replied with the oh-so-gentle advice that I should fix that part when I mention how much I'd like to work with a professor who hasn't taught at that university since the seventies. The rest of his reply was encouraging, though, so I think everyone's advice here is solid: a mistake is a mistake, and it's probably not a big deal. Good luck
