Interning is always good!
-
I feel like I'm just ripping open a still-festering wound by saying this...
I just called Monica Nees at Indiana (she seems youthfully nice and bureaucratically open) with a real-life phone and she said that the applications committee stands by the April 15th deadline, and that while first decisions have been made, there are still more to make.
I don't even know what to feel anymore.
I'm SOOO glad to know that awesome people are out there keeping the dream alive! Keep writing, peeps, and my sincere congratulations to those that found a program this go-around!
I have a friend who was in a somewhat similar situation kind of a limbo/wait-list/purgatory thing a while back. A month before classes started she was offered acceptance w/o funding. She didn't want to go w/o funding but took a risk anyway and long story short, she ended up with funding a week before classes started. Keep the hope alive y'all. You never know what will happen if you are in the limbo area. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. Start looking at internship ops places!!! Internships are fun (at least I like 'em a lot).

Indiana University MFA - Creative Writing, MFA (F14) Rejected via E-mail on 19 Mar 2014 A 19 Mar 2014
- All people who got accepted/waitlisted have been notified, apparently.
guess we're just waiting with bated breath for the blade of the guillotine to clap, Surprise!
I'm taking it as official that I will be the writer-in-residence of my humble abode for another year at least.
BOO! That is awful. Are you looking into any internship ops or anything for the coming year? If you apply to wherever I end up this year for next year I will vouch for you!!!

I'll be around for awhile on here too, I rather like the folks I have met and love keeping in touch with people.

So is anyone participating in this thread or reading it accepted to Cincinnati for the MA program in poetry that is planning on turning it down or still considering other programs? I am not attempting to convince anyone to turn down the acceptance, just trying to put the likelihood of a ridiculous dream becoming a reality!
I just talked to Cincinnati and I am #1 on the wait-list and Cincinnati is my top choice and I would like to lock that down so I could turn down my other offers and open up spots for others in other programs if at all possible.
Thanks guys!

Jeebuz, Indiana, what's the hold up? I'm still waiting! Though, I'm mostly resigned to just moving on. Official word would be nice.
YIKES!? Still no word? That's ridiculous!
-
MMT, are you the person who posted on the results search about the UC MA? I'm still waiting to hear from them. Just curious!
Yes.
-
What's the heezy on UNLV? Anybody heard anything? (fiction, btw)
Hopefully you will hear something this week? It is starting to get late for any and all schools. WHY MUST THEY TORTURE US!?
-
Beware the ides of March tomorrow, y'all!

I got into Columbia for fiction!!! Deciding between that and NYU poetry.
Does anyone know if they have contacted all of Columbia's poetry acceptances? My roommate applied and hasn't heard anything from there or Hunter.
congrats!

It may be a waste of time to dwell on it now, but is anyone willing to share a poem from their manuscript? Here's one that I included:
Spring
Mounds of moss' mouths
are right now opening at once
mosses of mound's mouths
are chewing the petals
doing the work of the mortar and pestle
filling with powders of petals.
Mouths expanding to mountain size
the skies are shaped by the fragments of pollen
escaping from the corners of sly smiles expanding
like mountains. The children tilt their faces
toward the lilac saturation
stretch their tongues wide
catch the incantations.
If I am not incorrect doesn't posting something like this on here make it unpublishable? Or has it already been published? Regardless if you haven't sent this to Bitter Oleander that might be a good journal to try to submit to. Thanks for sharing! I would share one, but I am wary that it would result in my poem being unpublishable (like I said I am not 100% certain about these rules). However, here is a link to my first publication from a couple years back http://issuu.com/barelysouth/docs/barely_south_review_-_april_2012 and a newer one http://www.rappahannockreview.com/issue-1-2/homemade/
Rappahannock is a great new journal (Check all they have in both issues out and submit there too!).

Ugh, I'm dying. I'm down to four programs (one low-res and one with rolling admissions) and it's been silent. And now MFA Draft is telling me that UF is contacting people "now"?! I think I'm a nervous wreck...
HANG IN THERE! You never know what may happen! I am pullin' for ya.
-
Keep at it you guys, when I didn't go anywhere last year I was super bummed, but it gives you time to intern for a journal (there are tons of websites that list great internships w/ journals and other places), tutor, do workshops, all those things that will make your app impossible to deny the next go around.

Hey! Congratulations!!! Is that your first acceptance? Awesome. I seriously dread hearing back from Indiana and Columbia now, but OH how I crave it!
Thanks so much! Yes it is my first official acceptance (this year) I got into Emerson last year but decided not to go because their lack of funding and just decided the program wasn't what I wanted.
I talked to the editor-in-chief of the journal I work at today and he went to Indiana way back when and knows some people there now and had recently talked to them. He talked like they should be making calls/emails by the end of this week/beginning of next. I hope you hear good news soon! I have my fingers crossed for you and send good vibes your way. Keep telling yourself "No news is good news."

I'll take your congrats even if it ultimately is in vain... but I hope not. Got rejected by Brown while I was typing that last post; that makes 8/11 -- OH BOY. Also, this morning I got a phone call and it was from the Oregon area code, and I thought, "Golly, this is it...", but no, it was just a solicitor. That really messed with my head.
So yeah, Indiana never responded and I'm feeling super antsy too.
I will savor the glimmer of hope gleaned from Bama.
I have had similar things happen (with solicitors)...It about gives a person a heart attack! Congrats on the "review" from Bama! I hope it means all good things, Bama has a wicked program.
And let another week of waiting commence...

The first time I took the test I didn't study much at all and got average scores, the second time around I studied a little. Since I was applying to MFA programs I didn't focus on studying for math at all really. I looked over a bit of material for maybe 1 to 1 1/2 hours max a couple days before the test. Other than that I downloaded a couple of vocab aps for my iPad and half ass studied on those. Honestly though, for me the full experience of taking the test is more helpful than any amount of studying. I did a lot better but I do not think it was because I studied. The content on the test (as people have already stated) is not that difficult, it is about being able to maintain a steady pace and focused on the test.
I think it really comes down to knowing what works best for you. That is not much of an answer, but its the truth. GOOD LUCK!

Here's to a weekend in which we will all probably hear absolutely nothing (unless snail mail delivers news)!
This may help pass some time though:

Speaking of PhD's, did you guys check out Denver's for Poetry? They only take those who haven't yet got a MFA. I know someone who got their MFA at UMass then PhD in Buffalo, NY....
I was thinking francophone and anglophone African countries and India for the faraway bits...I've worked for the government's State dpt. for African embassies and speak Urdu, so that's where I'd be able to communicate. I feel like there's not enough poetry in the world!!
There is definitely a lack of poetry!!!
And I did briefly look into Denver's PhD for poetry, but I was attempting to apply to places that would not be near any of my immediate family members and my sister and her family live about 2 hours outside of Denver. Denver is beautiful (I lived there until I was 8), perhaps later in life I can return? I do think it is awesome they go for non MFA-ers.
I am keeping my fingers crossed to get into Cincinnati's BA-PhD program (Utah is a good program too, but I like Cin's way more). I just wish MFA's did not have such a stigma when it comes to going on to a PhD program. I got my BA in History and Sociology so it virtually impossible for me to go get an MA for easier admission into a PhD program. I just don't understand the stigma.

All for CNF. No word yet. This is going to be a long month.
Have you heard from GMU yet? I have a friend that applied for the CNF program and she had an interview for a TA spot a few weeks ago. I am unsure if you applied for a TA spot or not and if any of this is relevant to you, but you might find this info helpful???? Good luck either way, you applied to great programs!

Hey y'all! I have just been accepted w/ funding to George Mason's MFA program. I was just wondering if there was anyone else out there in the same boat and if anyone has updated info on the best places to live??
