  1. I don't know if I'm being too reactive, but my top choice was where I attended for my MSW...I know it's a good programme but I'm so bloody irked right now that I'm starting to more seriously consider my second choice. Besides, I'm neither hip nor cool nor young enough to live in Chapel Hill :)

  2. So, I'm applying for a Ph.D. in social work. I've been accepted at Pitt whereas UNC Chapel Hill says they likely won't tell me anything till the end of March. Ugh, they had the earliest application deadline but they're the last of all the schools to notify! Anyway, so I have a really good offer at Pitt that I would only turn down if UNC accepts me and makes a similar offer. The problem is, despite the customary 15 April notify-by date, there is an accepted students weekend for this program at Pitt in the first week of April. They pay for accommodation and a flight there. So, I don't want to wait until the last minute to book a plane ticket because they will balk at reimbursing the cost, but I also don't want to have to try sorting out a fully refundable (and likely more expensive) ticket either. I'm wondering if it is bad form to just straight up tell Pitt that this is the situation?

  3. I had this come up for a summer session that I took which the school agreed to award credit. I contacted the institution at which I studied and they did have some info, though not an official transcript, available. If it's available, you might be shelling out a ton for it, but if it isn't, then you forward the email where they say so to admissions. That's how two grad schools agreed with me to handle it.

  4. I bought a book and read a few words and one essay. The only thing that was helpful that I didn't know was a suggestion to use real life statistics in a persuasive argument. It was an essay about education and I mentioned that the world literacy rate of 1970 vs today. Apparently that's helpful. Of course you don't want to make stuff up, but you might get a chance to use some trivia!

    My scores were 150 Q/162 V/5.5 written.

  5. In North Carolina, a minimum of 82% of admitted undergrads must be in state. There's no similar requirements for grad students. I took a graduate history course at a well recognised neighbouring institution and was the only person from NC. It did make me a little bitter, but I guess it reflects the renowned quality of the school.

  6. I wish I knew about UNC's PhD acceptance rate...I felt it might make me look sketchy if I asked them befor applying. They had the first deadline of the five schools to which I applied and they'll be the last to notify...not till the end of March. Anyone else feeling the pain of waiting?!

  7. Anything publishedd regardless of when would help...I'm guessing a bit here. When it comes to publication, all PhD programmes are interested in them. I was really scared I would not get in without one, but amazingly I did. I'm guessing you would be interested in U Mich? They're the most prestigious and selective if the PhD programmes, admission rate of 20%. In the end, it's a combination of writing and experience. I think my international work helped tremendously, so if you're able to do peace corps or the like, it probably helps a lot.

I'm interested in eventually going on to get my PhD. Would anyone mind sharing their GRE scores, and maybe something's that made. your application stand out?

I have a slightly unusual academic and professional history. I have three bachelors degrees (BA history, BA women's studies, and of course BSW) as well as an MSW. I worked in child protection in my home state for almost four years and then spent four years working in public child protection in England. GRE: V162, M150, Writing 5.5. Thus far this has led to acceptances at University of Utah and University of Pittsburgh. I'm keenly, perhaps desperately, waiting to hear from UNC Chapel Hill and with a bit less anxiety waiting on U South Carolina and U Tennessee. UNC won't be telling us anything before the end of the month. It seems like funding can vary significantly between programs.

  9. This afternoon I got a phone call from the area code of my top choice school, start shaking when I answer..."The FBI has reported a rash of break ins in your area..." Goddamn auto dialer. Also I have becomes conditioned to panic whenever my email beeps.
