  1. Thank you Orange and WildViolet It's been nice to hear about these experiences and suggestions of yours!
  2. Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I'll certainly put the time saved into my coursework so that I can be more prepared for future researches!
  3. lol thank you for the advice spellbanisher. Sounds worthy indeed
  4. Cong on your 2 fellowhips! Yep I'm pretty certain I'm getting a fellowship 'cause someone else turned down the offer. I think it's a great sign, too. Just a bit curious about the difference in duty between a fellow and an assistant, hmmm...
  5. Well they've certainly successfully bribe me!
  6. Hi everyone, I've just received a very kind offer from my future grad school in US to change my TA to fellowship, which guarantees more stipend and requires no service duties for my first year. I really appreciate the offer and am sure to accept it. However I can't help but to wonder why the school should think I deserve that money. I will feel perfectly comfortable receiving a stipend if I am a TA/RA, after all I am getting paid for my services, but to receive a stipend by just taking courses? This really makes me think the university is being a little too kind to me lol. Maybe for public schools, those fundings are provided by the government. My home country (I come from outside US) also spends huge money on her graduate stutents. But then I am an international student so I guess the fellows is not a welfare particularly for US citizens. So does anyone know why schools/governments provide such a type of financial aids to students? What will they expect from a pre-doc fellow during his/her graduate studies?
  7. Accepted an offer from UF yesterday night. I hope Gainesville isn't too big because I don't know how to drive a car :=d
  8. Thanks for the piece of infomation. So that's a reason why they look smaller than other stat departments... I haven't finalized my decision yet but I think I'm going to Florida in fall. Don't know if it's right. Hope I can do well and become a professor someday, haha...
  9. Hi there, I posted this thread on the Decisions, Decisions forum and was adviced to come here. So I've been accepted by PhD programs in statistics at florida, missouri and virginia tech. Now I don't really know how to choose. UFL have a good reputation, but their department seems really small, and it seems they have been losing a number of important faculty members in the past few years. I think Missouri have some strong professors. I don't understand why their rank is much lower than UFL. I am too new to statistics, rankings trouble me a lot. I didn't dig deep into Virginia Tech( partly because I haven't received any financial aid from them) but I like their website ... I hope to get a academic position in the future, but I am really new to the field( I studied physics as an undergraduate). I haven't made up my mind as to what area of statistics I want to research in... all those areas seem equally interested to me! OK maybe time series or Bayesian analysis might be two good choices. So does anyone know about the statistics departments( or their PhD programs) in these three schools? Any information will be helpful. Opinions on their academic level are especially appreciated! Thank you and good luck to everyone~
  10. Thanks for the advice! I'll try asking there. As to what kind of research I am interested in, I really haven't decided yet( shame on me). I think time series or Bayesian analysis might be two good choices.
