  1. M.Ed. / M.A. in Secondary Ed Stats: 159V/167Q/6.0W Background: Physics (B.S.) Applied: Boston College, Columbia TC, George Washington University, NYU, and a few others Admitted: All except NYU - never heard from them, figured it was a bad sign about the program Rejected: None Going: George Washington University
  2. I haven't decided yet. Besides the finances and which program I think is right for me, i also have a S.O. in the equation, meaning we are trying to coordinate our picks (if possible). It's been difficult to figure out which program is best suited for me. Congrats on you being accepted as well, and a congrats on the other acceptances I see you've received.
  3. How were you notified? I applied to the same program, except in Physics. I've basically given up on them since I've heard from all other schools and need to make a decision. They were definitely high up on my list, and I really cannot fathom why they think it acceptable to take until almost April. Also, congratulations on the acceptance!
  4. Can you link the reddit discussion here or pm it to me please?
  5. I'm trying to pick between TC and another program - I was wondering if there are any current students or alums from TC who could help me over PMs? Maybe wjdavis and OCD or Perfection - would you all be willing to please help?
  6. @Dain - As wjdavis said, the packages started coming out yesterday. My friend who was also accepted to a program at TC received an email with the package (I think). I have not received anything as of yet, so I cannot tell you where to find it (sorry ). My fingers are crossed. Why is it you are at TC wjdavis?
  7. I'm honestly not sure where I want to be in 10-20 years. I've participated in some research and conducted my own research as part of my studies, and I really enjoyed those experiences. I also enjoyed teaching that I've done in one form or another over the past few years (not in a formal classroom - tutoring and similar things), and I think that I likely would enjoy both conducting research and teaching during my professional career. So, where does that leave me? I think I'd rather have 20,000$ @ ~5.41% interest (higher or lower depending on which loans I obtain) paid off over about 10 years = 26,000$ less in my lifetime and keep more doors open than not. This of course neglects what I have from undergrad. I do see your point - pay the minimum necessary to be certified and teach. No biggie. For me personally, another issue I have is whether I want to be in my state and attend the university where I would be eligible for in-state tuition. I am not from New York, but I do want to live there, complicating that aspect form. It seems like you are currently at student at TC wjdavis - is this correct? If so, any recommendations for what you would have done before attending (such as applying for certain scholarships, jobs, etc)?
  8. As far as I can tell, this seems to be a high amount from TC. WordlTraveler mentioned receiving 8k, so you've received more than that, but I am just basing judgement on what I've read on here and a few other sites. Depending on your program, I have also read that you can earn credit and/or money through working for your department (as a research and/or teaching assistant). There seem to be many on this thread of the opinion that TC provides much less funding to people than other schools, so I am curious - what are other schools offering? I've received offers from other programs, but the percentage of tuition cost covered has been about the same for all of them. While some of the programs cost less overall (such as my in-state program), I wonder if TC is worth the extra financial burden of 10-20,000$? People I have talked to at my current institution have said that the cost is worth it in terms of doors opened (while I want to teach for a while, I do hope to eventually become a principal as well as obtain a PhD or Ed.D, so that's important for me). I'm not sure what sort of responses I will receive since this thread seems populated with bashers, so to speak, of TC...
  9. Oddly, I never received an update by email that I should check my application status. I saw on the results search that others had heard news, so I checked, and ta-da! it was there. I'm kinda concerned I never heard anything by email, but oh well
  10. I won't list schools I've applied to to prevent (perhaps unfair) comparisons, but I haven't had any special experiences during application processes to other schools besides Teachers College. Most so far have told me financial aid, as advisors of the program, isn't their responsibility; I'd need to contact the financial aid office for aid. That attitude was common and off-putting, so if all the programs cost generally the same (besides in-state schools), then I'd prefer to take out loans for Columbia. If I decide five or ten years later after teaching that I want to obtain a PhD in education or something else, I think Columbia would help with such ventures. While the difference between a 5k$ vs. 50k$ tuition is substantial, I feel like Teachers College is worth it. Perhaps I'm misinformed, but that's the impression I have. On that note, I was happily accepted to Columbia today Where can I ask about housing and student life? Need to figure out where I'm going to live and how much it'll cost asap.
  11. Still waiting on one from TC and a few other schools. It's really difficult for me that some schools informed me of decisions 2-3 weeks ago and were quite proactive about it while other schools, like TC, are so much later. What's the deal? More applicants to pick from? More complicated process? They know we want to attend, so they take their time?
  12. Sorry for the ambiguity, we're looking for recommendations on housing areas. We already picked out a hotel - we're only staying for a day, though. Limited time. She has free tuition and a 10,000$ stipend. I doubt i'll get anything really. I'll likely work while going to school, probably not making much unless I get lucky with a good find. Parents may support us some. She's in Georgetown, I'm waiting to hear from George Washington and have another school nearby.
  13. I'm in the same boat - I am graduating with a B.S. in a hard science and would love to teach. I've applied to some Master of Education programs, and have been accepted to some and still waiting on others. I'm just crossing my fingers. Considering Teach for America thinks students like you (at least sound like you in terms of excellent academics) can teach with 8 weeks (i think it's 8?) of programming on how to educate, I'd think you'll be fine. I mean, you're going to Harvard - clearly you're not a lame duck. Nothing can take the place of hard work and persistence.
  14. Hi all my fiancee and I were just accepted to schools in D.C. and are looking for places to stay (visiting this week, probably still searching beyond that). Any recommendations? Safety is a priority (as I think it would be with most people). We have a car, but are happy to take the metro (and would probably prefer to). Any tips would be wonderful. Thanks!
