  1. My practicum supervisor is moody, awkward and regularly sends me cryptic and exasperating emails. I'm in psych and I can't figure this guy out!
  2. I know I saw this a while ago but didn't write it down. Can someone give me the names of the private companies that do training for grad students or researchers in MRI and CT imaging? I have tried googling it but can only find university programs and as my university doesn't offer this training I'm looking at other sources
  3. Okay, thanks. I will look into it further and maybe get my prof to take a look. You're right - probably just spam
  4. It was the Journal of Psychological Sciences. Do you think it's legitimate? It is peer-reviewed and seems like a legit email but I don't know...
  5. Hello, I could use some advice. I am clinical PsyD student without much experience in the research world (no publications). I attended 2 psych conferences this year and have been pondering what journal to send my MA research study to. A couple days ago I received an invitation from the editorial board of a journal that had seen my talk at a conference, and the have invited me to submit. I looked up rankings and they are a top 10 psych journal. My questions are: 1) Is this common and does it mean that I have a better chance of being accepted? 2) I have a lot going on right now that requires a great deal of time. Should this be a top priority? 3) If I decided to submit, how soon would they reasonably expect to see my manuscript and should I email ahead of time with a response to their invitation? I would appreciate any/all advice that you have to offer as I'm totally out of my element on this one!
  6. Hello, Just looking for some assistance from the pros out there as I'm in uncharted waters right now. I'm presenting my dissertation proposal in 2 weeks and after that I'm going to need to contact some creators of an assessment tool and ask for their permission to use it in my study. My questions are: what is the etiquette for this process? They are overseas so should I attach a letter in email? How much information do they want? Do they want proof of my IRB approval? I'd welcome any thoughts or any previous experiences you've had!
  7. Oops I meant to quote that. In any event the above advice is spot on I think. I also worked backwards by registering for a testing date then setting a study schedule. I also did a pre-test and then weekly timed tests. I knew exactly how well I was going to do going in. I could have chose to study more at that point but I was satisfied with my scores from practice tests. I ended up scorning 5points higher than both my quant and verbal practice tests. So the practice tests were a good gauge for me. Good Luck!
  8. My main advice is to sign up for a test date first and work backwards. Having a test date will make it real. And then make a schedule for what you need to study/accomplish per day and stick to it. Lastly, take timed practice tests. They help!
  9. The acceptance rate to medical school is 40% for people with social science backgrounds. Your odds are actually a lot better than a clinical psych program with 2% acceptance. For what it's worth I read this very same thing. I did an informational interview with a neuropsychologist this year and the first thing she asked me was, "is it too late for you to apply to med school?" Ugh yea. Unfortunately I was entering year 8/11 at this point. It was waay too late otherwise maybe I would have made a different choice....
  10. Just wondering if anyone else is making their way to Amsterdam for this conference in March? If so, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in sharing accommodation during this conference?
  11. Sounds like you had the perfect experience from start to finish - that's awesome and so rare! Best of luck!!
  12. I'm working towards matching for an internship in the next cycle (applying next year for Sept 2015) but I feel like I am already stressing about my number of hours, courses, experiences etc!!! Would anyone be willing to share with me their stats for matching on things like Intervention Hours, Assessment Hours, Publications, Conference Presentations, etc so that I can get a sense if I will be anywhere close to competitive. Trust me, I've read everything about how it's an algorithm that decides, but I just want a sense of what people are applying with. Anyone willing to share with me? Thank-you!!! This is the most stressful part of the whole process for me I think!!!!
  13. Mielle0930 I felt compelled to post as I was in this exact position only a year ago. I'd decided I wanted to go back and pursue my MA after almost 10 years of being out of school. After I finished a terminal MA program, I knew that I needed to follow my dream of becoming a psychologist. So I visited the school of my choice (in Canada) and asked for the realistic, non-sugared version of my chances on getting in. I had no research experience to speak of but relevant clinical experience in the "real world." I was told that even if I volunteered in the lab for 2 years, I still would not be "on par" with their applying students. I was also told that since over 200 people apply and 2 are accepted each year, perhaps a PsyD would better meet my skills and experience (although I was disappointed, I appreciated the honesty and really didn't want to waste valuable time). I considered that advice carefully and weighed my option of volunteering for 2 years, and continuing to apply each year (for probably the next 10 years) or get on with my life, accept the debt of a non-funded program and get going with it. (3 more years of debt, versus Ma or PsyD salary once done.....the ROI made sense to me) I applied and got accepted to a relatively new PsyD program at Alaska Pacific University. I love that I can focus on my area of interest and I'm still meeting my own goals on the side - being accepted for conference presentations and working on publishing. Although it is not research based and they cannot provide much in the way of support with my research projects, I am excelling in the program due to my clinical experience and am pretty confident in my ability to direct my career the way I want. I think that if you are self-motivated and driven, you can make anything happen (perhaps I'm just optimistic though). Good luck with your decision and I'd be happy to talk through pm if you want to explore it further!
  14. Hi Everyone, I have just had my first submission accepted for a poster presentation at an international conference for psychology. I have applied with the conference for a travel grant and I am applying through my school as well but, I'm wondering if anyone has any other sources I could check out for travel grants? Even if I do receive a grant from the conference, I will still be a long way off from covering my expenses. I would appreciate any tips anyone has on this!!!
  15. Thanks everyone for your suggestions - who knew a poster could cause so much stress??!!
