  1. Hey guys, any and all advice is appreciated :) I graduated Almost 2 years ago with my undergrad in communication disorders. In the 7 pre-req's my alma-mater looks at, I had an extremely low GPA of a 3.0. I applied to some out of state schools just to test it out and I obviously didn't get in.For the past 2 years since I've graduated, I've been gaining lots if experience and I'm on my 3rd and last class of retaking. With retaking I've raised my GPA to a 3.3 and I'm shooting for at least a 3.4 at the end of this semester with the anatomy I'm currently retaking. I have experience volunteering at a special needs preschool, working as a speech therapy technician, trained in ABA therapy, and currently am teaching English to non-English speaking preschool students. My GRE scores aren't that great, I received a 4.0 in the writing portion and didn't do so well in the quantative and verbal portion. I also began my backup plan this semester in a masters program for special education and have been receiving As on everything so far. I know this was super long, but do any of you feel I still have a chance?

When I graduated in 2012 I applied to three programs. Silly of me, but I had no idea what I was doing and I did not have any type of mentor or family toask advice from. Anyhow, I did not get into any of the three programs. I cried, of course, was devastated and so discouraged. I decided I would start pursuing a Masters in Spanish and reapply for SLP when I finished. Here we are two years later, I graduate next month and I am currently considering offers from 4 different SLP programs.

What changed about my application?   My SHS/CD grades are exactly the same, my GRE scores barely improved the second time, and I asked for the same professors to write my letters of rec.

The only thing I can imagine is that, at this point, I have proven my ability to be successful in a graduate program (I have a straight-A record in my MA prgm) and in my letter of intent, I explained that my only motivations for pursing my current degree (In Spanish Linguistics) were directly related to my goal to become an SLP, that I knew it would make me more a more effective, knowledgable SLP.

So all that to get to my point, OF COURSE THERE IS A POINT TO REAPPLYING!! Every year the applicant pool changes and your GRE scores and GPA hold a different value. In addition, you are planning to pursue a Masters in Special Ed. I think that is great plan and will strengthen your application tremendously. Also, apply all across the country. Do not focus on a specific region––I notice that the same groups of students tend to apply to same schools, so you are essentially competing against the same people over and over.

  2. I was told by my professors that an SLPA position would be my best bet to gain hands on experiance within the field. Asha and state boards in the state of New Mexico have very strict laws about slpa's I have to take graduate coursework and be supervised by a liscensed slp at least 20% of the time. Penalty for practicing above my certification is a felony. I think it has been an amazing experiance and i definitly feel more prepared for graduate school and the clincial experiance.

Hey there! Im in NM too. If i ever get accepted off of the UNM waitlist I will be pursuing the SLPA license in NM as well. I saw that Rio Rancho public schools is hiring SLPAs. Was the application process for the license painful?

  3. Hello! I am quite untraditional as an SLP student. I am 26 and I have a 7 year old daughter. I will complete my first Masters this June and have held two assistantships totaling 30 hours/week for the entire program. Life is insane at times. It requires commitment and discipline on many levels. I am stretched thin but still manage to find time to volunteer at her school once a week, take her to her extracurriculars, etc. My life consists of reading, eating, sleeping, reading, cleaning, working, driving around, and more reading. At times my daughter gets to hear my assigned readings as a bedtime story. Thankfully she understands. Anyhow, I have found that 2 years in a Masters program fly by and the investment is well worth the sacrifices.

  4. There was no mention of funding in the email I received. I'm wondering if they're going to send us a follow-up email or a packet with more information, including funding for those who receive it. It states that people received funding last year on ASHA's website, so I'm pretty sure they will this year. I'm interested in the program as well, but the price makes it a tough decision!

Congrats!!  I also looked up the stats on ASHAs website and I noticed that a significant number of students were offered funding last year. I email them to ask about the timeline for offers and I will post their answer in this thread when they reply.

  5. Does anyone know if PSU offers any funding to their graduate students?  I got accepted, but I am out-of-state, so I'm afraid the only way I'd be able to afford it is if I get some amount of funding.  Which is depressing because I'd love to go to PSU.

Sometimes they do, but afaik it's very limited. You might try emailing to ask when funding decisions are going to go out.

I had the same question. I was under the impression that most schools offer the funding in the acceptance letter?  I have been accepted to some amazing programs and fear that without funding I will end up at my in-state school. Not terrible, but so bittersweet.

  6. Just checked the University of Northern Colorado portal today, it says "conditional acceptance!" Did anyone else get this? I'm guessing it means I need to take some leveling classes. Anyway, yay!

Does anyone have any ideas about how to get in touch with current grad students from different schools?

Admitted: University of Northern Colorado, Eastern New Mexico University, University of South Carolina

    Rejected: Eastern Carolina University

Applied: San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, California State University East Bay, Idaho State University

Congrats!  Did you apply to the residential or online program??  I haven't heard a thing from online admissions and I was wait listed for the residential program weeks ago.

Also the best way to get in touch with students is to simply email a professor in the department and ask them to send out an email to their students. I get these all of the time from my own professors and often contact potential grad students at their request.

  7. Thank you everyone!!

@e_lena, Yes, I grew up in So Cal and Redlands is about an hour away from me which means I would still have to move. I have visited Redlands a few times and it is a nice little city. I have heard that the cost of living around Redlands is cheaper than the more concentrated areas of LA, which is definitely comforting to know!! Are you going to accept your offer at Redlands??

I would absolutely love to say that I will be accepting, but the tuition is very high and unless I am able to get an assistantship with tuition remission… I can't imagine taking out $50k+ in loans.

  8. Just received an acceptance email from Redlands!!! I am so excited!!! That also means that I'll be rejecting the offer from Northern Arizona. Good luck to all!

Congrats!!  I just got my acceptance e-mail as well. I am excited but now I have a million questions about funding. Are you from S. CA? I lived in San Jose for 9 years but have little familiarity with Redlands and the job/living situation there. Anyhow, I am thrilled. Congrats again!

  9. Officially accepted for fall 2014! After being rejected from Boulder this was such a relief, I want to relocate back to Colorado from Illinois SO badly! Curious as to who else has been accepted here this year!!  Where are you from? What are your slp interests/goals? :) SO EXCITING!

Congratulations! I was selected as an alternate for the residential program. I also applied to the online program as well but have yet to hear back.

  10. I just got my acceptance for UNM. Anxiously awaiting funding info from IU.

Are they only sending them through the mail or are they emailing the offers as well? I saw on the results page someone posted that they will be sent out through mail and email. Anxiously awaiting as well!

When I called she said the physical letter would be the only form of notification. I am rather anxious as well, an offer of funding would make the decision process much easier. Otherwise I'm more inclined to go to Portland State. SLPbilingue, piensas aceptar en UNM?

  11. Has anyone heard from IU about funding? The clarification e-mail they sent said they would send out offers by March 14th. Just wondering if anyone had heard from them yet.

I called today and they stated that the letters were mailed out this morning (monday).  Have you heard back from UNM yet? I was wait-listed. But am glad to have been accepted at IU (STEPS).
