  5. Well it sounds like you're definitely leaning towards UMCP. Maybe if you visited the campuses or talked with students there it would help you to confirm your thoughts. I wouldn't pay much attention to which school is more prestigious overall in this case, because industry and schools will recognize that they're both highly ranked programs.

  11. It's definitely your vs you're for me. Although sometimes when I'm typing on here I find myself making the same mistake
  12. I've always just used Google Docs (at least since it's been around) But I do like the idea of synching automatically with local copies so you always have an offline updated version. So here's my link: http://db.tt/RT8I3HX

    Ann Arbor, MI

Hey, welcome! There's actually a 5 year old ongoing thread on Ann Arbor here: so perhaps you could browse through there and ask questions there, since a lot more people will see it than if you started a new thread.
  14. Thanks a lot for letting us know and for the useful information on your page - it has been linked to on this forum by applicants before. One possible improvement I would suggest is to let the applicants know faster when they have not been successful, or possibly if they are on a waitlist - but I guess that may be in the hands of the graduate school as you say. Thanks again.
  15. Those are both excellent choices - congrats! I'm not exactly in your field, but I would go with the one that I thought was the better 'fit'. At UPenn, your POIs group is smaller so you will get more attention, but at UMCP, a famous professor will be able to give your more contacts which could lead to better job prospects in the long run, so both have advantages and disadvantages. How does each match up with your research interests? Which group do you think would give you a better opportunity to pursue your interests? What if your POI were to leave in the next couple years - are there other profs that you could work with?

  17. No it's not just your department. My department has a similar visitation/recruitment weekend.

  20. That's really tough. I hope that they end up being right and you get into a better program for you.

There's a lot of 'grunt work' involved with research. What will distinguish you is your ability to write about how your data entry or recording fit into the bigger picture of the project. Even if you just did grunt work, describing a clear understanding of the project and how you contributed to it will help your SoP for next year. Perhaps you would even have the opportunity to make suggestions and contribute, in some way, to the direction of the project.

I would say 2 and 3. If you were able to get a research assistantship it would definitely help your app. Perhaps they may not be willing to hire you for a year, but you might be able to get the opportunity to get some experience on a summer project. If you're not able to get a research assistantship, I would suggest you use the upcoming months to read the academic literature in your field and nurture your interests. By doing so, you'll get a more focused idea of what you want to do in grad school and when it comes to writing your SoP for next year, you'll have a lot of material to draw from about what you want to do. As for the schools you apply to, I would suggest that you expand your search for good programs. Still go ahead and apply to your dream schools, but make sure you seek out schools that are strong in your area, but may not be as competitive as 'dream schools'. That way, you're likely to have better options come next year. Best of luck!
  23. Scan them and have them digitized? At least that's what I would do.
