  1. I'm applying to Columbia's school psyc masters program later this year. Does anyone knew what they look for in candidates in terms of work experience? I have a few years experience teaching ESL in public schools and abroad, but no formal work experience in research.
  2. How much will a Masters degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology help in getting into a well-ranked MBA program? I'm sure there are more important factors in an application, but am I wrong in thinking this is a big application enhancer? My research interests are in leadership and employee motivation. I think the knowledge I'll gain will prove valuable in my career. My question, however, is if this is an unnecessary means of getting into a good MBA program. My academic background is in psychology, and my work experience is primarily in education.
  3. I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but it was Picture Day the other day at my elementary school, and the kids loved the photographers stock image of spaghetti. His assistant would hold it up and he would say "Look at the noodle noodle!" If they didn't erupt in laughter, they at least made big grins. You'd question the humor, but then again I thought it was hilarious too. But yeah, stock images.
  4. Looks great! Thanks a bunch. The book look greats, and in fact, simply changing my search to "character education" was also very helpful! Tailoring to the class is most definitely expected. I guess I'm just trying to familiarize myself with what's out there in the school psychology field, what's the standard. I don't have much exposure to the field. Maybe this is more guidance counseling than school psychology anyways.
  5. An educator from Puerto Rico talked to my coworker today about a conference in New York. He said he flew here to go to it. My coworker didn't get his name, nor the name of the conference. Does anyone know what conference this might be? I found too many results to know which is the one. It just sounds so interesting! edit: It's education-related! Forgot to mention that important bit.
  6. Has anyone heard of "character development" courses taught at elementary schools? Does anyone have a recommendation for a good curriculum for such a course? I've found some leads from the University of Illinois, but nothing too informational. The charter school where I'll soon be working wants to start a "character development" class, but they don't seem to have specific plans yet. They said I would be a great fit for teaching it (because of my plans to pursue a degree in school psyc) so I thought I would develop some plans of my own. Any tips?
  7. I'm in the same boat as you ed_psy, even looking at the same schools. I've been working as an elementary ESL specialist for 2 years now, and I decided to pursue school psychology precisely because I love working in a school setting. If you do as well, my vote would be becoming a licensed school psychology. I feel like taking that path still allows you the option of pursuing research in the future (or even the present, if you're the kind who enjoys independent work). Good luck to you! Your research experience sounds incredibly qualified. I have next to nothing for that. I'm sure you can get great LoRs also, given all your experience. You should get some GRE vocab flash cards though

    AWA Prep

What services do people generally use to prep for the AWA portion? I'm looking to write timed essays to a randomly-selected prompt, but most importantly I want to receive feedback (and a score) specific to what I wrote. Does anyone know of services like these? I've found one, but I guess I'm looking for options.
  9. I'm looking at specialist programs primarily (and now St. John's PsyD program! thank you!), since I don't have much research experience. I have lots of experience working in schools, but all I have for research is what I did for classes during undergrad (and some unpublished, independent research I did while in China). I'm not confident enough that I'd get into a good PhD program. Thanks, schoolpsycher for naming those schools! I'm only really considering schools in NY and MA though. So I guess funding comes second after location. I'm looking at Queens College, wsa92, considering applying there.
  10. Congrats to those of you heading to a school psyc program! I myself am looking at schools for the 2015 start. What schools have you all found to offer the best funding to their students? I have my heart set on NYC. Columbia is likely out of the question.
  11. Is there a School Psychology version of this SIOP website? And Saman, you sound like a great candidate for PhD programs. I'm lacking research experience myself, and I feel like that's so important in a candidate. Good luck to you!
  12. Thank you so much for your responses! Very helpful. Kyongboon Kwon's research seems especially interesting. I'm actually starting to think a PhD program might be what I'm looking for, as Iphi kind of suggested. It's just intimidating since most of my experience is in education, and I have no research experience outside of the labs and seminars I took as an undergrad.
  13. Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but I'm doing it. I'm planning on applying to school psychology programs at the end of the year, and I've just started working on my list of schools. I love working in schools, but I miss conducting research, and after talking with our school's school psychologist, I noticed the obvious answer. My academic background is primarily in cross-cultural research. Almost all of my own research (for labs and seminars) had to do with cultural identity, or the roles (specific) cultural values play in clinical settings. The problem is that I want to pursue research in prosocial behavior. While I've found plenty of school psychology professors with research in cultural systems, I haven't found any who study prosocial behavior. It's definitely applicable in a school setting (I'd say), but I haven't found it. Would I be able to conduct this kind of research in a program without professors who specialize in it? Should I admit that these are my research interests? I don't want to go for a degree in Social Psyc because I'm sure I want to be a School Psychologist. What do you do when your research interests conflict with your career plans?
