  1. I've had the same problem, and I have Vista as well. Its rather horrid. Does your campus have a computer lab where you can put it onto an XP running computer? I know for a fact it works on XP - I put it on my mom's when I was home for Thanksgiving. In a week or so I intend to upgrade to 7, and I'm praying that it will work on 7... I would hope that the tests on the power prep software are computer adaptive, so I don't know how helpful it would be to have a pdf of them. That being said, the Math review PDF is available elsewhere on the ETS site, I think on the same page as the power prep software. I guess all I can say is I feel your pain, and I hope to find an answer just as much.
  2. Ah, Thank you! This is kind of what I needed to know - that it is ok to call/ email and ask. I was kind of worried that if I did so, they'd mark something next to my name somewhere, or remember me, and then it would also look bad. I don't know why I thought it but, that's what I thought. thanks! Jen
  3. Hey, I noticed that you are interested in new media and social movements. That is the area I am looking to get into - I am interested in new media and politics. Where all are you applying? What programs do you like most? I'd love to talk to someone else interested in the field. Jen
  4. Most of my apps are due in February. Only two were due now. I do agree that I need to work my ass off on the rest of my app....I'll probably post my SOP when I get a moment. Maybe its for my own piece of mind, but I still wish that I knew the specifics for each school. And whether or not it looks bad to take it a fourth time... Thank you for your replies! Jen
  5. Out of a pool of 5-6 people writing LORs for my 6 schools I am applying to, 2 are graduate students. This is because I know that they can speak to my strengths, and both of them have had me in their classes more than once - which is more than I can say for anyone else. I don't think this should be a problem for you. You will in general need more than one LOR per school, right? So it becomes a mix. I'd recommend calling the schools you are applying to, and seeing what they have to say. Back before I asked anyone to write mine, that is what I did, because I had the same fears you did. I hope this helps!
  6. I attend the University of Maryland right now. You might have to skip buying a house, but in this market you might be fine. As for transportation, as long as you live relatively close to campus, you really really should be fine. DC, and by extension its suburbs which include College Park, has one of the best public transportation systems in the nation. UMD has its own transport system! Its awesome!! www.transportation.umd.edu And the metro is pretty darn good too. I feel safe in the area, though there is crime, just like there is in any big city. The fact that we have such good transportation services helps though. There are certain areas you might want to avoid, like some of the areas around Knox Road that have a bit of a reputation, but overall its not bad. Housing can be rather expensive around here, and you might have to hunt really hard to find a house that you consider suitable for your price range. However, because of the current housing market, you might be in better shape. hope this helps, Jen
  7. one app due on Friday, One due on the 15th

  8. Hey, So, I've taken the GRE's 3 times. The first time I was sick, and while I got a 5.5 on the analytical writing, I developed a fever during the test and got really bad scores. I accepted viewing the scores because I wasn't thinking straight, and I didn't know I could cancel them after the fact. This was stupid of me and I acknowledge it. The second time I took it, I got 520s on both sections. The third time I got a 640 on the verbal and a 400 on the Quantitative. So questions: 1. Should I take the test again? Will that look bad My scores are *everywhere*. I think I'd almost be calmer if they had just been the same on both the good tests.... 2. I feel like I really need a 1200 to be "safe". I am applying to media studies programs (for a list, see my profile). Am I over worried? 3. If I do take it again, how do I explain it and where do I explain it? 4. What I would love to do more than anything is email each program and see what they say. Ask them if they mind if I take it a fourth time, and perhaps more importantly, if they count the highest score in each category? How can I do this tactfully and not screw myself over? I really appreciate the help. I am really happy I found these forums, I intend to be very active! take care, Jen
