  1. yeah, i guess. this is simply a class i thought would help me and i didnt know how much calculus it would include. it was an honest mistake i guess, i dont think i would ever retake it, i would rather take something else. and no, i dont my advisor would realize i'm human, which is why i am scared to tell him
  2. thanks, i just dont know how to have this conversation with my advisor
  3. I'm in a class in a different dept (we have to take credits in other departments) and there is no way i can pass the class. any advice? should i take a W?

the location itself is great, close to campus and relatively safe. i think this is the best area to live in athens. i don't think they are bad apartments but i have heard bad things about parker and associates management. you have picked out the right area in my opinion and i don't have any personal experience with parker and associates so i cant say what people had issues with. All I know is that they don't have the best reputation in town.

600-650 will be plenty to spend there. I would look to rent in the five points area as you will find some nice apartments there and it is within walking distance to campus. most of the stuff there is smaller complexes so it is best to go there to check them out as they probably don't have websites. Athens is strange in terms of good/bad neighborhoods as there really are not any terrible neighborhoods there but i also would say that there are not great neighborhoods either. dont leave stuff in your car no matter where you live there. five points is probably the safest area though. start looking at the intersection of lumpkin and milledge and go out from there about a mile or two in any direction and you should be ok. there are some small complexes off cloverhurst that are cheap and quiet if i remember correctly check out dearing garden apartments, fiddler's green apartments if looking for a bigger complex
  6. Just curious, why do you care if they have a phd program? If you did your undergrad at UT, I would go to Alabama if I were you. It seems like a fine program and the fact that you will have no debt is a big plus. Tuscaloosa is not a bad town.
  7. thanks for the update, i guess i'll have to wait another week at least.
  8. Anyone still waiting to hear back from schools? Anyone make any decisions already? Anyone made any visits to programs? I'm still waiting to hear from three schools, I wish they would decide soon so I can make an informed decision. April 15th is not that far away. Still waiting on Ohio State, status says my app is still under review. I'm guessing that I have been put on a waitlist.
  9. westox, I applied to FSU for PhD. I already have a M.S. Yes, they mentioned funding in the email. I just got notice a few days ago so I wouldn't worry yet. Maybe wait until the end of next week and send them an email? They are very nice there so I wouldn't hesitate to email or call if you don't hear anything for another week. I don't understand how this all works as you and I are still waiting to hear from ohio state while others seem to have heard back from them weeks ago. I am starting to think that I will not get good news from them when I do get results.

yes, you will have to fly into atlanta. there are several shuttle companies that go from the atlanta airport to athens. most are probably around $40-55. the ride take about 1.5 hours usually depending on traffic.
  11. westox, i heard from florida state a few days ago by email, good luck. still no news from ohio state? I am waiting on them as well.
  12. Just wanted to join all the other geography applicants over here in this part of the forum. Seems like most of you guys have applied to different schools than I have, but I can probably contribute something. You can see where I have applied below and I am not too excited about my chances so far.
  13. thank you I figured I should try to get a third person. Maybe I'll just ask one of the professors that I am currently taking. I can stop by their office a few times before I ask for letters of rec. to discuss a paper or something.
  14. I'm applying to masters programs and have already sent everything in except for my letters of recommendation. My problem is that every school I'm applying to requires three letters. I only know two professors well enough to write me letters. I go to a very large school and these are the only two professors that know me well enough to write a recommendation. What do you think schools would do if I only sent them two letters instead of the required three? Or should I just ask a professor at my school who doesn't really know me well? It's been a while since I have had a job or any volunteer work so asking an employer is out of the question. I saved the hardest part of the application process for the end and now it seems as though I may not be able to complete it.
  15. Well looking back I realize that I should have made my purpose statement more focused. My specialization is economic geography (specifically location analysis and/or international trade). I mentioned a professor or two in my purpose statement for each school that I would like to work with, but I haven't contacted them yet. I doubt schools will take the GRE very seriously if english is not your native language. I found the verbal to be difficult, so I dont see how they would expect a foreign student to do well on it.
  16. I just wanted to thank you guys for the help and let you know where I applied. purpose statement: not very good letters of rec: good GRE: V:490 Q:710 AW: 4.5 3.3 overall gpa (if you dont count my freshman year(my fun year), it is around 3.6-3.7) sociology major from a large but not great state university in the Southeast applied to masters programs at: SUNY Buffalo SUNY Binghamton University of Washington University of Florida University of Georgia University of North Carolina at Charlotte University of Kentucky Not too sure of my chances at any of these schools, but I guess we'll see.
