I think you have a pretty competitive application!! I agree with slpdreamer, I'm pretty sure grades are weighted heavily at U of T. My supervisor graduated from U of T and when she applied, she had no research experience, the bare minimum for clinical experiences but had high grades + great references. I do think you should apply to UWO as well however, because from what people have been saying in this thread, they seem to have a more lenient preference towards clinical exp. and yours sounds diverse and fitting for their program. I am currently talking to a few users here (shoutout to those who inboxed me haha) and to a few SLPs at work who graduated from McGill as well to hear something I might not already know about the graduate programs. kk- I know about the summer thing too but I think the longer practicum time will really help in becoming a stronger clinician. I hear McGill is very research and theory-based which is also so important and I do well with these kind of courses so it comes down to finances too and how practical it will be to move to MTL. Thanks for your input! I'll make a decision before next week I appreciate your advice and insight!

Hi guys! I confirmed my acceptance to U of T a while back but I got accepted off the waitlist at McGill today. aaaaaah. I know I wrote down reasons why I chose U of T over Western but at the time of application, U of T and McGill were tied as my top choices. Can anyone who got accepted at McGill and U of T post or PM me about why they chose their final choice? I know the modular curriculum at U of T is a huge thing (and why I instantly chose it from UWO) + the networking opportunities in Toronto, but I'm just so drawn to Montreal and the prestige of McGill and the idea of bilingual placements. I'm torn. Please let me know if you have any insight! Also does anyone know any details about deferring the McGill admission? Thanks, much appreciated!

I think the reference form for ORPAS asks your reference about the hours or time spent supervising the applicant and the dates/hours that you spent at the volunteering place. I think if anything you'd have to document your hours and have the SLP sign off on it! If you volunteer at multiple places you just fill out the form on ORPAS.

Did anyone here get into Western and not into U of T / vice versa? I'm quite curious as to what they look for in the admissions committee (in Ontario) and whether one school prefers clinical experience over reference, etc. I know one student who got into UWO but not U of T because she had everything great except for quality academic reference letters but that was a few years ago and was wondering if anything's changed.

This is an interesting take, can I ask how unrelated it is? I'd consider a lot of factors like what makes you think your application is not that strong. I feel like going into an unrelated Master's with no real intention to really finish it/if you really want to be an SLP would be a waste of time and money and I'd instead spend that time working on making my application stronger. You can always do this then apply to the same master's AND slp next January. Also, I'm not sure about UofO but the schools I applied to gave me a conditional offer that I finish my program with a certain average. Are you only limited to Ottawa?

Thanks! I was going to answer people's questions about why I chose UofT over UWO but I felt I was heavily biased because I did my undergrad at U of T. Plus I live in the GTA so that was a big factor. I didn't want to move to London and worry about housing on top of tuition. I love downtown Toronto and I volunteered/worked in one of the faculty members' labs for experience and so I knew it was a high quality program with brilliant researchers and faculty. All my volunteer hours (clinical) were under SLPs who graduated from U of T and they only had positive things about it. One of the biggest things that I liked was the curriculum - I liked that they do the units so I wouldn't have to worry about preparing for clients while doing the academic term and when it's time for placement I can really immerse myself in the experience without worrying about school work. I also feel like I'd have better networking opportunities in the GTA because they're affiliated with so many networks and hospitals but I'm biased since I never actually went to Western to talk about their clinical focus.
