  1. Big hugs, WT. Hang in there!
  2. I would second MM's advice on knowing your SOP and WS. In my case I had a pretty intense interview---I was asked to situate my work within the context of various bodies of scholarship. As you can see from my earlier posts here, I thought I had bombed the interview but the professors wrote me very kind responses to my thank-you emails saying how much they enjoyed our conversation. If you do have time and you know the professors with whom you will be interviewing, read over their bios/CVs. In my case it gave me an insight into "fit" that I hadn't even thought about when I applied, in a good way, and made me warm up to the professors immediately.
  3. So great. Congratulations!!!
  4. Thanks everyone for your "how to get out of a funk" suggestions! Hannalore, your suggestion was the best. I'd put myself in ultra savings mode---I have two international trips coming up next month, and with trying to plan for an international move with all of my glorious things in the summer to wherever I end up, I'd been penny pinching, minus the splurge of starting yoga classes at a new studio. I had a wonderful sashimi dinner yesterday and marveled at how just that one little treat changed my entire evening---I ended up cleaning the apartment a bit, even! I woke up to a day of responding to emails.
  5. Any news, anyone? I keep on waiting for the day when I will finally hear back from the Comp Lit departments...
  6. I'm not in the English or Comp Lit departments at UCLA, so we have different contacts, but it's good to hear that you've had good discussions with your department so far! My POI there is the DGS for the department, and while I initially thought this may be a double-edged sword for asking about finances (no chance to ask for a second opinion from your POI before talking to the DGS) I think those conversations will go well as long as I can convince myself first that being direct is OK. Again, still learning how to step up here...
  7. Most likely yes but you should ask to be sure. I'm flying out to LA from Korea and the department is providing financial support that covers part of the cost for the trip.
  8. Thanks guys!! Your positive vibes are much appreciated
  9. Totally on the same boat with you asking funding questions, MM. I have a generous offer from UCLA but I do have a few questions I wanted to ask RE: funding and was wondering to whom I should be directing these questions and when. Thank you for this, proflorax! It's so difficult to step up and really own this glorious position of being the powerful, newly admitted student. But I was able to negotiate costs that I would incur for visiting, which I think was a good first step in talking finances with the department.
  10. No need for doom and gloom---you could be on the waitlist as well! I checked on the online application site---there was a link on the front page to the decision letter. Thanks for the encouragement! Sorry to hear, splintercat. And thanks for sharing what your advisor mentioned about the reasoning behind the admissions results.
  11. Am doing all of the above. Would you believe it if I told you I have lost the appetite for shopping?! Absolutely terrible but true...
  12. I don't know if it's all the anxiety in the last two weeks, but I've been having trouble keeping a normal and productive rhythm to my days. I don't have any real obligations right now, and I thought I'd get some fun reading done, travel, and clean the apartment but I usually find myself sleeping and waking at odd hours and leaving the house only to meet people. My house remains a pit...and I'm incredibly exhausted even though I'm trying to do good by eating well and exercising regularly. Any tips anyone has on snapping out of this slothful state would be appreciated...
  13. How are people doing? It seems like the Harvard EALC decisions are out (in addition to the admits). Just learned that I've been waitlisted.
  14. WT!!! This is fantastic news, congratulations!!!! And congratulations to others on their acceptances on the ominous Friday the 13th.
  15. Waitlisted by Harvard, applied for non-English national lit. The letter reads that it was "due to financial constraints." For those from application seasons past: Is it kosher to ask the department what their wait list policies are? The letter simply reads that the university admissions office will get back to me once they have an opening in the department.
  16. Big hugs, everyone!! Hang in there.
  17. Congrats to the new admits and those with multiple acceptances, you lucky ducks!
  18. Seriously you guys, Comp Lit departments what is UP...crickets chirping in my inbox right now.
  19. Is it in person/video or via phone? Anyways good luck! Be sure to look through the Interview thread in our forum when preparing---I know it helped me a lot.
  20. Great thread! To stave off the freezing winter temps I am listening to lots of Soca beats. I need the sugary upbeat music to get me through the days!
  21. 23 when I started law school; 32 when I will be starting my PhD this fall!
  22. For UCLA actually, but would love to meet other Asianists in the area Also, Harvard EALC admits---congrats! And care to share how you received your news---email from the department or the POI?
  23. Not to overpost here but...that moment when you see an acceptance from your top choice program on the Results page and you've not received any emails yet from the school. Crippling anxiety is back, full on...
  24. And it looks like I may be visiting LA in early March. If anyone is around or will be visiting around the same time, would love to meet!
