Fall 2015 Applicants

So glad to hear that you're healthy, jhefflol. I just about had a mini heart attack while reading earlier posts in this thread about your visit to the doctor's. Big hugs! -
The Interview
fancypants09 replied to hypervodka's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I so feel you on this one, this is exactly how I felt after my Michigan interview. First, you probably didn't do as badly as you think you did, seriously. Second, one of the things I did to put my mind at ease---I wrote a follow-up to the question that I thought I had completely bombed (for me, it was on the theoretical crux of my writing sample) in my thank you emails to my interviewers. I don't think the follow-up had much impact on the faculty's impressions of me or the result (they were super sweet and full of praises though I didn't get in for fit purposes), but it helped me clear my mind about my research and to keep the conversation going. Hope this helps -
Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)

Congrats to all the new admits in the last two days! -
What are you reading?
fancypants09 replied to queennight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
For me speed depends on the material and the purpose for reading. If I'm reading for fun I can read up to 60 pages an hour---no problem devouring novels for funsies (this is why I can't understand my painful read of Donna Tartt's latest). But if I'm reading for work, then it's at 10 pages an hour, regardless of genre, language, size of font and page. -

Sorry, just saw this now---I had stopped reading, full stop, with the onset of anxieties last week. I'm only slowly recovering from the anxiety + excitement. Exhausting, really, with no desire to read whatsoever. I have, however, made it to page 180 of The Goldfinch and while it's picked up a bit, it's not quite the page-turner that everyone has been raving about. -
Korean GIFs! Love it!

Thanks for the update. Anyone else have information on other programs?

Congrats on Columbia! I understand the nerves---it's much like going on a first date! But I'm sure you'll be fine, they've accepted you already

Hang in there! I know too well what being gripped with anxiety feels like, but seriously news will pop up when you are least expecting it. -

No worries about being in the wrong thread!! Completely excusable given the excitement Congrats!!! -
Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)

CONGRATULATIONS!!! -
Congrats splintercat! So great to see potential future cohorts on GC FYI to people waiting on Michigan: I heard back from my POI today that acceptances were sent out on Friday. Unfortunately I was rejected, but seriously no hard feelings there---the POI mentioned that it was fit more than anything, and said that she would be happy to remain a point of contact throughout my career regardless of where I end up going. Here's to the start of a new week...may it bring all of us great news

Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)
fancypants09 replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Congrats to the weekend admits!! And joining in on the rejections: Received my first rejection from Michigan today. No hard feelings though---POI wrote me the nicest rejection mail ever (if those are still possible!), and mentioned that it was more of a fit issue than my materials. Here's to another week of waiting for good news! -

Congratulations everyone! -
Sorry for the late response---it was kind of a crazy day yesterday. Will send you a PM RE: my research interests---while I'm happy to share, I'd like to maintain this somewhat anonymous state on GC until I hear back from all the schools. I'm happy to share this and other details (stats, etc.) with others who may be interested. Thanks for your understanding. And big congrats on the UCLA acceptance yourself, on top of your other amazing options!

Not a problem RE: downvote---it took me a while to figure out how this place worked, too. The email I received did include an official letter. I'm not sure whether the program sends out acceptances all at once or in waves. I've been pretty active on the lit forum here since my interest is in modern comparative literatures, and have found the community incredibly supportive and helpful. Would love to see the same vibe here, especially since Asian Studies is a small field!

Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)
fancypants09 replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm out of upvotes for the day already, but thanks everyone---GC is the greatest!!! The acceptance means so much to me because I'm no spring chicken and I don't have a lit/language degree---just an intense interest and some coursework. Incredibly grateful, humbled, excited, etc. -

Not an English applicant, but you guys, just got my first acceptance to UCLA! National lit department. Had a good, happy cry in my apartment. Here's wishing good news to all! -
UCLA decisions are out you guys! My first acceptance of the season. Very excited as they are one of my top choices!

Big hugs you guys!! I'm off alcohol as I'm on a health kick (or trying to be on it, at any rate), but I've eaten through an entire long and fat carrot---I had them on hand in case I needed some comfort eating at home. -
Fall 2015 Applicants
fancypants09 replied to tingdeh's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
OK guys, FWIW I spoke to the department secretary about my snafu and s/he reiterated what hypervodka said: It wouldn't matter at this stage because the admissions process is closed! Decision letters will be mailed out in a few weeks s/he said. No word about emails. My. God. It is all coming to an end. -

Alright, having a spaz-out moment RE: applications here. I was just checking my online application to my top choice, you know, just casually looking over the online application---first time since submitting it in December, mind you---when I notice that there is information in my biography section that I DID NOT PUT IN THERE, and that does not correlate to my information. For example, it provides a US State when my mailing address is CLEARLY not in the US, and gives me an international visa classification when I CLEARLY don't need one. Needless to say, going to call the department secretary (as annoying as this may seem, and as late as this may seem) to see if any other pieces have fallen apart here...everything else looks fine from my end but who knows, as those fields didn't contain that information about me shortly after I submitted everything in December! Not a good time to be having these freak outs when I'm also waiting for the decision letters...dear god... -
Waiting Game--how do you deal with the waiting anxiety?
fancypants09 replied to procedural memory's topic in Waiting it Out
I always have these incredibly hopeful moments of breaking out of the anxiety that's got me clamped down, but the last twenty-four hours have not been pretty: Constantly waking up in the middle of the night, a twenty-four hour carb/junk food binge (bring on the caramel popcorn and Auntie Anne's pretzels), and listening to Habanera from Bizet's Carmen non-stop. Need to get out of this funk or February is going to go to waste pretty quickly... -
Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)
fancypants09 replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Congratulations! For me, a second presumed rejection---the program sent official acceptance emails out today and I didn't receive one. No biggie though, just like the first one I knew it was a bit of a stretch because I didn't see myself fitting in with the culture of the school---applied because of a recommendation from one of mr LOR writers to do so. No emails from programs but two corporate head hunters reached out to me again today...seriously guys, it's been more than six months since I left that world. This is the cruel joke for me today, more so than the implied rejections...
