  1. oh I got 4.0 on the first one. But so if you got 163 math and 4.0 on AWA first time and got 162 math and 4.5 AWA 2nd time you would send the first one?
  2. So my main question is which set to send to schools. In my first gre I got 163 math and 4.0 on AWA and today I got 162 math. If i get better score on AWA which set should I send? (I have same verbal score) so the gist of it is whether 1 point on math matters more than 0.5 rating on AWA or not (I will be applying to psych phd and masters) thank you! *just making sure, I can choose which set to send right?
  3. I like the 2nd one more. 1st one sounds somewhat general and trite
  4. why don't you call the school...?
  5. Thank you all for the responses. I am just still confused because all the answers are different haha. One section of my SOP is going to be how I got into liking research, and I was planning to mention this high school experience as the fire that lit up my motivation in research (1 or 2 sentences). Then go on about how my next research experience taught me more and more. Would it work?
  6. Hi, I was just wondering if it is okay to include my research experience in my sop and C.V I read that I shouldn't talk about anything before college, but my first research experience happened in high school at Stanford University. (through a highschool research program between my high school and stanford) Although I was just a research assistant who did minimal things, I was able to learn about research and how i liked them. I am planning to talk briefly about them in my research experience paragraph in SOP and include it on my C.V as my other college research experience. any thoughts on this matter? Thanks
  7. Hi guys, so i am applying to both masters and phd and I would like some help differentiating the two how similar or different are the two essays? For example, I know that I should talk about my research interest in phd sop but not in masters sop. Can the general structure and context for both be similar except in one part? Can any of you guys give me a simple answer indicating the key differences that I should be aware of? Thanks in advance
  8. Hey thanks for the input. I didn't get LOR from the professor who is the head of the lab, and I feel like I would not be able to ask him to sign the letter written by post-doc. Hopefully post-doc first suggests this idea, but i feel like that wont happen
  9. Alright, thats reassuring. Thank you
  10. So I worked at a lab for a year at one of the ivies I worked under a post-doc first who is still a post-doc at the lab. After the project, I worked under another post-doc who is now an assistant professor at a european university (happened after I left the lab). I know that the post-doc who is still a post-doc at the lab knows me better and will give me a better LOR, but I heard that I should get a rec from a professor and not a post doc So who should I ask? Post-doc with better LOR or assistant professor (who was also a post doc when I worked for him)
  11. try to retake the gre to bring up the verbal. write a strong personal statement that could possibly discuss your lack of research, and still demonstrate your interest and ability to do well in research. another thing you can do is to talk to your recommendation writer from your research to discuss well about your research skills and stuff
  12. lol why did you even post this if you are just going to disagree with what everyone is saying? You need good gpa or gre (unless the program doesnt take it like your case) again you are applying to a graduate school and not a research lab you still have to take classes and stuff and low gpa is a good indication of how well you will do in class. even if you are an amazing researcher, you cant graduate if you fail the course. i suggest you do post-bac or take classes in local college to improve your grade or show that you can do well in classes. plus you are saying you can't do anything about your gpa now, but that is why you should take GRE. high gre score somewhat makes up for low gpa. also you said you are smart, and alot of smart people dont even really study for gre and still do well
  13. what was the best score? and which programs are you applying to
  14. Verbal seems fine, writing is little low but shouldnt be a big problem since you are applying from India. If there was a possible point to be concerned about, it would be the quant score. I think you will be in the average range for the program you are applying at berkely. but i think its good enough for the cutoff line so no worries
  15. This is not true because alot of masters for psychology are clinical, which is competitive as that of phD
  16. So the main question is that how is having only one letter by the Professor from the class I have taken. I have a professor that I took a class in senior year and helped him editing his book as a research assistant. I know that you are advised to have at least one letter from someone that taught you in class. But would having just one bad relative to having two? I am planning to get two other ones from faculties at the lab I worked at (but never taught me). Another question is choosing my last writer I have worked with two person at a lab in top institution (one was a visiting post doc and the other was a post doc at the lab) I have worked close with both and the visiting post doc is now an assistant professor back at his country and the post doc is still a post doc i believe. I feel like the current post doc would write me a better with recommendation, but I heard from someone that I need to get all the letters from someone with title 'professor'. any thoughts on this?
  17. So I did a research at a University during my sophomore year in college (just graduated). I asked the person for a reference letter when I applied to a job this summer. He sent it, but then I realized I never gave any feedback to him (I didn't get the job, but I forgot to tell him about it. although I did say thank you right after). I haven't talked to him since, and I need to ask him for a recommendation letter for december. I feel like he would be annoyed since I didn't follow up on him and I am asking for a recommendation letter again. Do they think this way? I was wondering what is the best way to approach him.
  18. So I usually brainstorm about stuff and then email to myself. So I was brainstorming about my SOP and I accidentally sent few lines of weird stuff over the email. It was just like using words like 'blah' and no structure or use of the proper grammar. I sent it yesterday and just found out about it today. I sent an apologize letter just now, but do you think this will affect me somehow?
  19. Hi, I am applying to a masters program at Harvard, and I realized that there is no interview process during the application. I have also made a visit to the campus, and the admission officer told me there is no need for me to email the professors, which is usual for Phd application. Is this mean that they will solely look at numbers and writings in my application? Is SOP the only way to show how fit I am for the program?
