I am wondering the same thing. I am glad I am not the only one who hasn't heard anything. I looked into my past emails and when I applied in 2013, they sent the email with that log in info on Feb 19th :s
-
I know that is why I didn't apply there haha! Speechful, I am sure you will get into Ontario. Keep your head up I am concerned about my application because I do not have a gpa in the 3.9s.. that's what I meant by what chance do others have. I know it is the whole package, and I think I have a good one, but I really don't know anymore.
-
This makes me super nervous. Your stats are absolutely amazing. 3.95 gpa, lots of volunteering, and you still didnt get in? How does anyone else have any hope
-
Sorry to hear that you didn't get in r4chung. Good to see that you are being positive about it though! On a side note, has anyone heard from Western about creating a student account? I haven't and I am starting to worry that maybe they didn't get my application because I haven't gotten any emails from either U of T or Western.
-
of course not. They are weighted equal to all other courses. The only difference is that the summer session is considered separate to the rest of the year (fall and winter). The only thing that will get affected is if they have to go back another year for your last 20 credits since they will use an average of the whole year. Summer courses will not be included in the whole year (fall and winter) average, but rather they would be averaged with other courses you took during the same summer. For example, if some of your last 20 courses were taken in the summer, they would average all the courses you took that summer and use that average to calculate the GPA for however many credits you need to make to make the last 20 credits. Not sure if I explained it, but taking pre-reqs in the summer is definitely not bad.
-
Hi speechies, yes, summer semester courses are considered separate from fall and winter and they are averaged apart from fall and winter semester courses.

Does anyone know if we have to sign up for some application system for Western? 2 years ago when I applied in 2013 they made us sign up to some application where you could check the status of our application? I dont remember what its called but I haven't heard anything from either U of T or Western so I am assuming I do not have to do anything?
-
Hi everyone, I would not worry so much about the cGPA. I have spoken to both U of T and Western about whether they look at the cGPA and they both said no. They probably only calculated the cGPA so that the schools could see what your GPA for the last year was, which does matter. My cGPA is at 3.5, which is really low, because I took a lot of pre-med courses in 1st and 2nd year (organic chem, calculus, physics)... i am not worried though so I dont think you guys should! (I hope I dont have to be worried haha )
-
That's unfortunate! I am glad that at least the schools seem understanding of events that are out of our control! Lucky for me U of T is my first choice so I am happy to hear that news!
-
Thank you so much guys! I am glad I am not the only one having a heart attack. After reading that email ORPAS sent you, I think we should be okay!
-
Hi everyone, I am basically having a breakdown! I went to check my ORPAS and it says that one of my references is currently outstanding! I honestly hounded the professor so many times and she promised me she was going to send it in so that it would arrive on January 9th... I dont know what I am going to do! Will they disqualify me from the application? I honestly worked so hard for this application, over one year, I AM FREAKING OUT!! This is my worst nightmare.
-
I was wondering if anyone knew whether ORPAS rounds up the GPA to the nearest decimel place? My average in my last 20 half credits comes up to 3.795. I was hoping for the 3.8 but one course dropped my mark down to a 3.795. I know in the end its so silly and meaningless, but I would really like to be in the 3.8 range, so that I can feel a little bit more competitive! Good luck everyone, I hope we make it! Our hard work and preparation for the application is finally over, and now its just time to play the waiting game!

I have heard that the job market in Toronto is pretty saturated, but I do not think its as bad as a lot of other jobs. I think if you are willing to be flexible on where you work, and perhaps work in more rural locations or out of province, it wont be as hard. However, I occasionally look at job postings for SLPs and I do seem quite a few in the GTA.

Hi Meggle, This will be my second year applying. I applied in 2013, during my fourth year of undergrad and I obviously did not get in. Looking back, I know I really did not have a chance because I knew nothing about the field and my marks werent amazing enough to get away with just the minimum volunteering. I decided to take a year to work on my application and get a full time job so I can save some money for when I do get in. What ive done since I have applied: I took on like 10 different volunteer positions - I wanted to get as much experience as possible in many different settings. At the information sessions I went to, they said that they really like seeing applicants who have a wide variety of SLP experiences. I honestly got involved in all aspects of the field! (And now that I have done it, I am so glad I have because I have learned so much from my experiences and I know I will have an advantage during my placements. It has also really proven to me that SLP is something that I want to do!) I networked - I honestly tried to get into contact with as many different SLPs as possible, to get feedback from them about the field, what they liked, disliked etc. I also contacted several students who were currently in the program and got a better idea of what the program was like. I boosted my GPA to 3.79/3.8 - I took courses at Athabasca and worked my butt off to try and get 4.0 in the majority of all the additional courses I took. (Your GPA already sounds quite high so this does not sound as necessary or you.) I got new clinical references - when I first applied, I used a SLP who honestly was not very pleasant and I truly think she was not happy with her job (She ended up leaving her job about three months after). I dont think she wrote me a fantastic reference. Since then, I have obtained two other references from SLPs who I have become very close with and who I am confident will write me a great reference. Honestly, I do get discouraged sometimes and I am so anxious that I will not get in, even after all that I have tried to do.. however, I know that if I do not get in this year, I will be applying again the year after (third time is the charm ). If SLP is something you really want to do, which it does sound like in your case, then try to be positive and strive harder to be the best you can be. In the end, after all your efforts, you will become a more well-rounded person, regardless of if you got in or not. If you do not feel you are ready to apply, then take another year to keep working on your application.. I know I wasn't ready last application season. Good luck! I really do hope all of us get in, because it is obvious how badly we want this!

I was given this email address when I called in.. orpas@ouac.on.ca. They did answer me, so I would try that.

This is what I find so confusing. I just wish they would post the average GPA of people who got accepted. Obviously everyone knows that GPA isnt the only thing, but it is such a huge part (especially for U of T), I would like to know what I should strive for to be competitive!
-
Hi everyone, does anyone happen to know what a competitive GPA would be to get into U of T or Western? I know that it is the whole package that counts, but in my case, I feel like my GPA would be my lowest point (I have great references, and lots of volunteer experience). I am hoping to have a 3.8 GPA according to ORPAS, however, one of the professors for my classes is a very hard marker and basically told me that most people do not get above an 85 in the course. If I get a lower mark in that particular course, my GPA will drop to 3.79. I know that it is so minimal of a drop, but I am so worried as I have no clue what is even considered a competitive mark. Thanks!!

Hi Persis, It is a half year course.. there is another course listed that could fulfill the other stats pre-requisite. I believe MATH215? Athabasca courses are accepted by all Canadian schools as it is an accredited university. However, I think that U of T is the only one that accepts PSYC304 as a second statistics credit Take a look for more info about pre-reqs: http://www.slp.utoronto.ca/admissions/prerequisites/athabasca/ https://rehabilitation.ualberta.ca/departments/communication-sciences-and-disorders/msc-in-speech-language-pathology/admissions/admission-requirements/pre-requisite-courses/athabasca-university http://www.uwo.ca/fhs/csd/programs/files/prereq_courses_slp.pdf

@ Persis: I actually just updated one of my statistics marks with Athabasca. It is PSYC304, called Research Methods in Psychology. It actually doesn't have any mathematical component in it, just theoretical about how to conduct experiments and that sort of thing. I definitely would recommend it as I got a 95% in it, with a regular amount of effort.

Hi everyone, I also have been freaking out about the application for almost one year now. I applied right after my undergrad two years ago and didn't get any acceptances. I have since been working full time and just trying to make my application as competitive as possible. I plan on applying to U of T and Western, with U of T being my top choice. Over the past two years, I have gotten as much volunteer experience as possible, working with adults, children, in private settings, in hospitals, in outpatient settings and in community settings. I updated several of my marks and boosted my cGPA to around 3.8 and pre-req GPA to around 3.88. I am super anxious about the application as I would really like to get in for next year. I have dedicated two years of hard work to getting in, and I would really like to make my dream come true. Good luck everyone

Hi speechies, From what I understand, I believe courses taken in a summer term are considered separately. So if you took one course in the summer before your fourth year, that mark from the course will be the average of the entire summer term and is considered separately from the fall and winter term. If you have 20 half credits taken after that summer course, then the summer course will not be counted. However if you have your fourth year marks, the summer course, and the third year marks all included in the last 20 half credits, then they will count back in order of when the courses were taken from to get your last 20 marks. If this summer course makes up part of the last 20, then they will count it. Any time where they have to obtain marks from another year (say for example, they need to take only 2 marks from your second year to make up the last 20), then what they do is they take the average of the entire fall/winter semester and use that average as the mark for however many courses are needed to make up the last 20 credits. Summer courses are counted apart from fall/winter and would not be averaged for the full year, but rather counted like its own year. Hope this makes sense!

Duh! Thanks for clearing that up..
-
Thanks I will definitely apply to UWO as well! I noticed you will be going to U of T next year - congratulations! Did you have research experience? Would you mind sharing your stats with me?
-
Thanks so much everyone. I really appreciate the support. I was honestly feeling so worried because a few people have told me that research is very important. I have worked so hard this past year and a half and I would hate for it to all go for nothing just because I am unable to find a research position that works with my busy schedule! Thanks for that! Just curious, what would be the other 20% then?

Thanks so much!! Does anyone know about U of T?
