I have heard great things about the VEF - Although it is not as popular as NSF, NDSEG or the like since it is only for specific group (Vietnamese), however it is still well-known. Fellowship is good since the school does not have to take care of you - in short, you come to work (research) for them free of charge so it boosts your chance in that sense. Also schools like to brag that their students are fellows of this and that. I know UIUC in particular has accepted many Vietnamese student sponsored by VEF. Are you applying for M.S. or Ph.D. program ? Ph.D. is a research degree so emphasize on research - it is perfectly fine if your projects yield no good result, as long as you show research potential, you're fine. In your Statement of purpose, tell them briefly about the work, what you've done, discovered, learned ... any thing from there that you would like to pursue in the future. LOR likewise is crucial, if it's from someone well-known in the field, can comment about your working capability, etc ... Just curious, what school are you from ? You might think it's unknown but the admission committee probably do since they have looked at thousand of applications, hundred of schools over years.

Othello, congrats --- Cal is awesome!!! Did you get their decision over email or phone or normal postal system ? agm, I thought CMU's general deadline is 12/15 ? I also apply to GaTech and find its application process inconvenient, they require you to submit the application BEFORE sending invitation emails to recommender's.

Hey, congrats on the fellowship - it should be a tremendous boost to your application (fellowships are prestigious and the schools don't have to take care of your tuition/stipends etc). Can you tell us what fellowship this is ? Also, I believe most top schools will probably look for research potentials so you want to improve upon that. Any previous project ? Doesn't have to yield good results ..

My mails to profs are very short email listing the below: - My current edu status (e.g., senior at school in major...) - My research interest (<- customized so it matches with the profs' current works) => this leads to why I wrote the email - My goal and what it has to do with that prof (e.g., I am applying for Ph.d. program at school X, and would like to know if that profs consider taking students for the time period Y). - at the end, have a link to CV or webpage listing publications. I don't know how helpful it can be when it comes to admission. However I figure it can't hurt, the worst case is they just ignore the mail.

I tried to contact all that I feel have interests matched with mine (about 3-4 on average at each school), 95% of them didn't reply but several did. I figure it worths it, in the worst case probably they will ignore and delete my mail. Hopefully they probably won't hold it against me just because I send them a mail (which they probably didn't even read it pass the subject line).

I applied to dozen of schools , cmu, uiuc, washu, caltech, gatech, umn, brown, uva, vtech, unm , umich, notre dame. What about you ?

Depends on your area of interest. I am from Penn State and I know we are pretty weak in the Computer Theory, Evolutionary Computing etc, parts. ... But if you're more into wireless networking, hardware, high performance then PSU has very active groups for those.

I just took the GRE last month and got a 640Q, 360V, and 3.5 A. I am graduating w/ a M.S. also in C.S from Penn State. My GPA is about ~3.3. In short, my academic status as well as standard test scores are not competitive at all. Since I am applying to a Ph.D. program at top researching schools (>> PSU), I heavily rely on my research experience. I have ~10 publication papers and ~3 journals (all are at well-known places). One of those being selected as best papers. Two of the LOR writers are my co-authors so they should be quite good. That's my status, do you think I should retake the GRE ? From now till Dec when most applications are due I have 1.5 months, I can continue my research project (and probably get another paper out) or concentrating on the GRE (I think I can improve the Q score to 700+ and V to above 400). Between Grad school and fellowships applications, which one emphasizes more greatly toward academic status ? TIA,

Are you pursuing a Ph.D. or M.S. ? Ph.D. is heavily research oriented (especially at top schools). Being Hispanic does not help getting in grad school; however, there are several organizations giving funds / research opportunities to minority in science/math/engr ...

Is there anyone applying for this fellowship ? The deadline is within 5 days !

I used the PowerPrep software. What troubles me the most is the timing issues, I do calculations very slowing, The worst yet, when I get panic about time, I will spend even more time on each question (either that or guess). In contrast in the verbal section which I basically don't know anything, I finished the entire section within 20 minutes (since I just guess on everything)

My GRE score: 360V 650Q, and 3.5A ... I usually get 700+ for Q in practice. Oh well, doubt if I want to go through the testing process again. Guess not many opportunities in Fellowships with these scores

I hope it's a good sharing resources , when you have a google account you can also modify the calendar, put your own deadlines and share with us also. So far I have about 4 Fellowships deadlines there (nagivate to October and also on) ... Soon I'll add university application deadlines.
