A professor from one of the programs I was admitted to requested to speak on the phone with me to "learn more about [me] and and answer any questions" that I might have about the program. In order to prepare, I was simply wondering (1) what might be good things to bring up about myself; and (2) what are some crucial questions to ask about the program? Speaking with some colleagues/professors, they seem to mention that it's a good idea to ask the program's attrition rate, its placement history, and the proportion of students finishing on time. Any thoughts?

No kidding haha. Luckily I work somewhere that offers quite a lot of vacation days. Based on my results so far, I kind of wish I would have targeted more schools in the top-10. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

Thanks a lot! I hope that you hear good news from Berkeley and that you'll get accepted off of the Harvard waitlist. Given your already pretty stellar results, I would bet you'll have some very good news coming your way in the coming weeks.

Was accepted to Penn State a few hours ago. The Director at Florida emailed me saying he was impressed with my application, asking if I was at all still interested in joining the program. I will decline.

Masters in Top 5 program or PhD in Program ranked 70

Private sector work likely won't help you. What I think may help you is to get some actual research experience as an RA, perhaps for a professor or for the Fed, BLS, IMF, World Bank, etc. I wish I could say something to help you regarding Tufts, but I don't really know of their program at all. Maybe you can reach out to a current student there and ask them about the program? -
There's a couple U of M acceptances out . Good luck to you.

Did you ever consider working for a year? I feel like it might not be necessary to increase your debt level. If you're already a qualified candidate, look for an RA position somewhere. -
Anyone know when Michigan and/or Yale statistics decisions are supposed to roll out? Last year, they seemed to have rolled out what would have been last week.

Same here. I think my flight lands at like 10:30 PM local time because I didn't want to take off an extra day of work if I didn't have to. We'll probably be on the same shuttle to/from CS haha.
-
Yep I'll be there. Kind of upset they have my shuttle leaving CS at 6:30 AM for a 1:00 flight though. I'm debating whether or not I should check out the nightlife and just suffer/sleep on the flight back home. How about you? Are you going?

@TenuousAtBest: You were the one who was upset about their quant score on the GRE, right? It's nice to see that such a stupid test does not hold so much weight for a lot of admissions. Looks like all that hard work in those tough math classes really paid off.

You can probably live quite comfortably in Chicago with that amount of money. Chicago is surprisingly affordable for how large of a city it is. Hyde Park is a nice area, though, so the apartments there (despite being on the south side) are more expensive than surrounding neighborhoods, which are not so nice. Probably the cheapest you could find for a studio is around $700, but don't forget to tack on utilities. As much as it isn't ideal, Chicago is significantly more affordable if you have a roommate.
-
Lol thanks for that. I've also been doing a lot of Googling. Pretty happy to see that you can live in the area for like $500 a month for a spacious 1br/1ba. Coming from DC, it almost seems like cheating to have rent so cheap. @Maxtini: If you read the thread, it says that people don't necessarily NEED a car, but it would be difficult to not have one. Maybe you want to look into leasing a car instead of buying one. No, the driving tests in the US are not that difficult (I'm fairly certain the tests are quite similar across all states). Probably the most difficult thing on the test is parallel parking, but, at least in my home state of Indiana, you do it without a car behind you.

Most positive way to deal with a rejection I've ever seen. Props. Were all of you applying for the machine learning program? I had considered applying to it, but I wasn't sure if my interests in ML were definite.

Berkeley is in the Bay Area and is one of the most expensive places to live in the United States. It's 72% higher than the national average (source).
-
That's all they give you? How unfortunate. I'm still waiting for my decision, but I'm pretty sure I would decline them if they accept me knowing this. Check out padmapper.com. It consolidates apartment listings across a plethora of web sites, including Craigslist. Looks like you can get a place near campus for around $900/month. That's not too bad, but still difficult living off $20k per year. Good luck to you.

Looks like for the PhD they have already admitted a couple this year. http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=iowa+state+statistics

I don't think that this necessarily hurt you. Judging from the results, it seems like they exclusively admit people who have at least taken the exam. Granted, the lowest score I could find of the admits was 820, but I did not see a single person who was admitted that had not taken the exam. It's probably the most competitive program out there, given the school's reputation, the program's reputation, as well as the location. Congrats on Washington. You have an amazing fallback if Stanford doesn't work out.

They keep a list of first jobs upon graduation. Indeed, no one has placed in a statistics department, but quite a few have placed in Finance/Economics departments. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing--just depends on one's research interests. Still, many more have ended up working for the public or private sector (e.g., the Fed, Goldman, BCG). So if one really wants an academic job, maybe it is not the best place to go after all.

Someone just posted an acceptance. Good luck.

Is this for biostats or statistics?

Not sure if this will help or not. http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/stata/faq/odbc.htm

Thanks for the info! So I don't like my chances for that particular program then haha. I would be very interested though--my undergrad was in economics and I currently work as an RA at the IMF, so my experience with econometrics actually exceeds that of statistics.
