  1. This has all been an elaborate catfish; we're really just one person.
  2. As a matter of fact, they do. It's not clear if it's an annual thing--the ETS site only says the percentile score is in flux after you take it, and will reflect a "recent" batch of examinees, not the cohort you originally tested with.
  3. Why wait until then? I mean, a boy needs business cards.
  4. You leave GC for a conf. for a few days, and look what happens--so much good news! Congratulations, admits all!
  5. According to the Medieval Institute (I didn't apply for English) there are also new rules put out by the graduate school this year that give departments more autonomy in setting up their admissions procedures. The Medieval Institute did an initial Skype interview round (which they haven't done before) followed up by a finalist weekend--but the invitations for that only went out yesterday, two weeks to the day before it begins. The impression I got from them is the new grad school rules mean that departments are trying out some new things, but that because of that some of the kinks aren't fully out of this year's app processes.
  6. WHAAAAAAA?! I mean, I told you so, but still! Congratulations!
  7. I don't believe in astrology, but this did make me chuckle considering I'm presenting at a conference this weekend:
  8. Generally each department will have a DGS, a faculty member charged with administering their graduate program--including admissions. Their information is usually on the page about the department's graduate program, or can be found through the departmental faculty directory.
  9. Allow my congratulations to be as unambiguous as your post (temporarily) isn't: congrats!!!
  10. This, right there. If you're accepted, be kind to others. If you're rejected, be kind to others. ("Be kind to others, basically," he said, descending into his placid pool of platitudes.)
  11. You'll all not believe me because of my name (which is "bad advice, lack of counsel"), but: Less snark and more humility is pretty much always sound advice for anybody. (Edited just to add: I agree both with those who say that the post was pretty darn tone deaf and with those who say maybe this forum isn't the best place for hashing that out.)
  12. I've replied back to both of mine, just so they know it was received. But you're right: it's an awkward moment, because I really wanted them to know I got the email and was interested, but in both cases I was so excited I wasn't able to form a coherent thought beyond "bfdefwihufhbebdhkrg." They tend to have a section about how we should get in touch if we have questions, so I used that as a hook: I just wrote something simple about how thrilled I was to learn of the admission, and that I'd be sure to be in touch with any questions I had going forward.
  13. Ah, but you can still research/teach it! The prof at my university who regularly offers a class on rock/alternative lyrics as poetry (and knows a staggering number of musicians of big, big groups that she gets to Skype in to the class) is a 19th century Americanist!
  14. Congratulations to all the other admits from the day, and great, big, heartfelt thanks to all those who offered their congratulations! I'm waaaaaay out of up votes, but you all deserve all of them. Not only might we be in the same cohort, but in the same cohort focusing on the same super-small subspecialty! I can't get over that; I think it's wild that we could very well end up taking classes and working together for the next however-many years. tries not to look like a stalker
  15. Form--or at least formal; but it didn't feel impersonal, and I don't know if there are differences btw offers--email from DGS, with attached letter outlining funding support. For what it's worth, my website app status hasn't changed; it still just says submitted. I'm half afraid I'll get another email saying "Oh, a thousand apologies! We sent that too soon. Didn't mean you. Sorry!" Off to classes for the rest of the afternoon, because yes, I can totally focus on Old Norse right now.
  16. People say GC is toxic/bad/whatever place. They're very, very wrong.
  17. And I just accidentally down voted myself. Honestly, it's a good thing I'm not operating heavy machinery right now.
