I went to Vandy as an undergrad (I'm not from Tennessee, however). At Vanderbilt conservatives have a strong presence, but the Vanderbilt community is definitely liberal leaning. During the 2008 election, they had a big setup to watch the elections in the Commons cafeteria and people cheered whenever a state went blue. Nashville's county, Davidson, seems to be one of the few in Tennessee that votes Democratic, and it shows in the surrounding community. Outside of the city, the surrounding areas are more conservative, but people in Tennessee are so nice, you'll be fine.
  2. Scrolling around I didn't see enought stories like this: I'm driving my parents' old 2001 Honda Odyssey minivan. I was 10 years old when they first bought it. Around 2008 my father got tired of how dirty the hubcaps were getting, so he got rid of them. Last week I shuttled 5 of my friends to a restaurant in it, so all the seats get used sometimes! My impression of an airplane pilot got some laughs.
  3. My alma mater would take some of its own students if they really wanted to stay or had trouble finding other spots. People were generally encouraged to go other places to get a different interpretation of the field.
  4. He's good, but he is solidly in the "hands-off" side of the spectrum in managing his students. I like the freedom, even if it means I have to do stuff like this occasionally. There's another professor in our department who gives his students a detailed list of tasks at the beginning of every day. Thanks for the link!
  5. Hey everybody! I've been gearing up for my first conference this fall, and my adviser asked me to apply for a travel grant. For the application, the adviser is supposed to nominate the student and submit a letter of recommendation for the student. I sent him the stuff he needed (resume, presentation abstract), but in response he asked me to prepare a draft of the recommendation letter. Has anybody had to write a letter of recommendation for themselves before? What's the general structure of the letter and what do you talk about?
