  1. Just got off the waitlist at RISD and going.

    Pretty thrilled :)

    Yay! Congrats!

I see that you came down to the same decision as me... How did you decide RISD over SAIC?

I ended up choosing RISD over SAIC as well a week or so ago, but I wanted to see your take on it. My reasons were that RISD is much smaller, I prefer the artwork at RISD, and I got more money from RISD. I'm over the moon about starting this fall there. :) (for sculpture for me)

Also- I have a friend of a friend that is in your same group (RISD painting) and is coming in the same year as you.

Oh, and you should see if you can haggle your financial package at all and get some extra mullah!

  2. Congrats on being accepted to RISD!

Do you plan on attending or not? (I'm going! I've been accepted into RISD sculpture.)

I thought this thread could be used to discuss things like:

    - the curriculum

    - the school

    - the city of Providence

    - housing (what are the good places to live in Rhode Island?)

    - roommate situations

    - funding (tips to help people)

    - anything else RISD related

People could use this thread to exchange contact info and meet their future classmates. :) or, if you're still on the fence or have decided not to attend, you could say why here. I'm gonna guess funding lol

Hopefully I'm not posting this too late... It seems like gradcafe has slowed down a bit since it's nearing the end of this grad school decisions journey.

  3. Hi peoples!

If you are going to call a school and ask if there is any more funding available and talk about your other offers, who do you call?

    Admissions office?

    Financial aid office?

I feel like I call places and I'm put in touch with a secretary who has no real power to give me more money. I could talk to the head of the department, but I feel like I've already talked to them about how funding is important to me... This may be a dumb question lol I don't know.

  4. YALE

    period.

    Yea, Yale!!!

If RISD offered you a full ride, then maybe RISD, but RISD doesn't normally do stuff like that... So... Yale!! (But maybe wait and see what RISD says and try to play them off each other.)

  5. I think, based on what you're saying:

Boston is the one for you because you seem more interested in the place, faculty work , student work, and it's cheaper. I thinkkkk Boston is also known as a better art school??

Could you visit Syracuse? If a school really likes you, then sometimes they offer to pay for you to come down (that's been my experience).

Good luck :) hopefully someone else on here knows more about Syracuse than me

  6. Any other RISD sculpture people waiting to get an email about their financial aid information (to find out about awards and stuff) ?

It said in the email from Taylor Baldwin we were supposed to get an email from financial aid yesterday about it, but I haven't heard anything yet.... Anyone hear anything about that??

  7. Hooraypublic, I think it's just that I'm losing it a little, having to make this decision. And I really miss NY, or want to at least be in a lovely place. CMU education seems excellent, but fears of not liking Pittsburgh and living there for 3 years are arising. I will probably end up going anyway LOL. Money is an issue for me, and the other schools haven't offered anything to cheer about. I feel like if I'm going to pay a lot I'd want to come out mega-connected with a top ranked school on my resumé. What about you? You're in some great programs too. Are you thinking of attending CMU?

I live in Pittsburgh now!! It's the best! The art scene is really open (except in downtown pittsburgh). CMU is a really big deal in Pittsburgh, if you go there it kinda inspires awe in Pittsburgh and you'll be able to show everywhere. Maybe come visit!

Also, Cost of living here is cheap compared to other places.

CMU has a lot of opportunities to send their students abroad too over the summer if you don't like it. They really encourage you to do residencies and such over the summer.

Do you have any questions about Pittsburgh I could answer? (Don't mean to throw pittsburgh down your throat haha!)

  8. So I'm definitely assuming rejection from my new top choice, CMU. This leaves me w/ acceptances from MICA, SAIC Low-Res, and American U. This week I'll be doing some heavy research on visiting artists, professors and recent grads.

This is going to be a tough decision...Pick one of these schools, or wait again and apply next year???? MICA is ranked high these days, but I was only offered 1/3 funding. I want grad school NOW, but man. Maybe I need to wait. :(

I don't think you should assume rejection to Carnegie Mellon yet!! My interviewer told me we won't hear back till the last week of March. Carnegie Mellon goes on spring break around now so it takes them a while. Wait to see what your top choice says! Don't give up on them yet!!!

    Maybe call them?

  9. I know one super-mega talented amazing gal on here has received her funding offer from SAIC.

Was this about me?? Aw. Thanks gurl!!!

But yea, I got funding from the fiber department but I called SAIC sculpture and they already have given out their merit scholarships. If you didn't get a letter saying that you got a merit scholarship or an email, then I would guess that you didn't get one. But, you could call and ask like I did. It's awkward but whatever. The lady was really nice about it when I asked.

  10. What is the proper etiquette for letting a program know that you are not going to accept their offer? Phone call? Email? Has anyone done this so far? Did you give your reasons or just respectfully decline?

I think you should call. Calling them sucks and it would be easier to email, but yea, I think it is just the more respectful thing to do. Make sure to thank them and tell them how much you appreciate their offer....

    Just my opinion tho!

  11. I wondered the same thing too so I emailed and asked, they said they'll be letting everyone know if you're accepted, waitlisted, or admitted Wednesday morning! I really enjoyed the interview, I felt like the put me really at ease which was nice, so hoping for the best! How did yours go??

Also, do you know how people they're interviewing/ how many spots? He said, but I forget!

  12. Oh mine went well too! Taylor Baldwin seemed super interested in my work...but maybe that's just his personality to seem excited. I wasn't at ease though! I was so nervous the whole time, but I think I did well...

Oh good going asking them that! That's good to know and super decent of them to call everyone no matter what... I feel like people in the RISD department are nice people!

  13. Did you just receive the email saying they are delayed in letting us know?? This is killing me!

Yea!!! I'm freaking out too! I was getting sad about it before that email! At least they're giving us a very specific timetable now (Wednesday in the morning)..... I wonder if they're notifying everyone Wednesday morning? Most schools just notify accepted ppl and do rejections later for some reason. How did you think your interview went??

Also, someone asked about RISD painting, sorry dude I have no idea... You could do a search of this forum and past mfa freakout forums to get some info on that.

  14. I was accepted on Friday for UPenn's program during my Skype interview. Really love the sound of the program and everything my interviewer was telling me was amazing. I live and go to school in Glasgow though, and am still keeping my fingers crossed for a GSA acceptance. I love it here and would love to stay. Unfortunately, my interview didn't go particularly well. So I suppose if GSA sends me the rejection I'm expecting, I'll be Philly-bound!

Did all SAIC sculpture acceptances go out last week? should I write that one off as a rejection? I was interviewed, but haven't heard anything since.

Yea, I received my acceptance to the SAIC sculpture program on March 6, so I think they would have contacted you by now if you were accepted... Sorry.... But you have lots of other great stuff happening!

Anyone hear from RISD Sculpture yet today?? I was told (by my interviewer) they would be calling people today who were accepted.... Nervousness!

  15. Did anyone else apply for American U? The program is growing and DC is a cool place right now. Have no idea where I'm going. I was told Carnegie Mellon is deliberating on the 17th. Trying to wait it out til then.

Oh I heard that we won't hear back from carnegie mellon till the last week of march! That's what my interviewer said. But that would be nice to hear around the 17th!

  16. How much debt are you guys okay with accumulating for your art degree?

Louisiana state university offered me a free ride plus stipend and they said they need an answer this week. I visited and I didn't like it at all. But it's freeee. And the other schools that I got into are pretty expensive. I'm scared I'm going to look back on this and kick myself for not accepting lsu's offer. What do I do?!?! What are you guys doing?!?!

Don't go if you don't like it! You should feel like you deserve better than to go to a school that you don't like. But, use that offer to get more money for other schools you like more! Say, I would love to go to your school, but I got this offer from Louisiana state University which is really attractive from a financial viewpoint, can you match this offer or give me more money? Or something like that but better haha.... That's what I said to a school. You can do research online about how to approach a school for more money.

  17. Hello Leah. I believe that fibers is a different monster, as it might probably end up offering you a different, more stable kind of job. If the loan is payable in your case and you have your parents' support, I would still consider it. Specially if you want your practice to head that way. That's the big heavy reason (ok and maybe prestige) I see to stick with SAIC. In my current economic situation, I would not even dream about going into a 60k loan (my parents are more the kind that will probably ask me to lend them some cash).

A full ride at Penn is a great offer, it is pretty prestigious. But wait for RISD and CMU's proposals. I believe CMU offers excellent funding. Maybe not a full ride but enough for you to save more than half what you need to ask for SAIC . I am waiting for CMU as well, and in my case funding is a determinant factor.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!!! Yes, I was thinking with fibers there would be more career possibilities. I only applied to fibers at SAIC, but everywhere else I applied to sculpture. What's the more stable job that you're thinking of? I was imagining that if I can't get a professorship or while I wait to land a professor gig, maybe I could get involved with costume or theater with a fibers degree. I have been told by my professors that I could teach fibers or sculpture with a SAIC degree in fiber and material studies... As long as my portfolio contained sculptural techniques and with the prestige of SAIC.

I'm definitely waiting to see what all my schools say. I think I owe it to myself to see it through... I'm not kicking anyone to the curb yet. :) I'm trying to look at this thing from all angles and pick what is best for me. I'm thinking about what I can reasonably afford.

Good luck with carnegie mellon! Maybe we'll end up at the same program! :)
