  1. Sorry about all of the rejections today. I can't believe I got 2 in one day after having absolute silence for the longest time. On another note, I got my comps questions and readers today, and I really feel as though I have been set up for success. I'm super familiar with my readers (one is my advisor and I've had 4 courses with him, one was a letter writer for my PhD apps, and the other is a brilliant lady who taught my shakespeare grad seminar and really helped me refine my research interests). All of the questions are either directly related to my specialization or touch on areas that interest me. I was so worried that my questions would be boring, causing the whole process to be a million times worse. My bad news I got today is significantly overpowered by this good news!
  2. Rejected from BU. I knew that was coming since before I applied! It was a stretch considering my subject GRE score.
  3. Yikes, sounds like I dodged a bullet!
  4. I've actually only taken one class with her, and it was when I was on track to get my teaching credentials. She's one of the nicest ladies I've ever met, though. Feel free to message me if you'd like!
  5. Seriously! I was looking through the grad student handbook about a week ago to keep myself busy, and the program seems very difficult. Not that I wouldn't be grateful for that had I got in, but it just surprised me considering that I don't think of UCSD to be a top tier program, yet its structured like one.
  6. Same. I hadn't taken the SAT, ACT, or anything before I took the GRE and I think that really put me at a disadvantage.
  7. I've decided that if I get shut-out this year, I'm going to work at CCs and apply to maybe 4 or 5 programs each year until I get in. I'll retake both GREs, have stronger letters from second-year grad seminar instructors, and will be able to put out the writing sample I wanted to include with every application. I wrote a seminar thesis I am really proud of in my Shakeapeare class last semester that I wanted to use as my writing sample, but didn't get it finished until more than half of the applications were already turned in. I think that I will only be working will help as well. I was working 2 part-time jobs that equaled full time and taking 2 second year grad classes while doing my applications/GREs. I love keeping myself busy, but I do think I was too busy and it hurt my application. I can do this, it's just a matter of when.
  8. Congrats to the new admits!
  9. Rejected from ucsd. Not surprised, it wasn't a good fit. I applied there to appease my boyfriend. Also, who wants a 25 page minimum writing sample?!?! Ridiculous.
  10. Congrats on Syracuse! And there goes my hopes for admission in to one of my top choices. Only FOUR people?!?! What the crap? You are awesome for getting in!
  11. No no no! You've got this! Even if you don't get in, you're still a wonderful person and are deserving of happiness.
  12. I've been keeping up with the extreme cold weather on the east coast in an attempt to convince myself that I actually don't want to live in an area where ice sheets fall off skyscrapers to convince myself that I'm not that sad that I probably won't be getting in to a program in the Boston area or in New York. It's working. Excuse my syntax. I've had some wine
  13. Congrats on your admit! Hopefully that means I'll hear from U Delaware soon.
  14. I got an email to check the website. It took me by surprise considering how late in the evening the email came, especially because I was notified on a Sunday. Clearly there isn't any rhyme or reason to their notifications. Good luck though! I hope you get in!
  15. Seriously! I wore a tank top to the beach yesterday. In February. Think about how terrible it would be to have to stay inside and wear a parka and three pairs of socks at all times.
  16. Congrats to the new admits!! We definitely have some smart people on this board, don't we?
  17. I wouldn't give up hope yet. I received my rejection from Tufts about a week ago and I've noticed that acceptances from the program have been posted since then. As others have said, it ain't over till its over! On another note, I was rejected from UMass Amherst yesterday. I'm a little bent up about it because it was a program where I thought I could realistically have a shot at an acceptance. Oh well!
  18. This weekend is my anniversary so I'm actually hoping that I don't hear anything until next week so I don't feel all down on such a special day.
  19. Congrats! I think that's something to definitely be excited about!
  20. The entire What You Don't See album by The Story So Far. Its always relevant to my life in one way or another. The first song is titled Things I Can't Change. I think that's pretty self-explanatory for right now. Other than that, I listen to Yo-Yo Ma's unaccompanied cello suites when I'm reading and writing.
  21. Congrats on the new acceptances!
  22. You guys are killing me with your responses to my news! Lol thanks for the laughs On another note, I got an email from SUNY Binghampton saying that their website will be going down for maintenance and will be extending their deadline until the 18th so if anyone wants to submit a last minute application, do it! They do require applicants to have a MA, though.
  23. Thanks for all the positivity! ETA: the worst news that came out of my doctor's mouth was that I have to start really limiting my alcohol intake. I don't drink that much anyway, but I just wanted to shake him and be like, "I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF PHD ADMISSION DECISION SEASON. ALCOHOL IS NECESSARY."
  24. Yeah mine was pretty generic. "Unfortunately we had a bunch of applicants and were unable to accept you..." Nothing specific. And thanks for the well wishes!
  25. Just because I posted something earlier: it's not quite cancer so I get to keep all of my body parts for now! Bring on the acceptances!
