  1. going with Stanford !!!

  2. Hi all, Has anyone here experienced the qual exams in Stanford EE? I am wondering what it looks like, and how competitive is this exam? Is it only the grade received that affects the result, if someone has publications for instance, does it help to pass? Any experience shared is appreciated.
  3. Hi all, I am admitted to Materials Science and Engineering PhD program in MIT and EE program in Stanford (1 year fellowship). I cannot really decide between these two schools? Is there a difference between the reputations of these schools? After all, MIT is MIT, but there are very attractive research projects going on in Stanford as well, but there comes the qual examination concern. Also, my background is Electrical Engineering, so would it be difficult studying in MSE program in MIT? I appreciate any help and advice about my decision.
  4. Hi all, As you may know, recently there was a nuclear reactor accident in Japan. While being very happy to be admitted to Stanford, I started to have some concerns about California after this event. Do you think this should be taken into account while deciding the graduate school? There are numerous schools in california, would we expect a decrease in the rate students accept offers from these schools?
  5. It is 1 year departmental fellowship: tuition + stipend + insurance
  6. As far as I know UMich is best in VLSI among these schools.
  7. Do you think the qual exam in Stanford is sth I have to consider while making a decision?
  8. Thanks for the reply. My another question is, are those with 1 year fellowship always funded for the rest of PhD in Stanford (at least according to the statistics)?
  9. Hi all, I have been admitted to MIT- Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Stanford-EE with departmental (3 quarter) fellowship. My undergrad major is EE, so I am not sure if choosing Materials Science and Eng. would be a good idea; but some professors have research areas strongly aligned with mine, and MIT is MIT. On the other hand, I am awarded fellowship from Stanford and there are numerous professors I can work with. I appreciate any advice about the decision I have to make.
  10. May area is Photonics: Graduating from top university in Turkey GPA: 3.94 /4.00 1 journal pub in a nonfamous journal, 1 submitted to a very high impact journal 2 accepted conference Did a summer research at MIT GRE: 800q, 380v, 4.0 a.w. TOEFL: 105 /120
  11. There is nothing to worry about right now, 20 hours ago my friend received admission with SGF, and I just received admission with departmental felllowship (3 quarters) a couple of hours ago. They are still sending out acceptences with financial support.
  12. The form of financial aid is not yet clear I think, but dont worry, MIT never leaves its grads broke My stats: 1 published article (not a famous journal) 1 submitted article (a good one) 2 conference papers Bilkent University Major: Electrical Engineering GPA: 3.94/4.00 GRE: V:380/Q:800/AW:4.0 IELTS is waived as language of instruction is English in my college.
  13. waiting for admissions, painful...

  14. I have not considered other universities, but MIT I think is engineering oriented. A number of professors deal with device design and process engineering, and there are numerous companies founded by the professors in MIT.
  15. My friend had received the acceptence letter last year at mid-feb, so I was surprised to get the letter on mid jan. this year, as well. Thank you for the answer, MSE in MIT looks suitable to my research interests and looks like a good choice for my graduate study, though I think I will wait for some of EE departments' decisions.
  16. Hi all, I applied for PhD program to several top schools (about 10) in Electrical Engineering including MIT; and I also applied Materials Science and Engineering Program in MIT, as well. I recently got an admission email from MIT DMSE, but now I am confused as I believe I will be admitted by at least a few top EE programs (though no results from EE programs are announced yet), hopefully from MIT again(who knows ). My BS is in Electrical Engineering and my interests strongly overlap with research of some profs in DMSE-MIT; as well as EE programs. Do you think PhD in DMSE program in MIT would bring as many opportunities as EE programs in top schools provide? And do you think it is a good idea to pursue a PhD in another department? Also, is there a chance to be admitted to EECS in MIT for me; or does my admision to DMSE have negative consequences on that?
