  1. I officially declined my offer to Laurier today, good luck to those on the wait list!

    Hi mijj_wa,

I was really set on Carleton originally, and since I was waitlisted at Carleton but accepted to Laurier, I will be attending Laurier. I'm curious to know why you chose Carleton over Laurier. I haven't been able to find a lot of information to compare the two besides the fact that Laurier has 3 placements, in comparison with Carleton who has two. Are there any specific reasons why you chose Carleton over Laurier? Personally, it was more for the location that I wanted Carleton. I'm just curious :)

  2. I second this information! Knowing the format and if having a part-time job is possible, would be great.

Ellogartz - I found an outline online.

Fall: 5 core courses (all theory)

    Winter: Practicums with 2 courses

    Spring/Summer: Practicum with 2 courses

    Fall: Practicum with 1 course
Winter: 2 electives and 2 core courses

Is there anyone following this forum that can give me some information on what Laurier's two year MSW program is like? Also this may sound silly but are there exams? I vaguely remember someone mentioning there was not...

  3. AMetallo - For unpaid work I volunteered at a sexual assault centre for 3 years where I had different positions and took on different projects. I also volunteered for 3 organizations that dealt with empowering/gender identities and sexualities/advocacy work. I was also on a communications team for a feminist magazine. For paid work, I've been working at Citizenship and Immigration Canada for almost two years. I had a summer paid internship at the Office for Students with Disabilities, and the previous year I worked as a camp counsellor through the YMCA.

I think that about sums it for me, I hope this helps. Also if you have any further questions about work experience/personal statement, please feel free to PM me. I am definitely not an expert but I can try to help :)

Definitly have an amazing application than! What places have you worked if you don't mind me asking

  4. AMetallo,

I applied with a 3.68 - 3.72 (in that range) out of 4.0, and I have 3609 hours of mixed paid and unpaid work. So I definitely fit closer to the 3500 range.

Everyone who got into Laurier can I ask a question?? Roughly how many hours of experience in the social services field do you have?? I heard Laurier puts a lot of emphasis on that. I only have about 1000-1200 hours of experience and they say the competitive range is about 3500. I just wanted to know roughly what people have who did get accepted and if it is closer to 3500??

    Thanks in advance:)

  5. I was accepted to Laurier (2year) and mine only changed after I received the email. Once in the acceptance email you get all the necessary information to log-in as well as your new email/password etc. So personally, I wouldn't think too much about LORIS because it doesn't tell you anything (unfortunately).

    Hey mish2,

My LORIS hasn't changed at all. It looks the same since I applied. Is it supposed to change? I assumed it only changed after you were notified through email that you got in.

    Hey kjamieso4,

Mine has not changed either but I think I read in earlier posts (when advanced standings were hearing back) that some may have changed before they received an email.  I would also assume that it would not change before email notification and hoping that it only changes when you hear through email.  Small glimmer of hope still, lol

Anyone who has not heard back from Laurier yet, has your LORIS changed where the references are?

  6. Hey :)

I created a Facebook group where anyone can ask questions about Canadian MSW programs. This forum can sometimes get really lengthy and confusing so I thought it would be a good idea. Of course, please don't feel obligated to be part of it. This might not work but I thought it would be worth a try :).  https://www.facebook.com/groups/346187155575824/

Edit: if the link doesn't work, type Canadian MSW Programs

  7. Hi horizonmind,

I don't really know anything McGill's QY, but I'm currently finish my undergrad at McGill. So if you have any general questions about McGill or Montreal, feel free to PM me :)

Hello, I am posting here for the first time this year. I am just wondering if anyone knows deeply about Pros and Cons of Mcgill qualifying year program vs. U of T 2 years program?? Currently, I am gearing toward going into U of T, but just can't be decisive in the movement. I just thought some pros on top of my head, if anyone knows other crucial pros and cons, let me know! Thank you so much :)

Mcgill: cheaper tuition/living allowance, really small size of class (35), slightly higher prestige of the school,

U of T: a variety of placement opportunities (due to the language), the social aspect (friends, entertainment), its future prospect

  8. Ahhhh I don't know, I'm just still so excited! I can't stop dancing everywhere, haha. Um... as of right now I accepted Laurier and I'm going to Laurier but if Carleton comes to me with an offer I'll have to assess the situation then. I really don't know what I would do. Carleton was my first choice  because it's not far from Montreal and my partner's family. Also, my partner and I wouldn't mind establishing ourselves in Ottawa so in terms of the future it would be perfect, but on the other hand I'm assuming Waterloo might have cheaper living expenses etc (which I'm not sure of) so it honestly depends on finances, our future plans, future work opportunities, so many things. I really don't know. We would have to sit down and write our pros and cons list and seriously consider both options. As of right now however, I'm choosing to believe that I am attending Laurier :)

    ahhh purplegrey CONGRATS!!!
Like Lean_N I also feel like I was rooting for you, after reading all your comments, lol!

Do you think you'll go to Laurier or hold out to get off the Carleton waitlist/into U of T?

Congrats again to everyone who has been receiving acceptances!! It wasn't so long ago that it felt like they would never come! If you're still waiting, I really do think that no news is still good news at this point.
