I completely feel for you. BUT, there are ways that things can be positive. Please do not give up hope on yourself. I know many who have gotten into lower tier schools (maybe 60's or 70's or 80's) with a low GRE/low GPA for masters and have gotten into stronger schools for Phd. That said: First, a masters is easier to get into with a lower GRE score. So have hope! I suggest working on getting strong letters of recommendation, your GPA seems good, write a solid statement of purpose. If your GRE is weak, then that doesn't mean that your other application parts can't be. Work on making the other parts as strong as you can and I believe you may have a good chance at getting into decent programs. Also, if you can explain about your ADD into your purpose statement, it would clear any doubts or obstacles for the admissions committee. You have a strong excuse of why you may not have scored high on the GRE. I do believe there are decent programs (probably not top tier but decent programs) that would accept a strong application with a weak spot.

Lady L, I think it's probably a case of misunderstanding- they might have thought that he'd sit in the interviews. I'd shoot an email just to be clear. But it is a red flag when a prospective cohort member sends you an email talking about "inside gossip" in the department. My feeling is: stay away!

Lady L, I agree that a partner should have a great deal of say in your decision. But one thing I'm not clear on: Would your partner be attending informational sessions with you? Or the interview? The way this university has written the email, it seems that they think that your partner will be in all those events. And is this a Phd or Masters program?

Congratulations ghanablackstar8! It'd be much appreciated if you could let us know a little more about admission specifics- where you notified via email or phone? Did they say anything about the cohort size? Did you go for an interview? Do let us know!

I haven't heard anything either but one of my advisors told me that since others have gotten a reply about acceptances, it probably means I am (we're) on a waiting list. My status on the application status hasn't changed, no email from anyone in the dept and no mail either. However, if the Open House is the first week of March, it could mean that we might hear something right before or right after then. Any contributions, 2 cents, welcome.

I know that the department had told me back in January that they had over a 100 applicants and that we should hear back by end of January because the adcoms were meeting every week (15 applications per session). If I hear anything, I'll let you know, ineedcaffeine. captiv8ted, let us know if you hear anything for sure. I'm still wondering how one of the posters on this thread found out about acceptances being sent out yesterday.
-
Depths of despair, did you find out through the department? Also, should I call the department secretary and ask if they had sent out emails yesterday? I received an email from the secretary on Monday informing me that my application was complete for review. Then, I had written to her about decisions of the adcoms and she'd replied stating that I'd have an answer by the end of the month. Not sure about all this.

Anyone heard anything yet? I just saw a fully funded admit on the results search page. So Congratulations to whoever it is!!!

The most funniest/scariest/disturbing one was the rant against Duke. It was pretty graphic. I chuckled, then I grimaced, then I chuckled again, feeling disturbed the whole time. Also, it's quite annoying when people put up bogus results. There's people panicking here desperately looking for their schools and some person decided it's funny to write down that they received phone calls 2 weeks after the deadline. I mean, really?!

Thanks, you too! Do you know how big the cohort size is per year in Boston College? Also, anyone been to the campus/department? How is it? Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Someone I know just got into UI-C Sociology. They received an email apparently. Anyone else heard anything?
-
Oh, I'm glad I was not the only one surprised. I didn't think any news had gone out either. My area of interest is gender, sexuality, race and culture. For my specific focus, I wanted to work with Dr. C Shawn McGuffey- he's got fascinating research interests. What about you?

Hello folks, Wondering if anyone else had applied to Boston College. Saw in the results search that someone had received a phone call about being waitlisted. So does this mean that the acceptance notices are already out? I haven't heard anything from them at all and my agora portal status has not changed. Do let us know!
-
Please let me know if you get that email too. It really makes no sense!! What's more frustrating is that my application status hasn't budged in a negative or positive way. More waiting. Aargh!
-
No clue what is going on. I had the same reaction that you had about maybe her accidentally sending me the wrong email. Hopefully, it's not a rejection! I also am considered an international applicant so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. Though I sent everything in and my application was complete ages and ages ago. I even checked online in the application status. Maybe you'll get it later today or tomorrow. If not, then, I'm going to start to worry!

I emailed the grad secretary and she said that we should hear back about decisions by the end of this month. So strange. What on earth? Why are they sending the same email again? She had told me that we should have heard of decisions by end of january. Now, she sends another email and states that they're going to give me a decision by the end of this month. I'm so confused AND exasperated. How long do I have to wait? Geeeeez. Did you receive the same email?
-
I just received an email from the secretary stating that my application was complete. I thought that I received that email a long time ago! Weird. Did you receive the same email?
-
Yes, I contacted a few. I did a campus visit and met some faculty also. Also, talked to a Phd grad student. I really liked the department. Seems very tightly knit and every person being funded for four years doesn't hurt either! I don't know how big the size of the cohort is each year. I didn't realize there was a visitation week. Do you know when it is? The wait is excruciating. Had to add this in: If you hear anything at all, let us know!!
-
I've checked the applications status and it's same "pending...under manual review" for three weeks now. I am going to hold on to hope that silence is a good thing. I'm glad there's other applicants here. Did you talk to anyone in the department or do a campus visit?
-
Congratulations to you guys! This is great!

Hello all, Wondering if anyone's heard a peep from UIC yet? Last year, people heard back on February 5 according to the results search. Anyone heard anything at all? Phone call? Interview? Letter? Email? Zilch from this side.

There's a superstition from (Asian country) that says that you'll get the opposite of what you see in your dreams. I also had a similar nightmare and I use this superstition for consolation.

What you think the adcoms are saying about your application
DeWinter replied to DeWinter's topic in Waiting it Out
I wish GPS models were used as an assessment by adcoms! I'd be in great shape! -
I agree with you all that professors need to be upfront about these kinds of things. BUT when you are just starting out in your masters and the talk comes around to Phd applications, your grad chair tells everyone to not apply to the top programs because "she doesn't want to assume anything". It just sounded painfully negative.

Congratulations Astronautka!!! As well as all the others who got in at these super awesome schools!!
