  1. For the sake of next year's applicants: Call for applications published: May 19, 2014 National deadline for applications: June 24th Awards announced: Sept 17-18. Accept/decline by: Sept 23
  2. Also heard from my campus rep on 9/18. Though unlike As72, I did not receive the technical review yet.
  3. As you probably know, programs like the Mellon/ACLS diss. completion fellowship allow for both writing-up and research in the final year. I think they would see you as fitting into that category of grant. The awardees I know from CLIR and IDRF were conducting their primary field research. Their websites also rule it out: CLIR: "Who is not eligible to apply? -- Those who will be significantly engaged in writing their dissertations during the fellowship tenure. This is a research fellowship. Students may apply even if they have started dissertation research or done some writing, but CLIR's awards may be used only for original source research that applicants still need to do. Awards will not be granted to applicants who request support for intermittent research trips combined with the writing of their dissertations." IDRF: "Please note that the IDRF program supports research only and may not be used for dissertation write-up. ... Fellowships provide support for nine to twelve months of on-site, site-specific dissertation research. ... In addition, the IDRF program will not support dissertation write-up either at the home institution or elsewhere"
  4. Results should be out anytime from now through the next couple weeks.
  5. Do we need to provide receipts for all costs? And, if you are able to get your university to defer dissertator tuition, can you retain that money from your budget to use elsewhere during the fellowship?
  6. Hawa, you were right. Its active: https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2013/05/02/2013-10418/applications-for-new-awards-fulbright-hays-doctoral-dissertation-research-abroad-ddra-fellowship
  7. Yeah, if whoever screwed up the sheet could not try and format it, that'd be helpful. And if you make an accidental error, remember to just hit command/control and Z at the same time to undo it. I've got it somewhat back to normal, but there may be scholarship and fellowship people mixed up together. If you're in the wrong section, just post a note in the 'correction column' at the bottom of the sheet and I'll move it.
  8. Me too! Dates email meant nothing!
  9. Not sure if that meant they were confirming one week wait (circa 4/29-4/30) or imply it may be sooner. https://twitter.com/BorenAwards/status/326706461235372032
  10. Queenskid, that info is listed on the spreadsheet.
  11. Okay, the spreadsheet is now divided into two different sections, one for fellowships and one for scholarships.
  12. Nah, given that the response was specifying that the notification was via email and then mail, I'm guessing if anyone asked, it was non-forum people asking in what form the notifications come. And all of us already know that it's email. I'd be surprised if anyone there followed this--it would be an incredibly boring conversation for someone who already knows what's going on and when decisions are being made, it's only interesting to us because we're in limbo.
  13. Last year, for a smaller country, I know that two people turned down a spot due to professional and personal reasons. So someone ended up with the grant that was 2nd on the alternate list. They didn't find out until September, but hey, they got it.
  14. That, and Indonesia found out 55 days ago.
  15. It ain't over til the fat lady sings. Granted, we can see her in the wings getting ready. Although, the protocol changed so no one knows anything for sure. Apeafrica didn't get the email, but she has to have made the cut. No other explanation for them contacting her. Then again, maybe they didn't send her the dates email because they knew they would have to contact her to reorganize the language program. Also, a colleague of mine applied--who just got another competitive fellowship--and I figured that they would at least get alternate status given their strong background and project. Nope, no email either. But, hey, 80% get rejected, so it's not hard to figure out. And agreed that there's nothing worse than people being over-confident on your behalf with any information. Unless you're on the selection committee, don't tell me what my chances are. There's also a bit of a comedic value to the fact that out of all the people on here, you and I are the only ones that haven't gotten an email. Oddly takes the sting out of it a bit.
  16. That sounds like an unofficial but basically official acceptance? Congratulations!
  17. It varies by country. Some countries only have two mandatory in-country programs, meaning you must arrive during one of those times. Others just have a six month block of time. Find your region and the country here, then select either ETA or Full Grant: http://us.fulbrightonline.org/countries/selectedregion/20
  18. I didn't get the email, so I meant if it turns out that I'm already rejected, then clearly the letters weren't a big help.
  19. I included my letter of affiliation, but I already had it in hand for Fulbright. We'll see how this whole dates email thing turns out, because if that was a cut-off, then clearly the letter wasn't a big help.
  20. It's obviously not a bad sign for those that received it. But, we won't really know if it was a definitive good or bad sign until they announce awards and we can see a correlation. So, everyone fill out the spreadsheet and we'll be able to figure it out in two weeks! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak8VXdo5DCQmdHBKamV4b0NPa3hBRUJqRkxlZGdpRGc#gid=0
  21. The State Dept (Fulbright) and the NSEP (Boren) are bureaucracies that disburse funds and select applicants, so those funds can be reduced/eliminated for the overall program. The IIE is not a government bureaucracy and administers many other things besides Boren. It's entirely separate and its staffing levels would not have been affected. The program changed because NSEP/IIE made some decision to alter how they did the selections. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak8VXdo5DCQmdHBKamV4b0NPa3hBRUJqRkxlZGdpRGc#gid=0
  22. That theory doesn't work. The Institute for International Education--a non-profit, independent org that also handles certain Fulbright awards--administers Boren on behalf of the National Security Education Program. JustChill has pointed out one of the many inconsistencies in the "dates email is the new budget email" theory. There are others. We're all reasonably smart, so if there was a pattern at work here I think we'd all be able to see pretty clearly. Right now we're just reading tea leaves. Since clearly the protocol has changed, how about we fill out this googledoc? Come notifications, we'll be able to see if any pattern emerged and applicants next year can know what to expect. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak8VXdo5DCQmdHBKamV4b0NPa3hBRUJqRkxlZGdpRGc#gid=0
  23. Re Spain notifying on Sunday last year: the Google spreadsheet says it notified on the 16th, a Monday. I don't think they notify on the weekends (unless you count past years where it was by mail and arrived on Saturday.)
  24. The other thing is that Apeafrica didn't get a date email, but then later got an email asking her to find an alternate in-country language program. It wouldn't make sense that she was eliminated, but Boren would go out of their way to ask for an updated plan. That doesn't fit.
