DOE sent this out today: We still await final decisions on the FY 2013 budget. At this point, the Department has adopted a policy to hold the continuations harmless with regard to any reductions caused by the sequester. This means that, even if we don’t have enough to fully fund OPE/IFLE continuations, we must use all the money we have to fund them as fully as possible. For OPE/ IFLE, holding the continuations harmless results in OPE/IFLE not being able to conduct any new competitions for Title VI programs (i.e., at this point, we will not be able to run the UISFL [undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language] competition). The Fulbright-Hays programs -- Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad and Group Projects Abroad-short term -- will compete in FY 2013. So it is safe from sequestration for this year at least.

Just an idea, but maybe creating another Fulbright thread would be a good idea. This one can remain an analysis/speculation/conversation/commiseration, etc discussion thread. Then there would be a results thread (sort of how Grad Cafe has a results list for grad school admits and rejections) where people just post their country, time of notification, and program when they get notified. People could quickly check results and then come to this thread to discuss. (Or have email alerts for it so they know results are coming in) Something like "Fulbright 2013-2014 RESULTS." It would also make it easier for the kind soul that is compiling the spreadsheet or for future applicants to skim.

The Fulbright Scholar awards went out for my country a week ago, but they definitely didn't announce any ETAs or Full Grant Fulbrights. (They usually don't until late March, early April) So I wouldn't be worried if I were you.

It's a fairly safe assessment that the DPRK won't reignite the war unless it perceives an existential threat. China has benefited more than any other nation from the status quo over the past two decades. Don't forget that Sung had Mao and Stalin's blessing in 1950. That's not happening today. There's no threat to Fulbright. The DPRK doesn't even have the capability to put its warheads on missiles--and you remember how well that recent satellite launch went (which was practice for when they can put a nuclear warhead, not a satellite, on a missile.)

From another site: "FYI for future applicants - when they send out offers a few weeks ahead of rejections they ask recipients to keep their offer confidential until the formal announcement is made. They also ask that offers be accepted or rejected within just a week or so, which leads me to think that they leave themselves time to make offers to alternates before sending out any rejection emails." In 2011 notifications went out on Friday, March 4th, and in 2012 on Monday, March 12th. Perhaps they'll go out either tomorrow, the 4th, the 8th, or the 11th. http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Dissertation_Fellowships_2012-13

These are details that should be clarified in your research plan/statement of purpose and application ...

That's right: Fulbright 2012-2013 Spreadsheet The earliest acceptance was March 5th, for Belgium. Which means I'm skeptical about this announcement, since last week's hint that decisions were coming out earlier appeared to be a false alarm. But, hopefully I'm wrong and they are coming out now. EDIT: Congratulations Kltree. Glad I turned out to be wrong, even before hitting "submit".

Early April is my memory.

My advisor said the process is proceeding normally, in the same manner as last year. The aforementioned national email said: "In the coming weeks, Fulbright U.S. Student selection decisions will start coming in from the host countries. Because Fulbright requires additional review and approval of selected panels by the Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, applicant notification will begin in early March and continue through April and May. The first notification of selection, alternate or non-selection status will be issued by IIE in an email to the students. As was the case last year, we will copy the FPA on the email so that you will know the decision at the same time the student does. Good luck to your students and many thanks for your support of the Fulbright Program."

The DOE has set a tentative national deadline for May 1st. If that holds, we can expect the DOE to announce the new competition on/around March 1st. http://www2.ed.gov/fund/grant/find/edlite-forecast.html#chart6

As expected, the thin, white envelope showed up today.

Based on last year's forum, transcript requests (meaning you've made it to the second round) will be sent out via email either at the end of this week (Thursday-Friday) or next week. Then rejections are sent out through USPS.

I had the same situation a little while back. In my experience, no they will absolutely not care that it is the same as your SOP. They know that you are just applying and perhaps have never even heard of FLAS until they requested you apply for it. The thing that I wish I knew was this: if your SOP and the interests that you listed in there are multi-regional, then I would re-craft the SOP to focus on the area/region that aligns with your FLAS application. For instance, if you're applying to work with Professor X to study relations between the U.S. and Japan, make sure the essay that you hand in to the area studies center/FLAS committee is focused heavily on Japan. They are not going to care about the U.S. stuff, or any other country outside of East Asia. Unlike applying to your professor, this application is not solely about your exciting ideas and potential projects, but rather about your exciting project and specifically how this language and study of that area is vitally important to your studies. My advisor wasn't on the FLAS committee and I had the problem of the FLAS committee labeling me not a specialist in their region because my project was multi-regional. So, delete any material that is overly specific about your discipline (so if you admire anthropologist Y, and they don't work in that area, it's not worth mentioning) or other regions. And make sure to replace it with region specific information.

Do not waste the money on a flight. If you can drive to a school in under a couple hours, then sure, go ahead and try and meet. Last year the only school I got into was the one that I didn't visit. (would've meant a plane ride or 11 hour drive) I had very good discussions with several professors, but the thing that counted most for me was that I had a worked as a research assistant (and got a LOR) for a professor that had just begun working with my target advisor. In the end, it was this connection that mattered.

If your advisor is a "super-star" or even a "star" then what kind of place are you applying to that no one would know of their work or reputation. I'm no expert on acting, and I only go to the movies a couple times a year, but I still know who Forest Whitaker is...see what I'm saying? As mentioned before, if they are renowned, someone on the hiring committee will know of them. When you leave graduate school, you will be known more as a student of Professor X, than a student from Harvard.

Has anyone else applied for FLAS at Wisconsin? Any idea when they will make decisions? Thanks.
-
If anyone else is in RSEA limbo, as I was, I called the department. All offers have been sent out already out via email.

I was wondering if people knew anything about Cornell's History Department. Since there was one person accepted (no field given) and then one person wait-listed in Asian history I was thinking each subfield may be getting done separately. I'm bracing for a rejection letter based on last year's time frame on the results page, but it seems peculiar that there is only one acceptance listed. Thanks.
-
Well, finally confirmed I am on the no list. For what it is worth, they said that they wait to inform everyone who didn't get a fellowship, because they could have someone turn one down and then reassign the award.
-
I see that there was one rejection (i feel your pain) and one acceptance today for RSEA. If anyone is willing to answer, were you notified by a professor with whom you had previous contact, the Director, or someone else? Basically, were these generic emails or personal? If you have any other info, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

UT-Austin results are up on the website.

From what I heard, Wisconsin fellowship announcements will likely be out next week.

You and me both, Insideout. I put in my application that if I was rejected from the PhD, I would like to be considered for the MA. Maybe I was reverted to the MA list and have to wait until they send those out, which is done on a rolling basis through April 30th according to their website. Is it possible this could be the same for you?
