  1. I mentioned this on the previous page, but Boren directly told my friend that they had only contacted people if information was unclear or missing from their application. I find it hard to believe they would lie. There hasn't been a budget email yet. People had mentioned being asked to provide information like their home institution tuition for the fellowship period. This was information that I know I put into my budget, so that would make sense that I didn't receive an email.
  2. How many fellowships are awarded?
  3. A friend who is also applying for Boren--and like me didn't receive last week's email--called their offices today. Boren told him: "Any communication thus far has been because people did not complete their applications correctly or clearly. Announcements should be made by month's end."
  4. It's not supposed to be used for language study. Perhaps if it is an obscure language that could only be learned in the location where you are conducting research, but otherwise no. If you can get alternate funding to do that though, then it would help to mention it in the application.
  5. Djevojka, thanks for your thoughts. I suppose the fact that they didn't combine them into one email is odd. I was just assuming that the software they used had an automated feature to send emails inquiring about dates. The only possible thing I can imagine is that they were contacting people with closer departure dates. Above, Qaiswalayla says she is leaving Sept. 1st. My departure date is 4 months later. For those who got the email, is your departure date closer, say in the June-September range?
  6. I'm right there with you on Vietnam. I mean even Laos reported last week. It's beginning to seem like all of Southeast Asia has reported. I talked to the Fulbright staff in Hanoi and they said they were forwarding my email to the IIE. Maybe that means they already sent in the results?
  7. I think they mean Student Fulbright vs. Fulbright-Hays. For those of you accepted, are you more productive now? Or am I just deluding myself into thinking that I'll be more productive once I hear?
  8. Based on the evasive and brusque response I got from Boren, it seems clear that this was a cut-off: everyone will be contacted in May, all applications still being considered, if you didn't receive an email it's because we don't have any questions for you. Still don't understand the reason for deceptive language, as if using the phrase "all applicants" would fool you guys that this wasn't some cut-off. At least SSRC is forthright and informs people that they didn't make it past the first round, instead of stringing them along for another two months.
  9. So, does Boren promptly send out rejections to the people that they did not send a request to? Or do they wait until May/June when they send out acceptances and alternates? Also, would it really kill these awards to be upfront? These coy ways of rejecting and accepting people are getting old.
  10. Well, maybe there is a delay as they send them out. But I haven't received an email. So perhaps this is a cut-off email...
  11. I can't comment on the Fulbright IIE. However, when I applied for the Fulbright-Hays we had to have a medical clearance in the application. This was the requirement: 24. Certification List date of physical. Enter the name of the physician or certified nurse practitioner who can testify that the candidate named in this application is physically and psychologically able to carry out all phases of the project as described in this proposal. So basically, it just required a doctor's note saying that you were healthy enough to complete your project. For me that meant sitting and reading documents. The standard would obviously be different for a biologist that's applying to study monkeys in central Borneo. If this fictional biologist had some condition that required them to be near a comprehensive pharmacy or hospital... well then that would probably disqualify them. So, it wasn't a strict military-esque list of conditions that disqualify you, just that your doctor felt you could complete the project.
  12. Just got the Boren survey email. Fooled me, thought it was the budget update.
  13. It was supposed to be announced March 1st. But naturally that did not happen. The first place it will be announced is here: https://www.federalregister.gov/agencies/education-department As you can see, nothing yet.
  14. So, initially it seemed like the emails were only for blanks or obvious errors in applications, but Paperhead and Postidentity's posts make it seem like they might have gotten the actual financial update form already. Can you guys elaborate? Thanks.
  15. Had no idea about the budget email kiss of death, so thanks for posting this. Just curious, what type of info did they request you correct and how did they know it was incorrect?
  16. Nothing. I assume that means we're out of it.

  18. The most recent competition was held last year in May-June. Those awardees are required, at the absolute latest, to begin their projects by the end of this month, March 2013. They then have to complete their research within 12 months (by the end of March 2014). So, even though they were technically the 2012-1013 awards, because the DOE issued it so late, the award period goes into 2014.

  20. Sorry for muddling that explanation. The other thread is for results only (basically a more accessible, realtime resource than the Google Doc). This remains the discussion/question thread.
  21. This is the Fulbright notifications only thread. Please post the following pieces of information (you don't have to post all of them if you prefer not to). -Country -Notification (Accepted, Alternate, Rejected) -Program (ETA/Research) -Sender (IIE or Fulbright Board, etc) ...and perhaps -Email Arrival Time -Email Subject If you have questions or comments, please post them to the Fulbright 2013-2014 thread. This is just an easier way to abstract information in realtime, since the Google Doc is more difficult to access/use and is updated less frequently.
  22. Okay, from the time the poll opened, it's been 2/3 in favor of a separate thread and 1/3 against it. About 50 people voted, so that seems like a representative sample. So I'm gong to go ahead and make it in time for today's notifications (hopefully there are some for UKers at least). To go off an earlier question, this thread will be for results only. If people have questions and, they should come to this one. And of course you can post your notification in both threads.
  23. I guess it's hidden until closed. If enough people vote by this afternoon, and its a super majority in favor, then I'll post it in time hopefully for results. Also, not directed at anyone in particular, but keep in mind we all have different preferences. So just as it's rather absurd for people to complain that others are chatting in a discussion forum, it's also absurd to tell people they must read, or at the very least skim, a free-flowing discussion when they just want to check results (after all, most grad cafe threads are just updates, questions, and notifications related to awards). And people do have some expectation to that, given the thread is titled "Fulbright 2013-2014." This seems to give everyone what they want.
  24. If you haven't voted yet in the poll, and want to, here's the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N7C8FZM Actually, with 30 votes in right now, it's 2:1 in favor of a results only thread that would complement this one. The idea as outlined yesterday: "Just an idea, but maybe creating another Fulbright thread would be a good idea. This one can remain an analysis/speculation/conversation/commiseration, etc discussion thread. Then there would be a results thread (sort of how Grad Cafe has a results list for grad school admits and rejections) where people just post their country, time of notification, and program when they get notified. People could quickly check results and then come to this thread to discuss. (Or have email alerts for it so they know results are coming in) Something like 'Fulbright 2013-2014 RESULTS.' It would also make it easier for the kind soul that is compiling the spreadsheet or for future applicants to skim."
  25. Okay, that's why I wanted to see what other people thought. For me, the spreadsheet is more of an archival source to check, but not necessarily the easiest thing to navigate for quick results, since you need to scan down every column, as opposed to just quickly dropping into this site for realtime results. And it's not easy to check via phone. But if people are happy with this system that's fine too.
