  1. Thank you! Both PhD, and I contacted them a couple of weeks ago
  2. I am still waiting on UT-Austin and UC Irvine. I contacted their respective East Asian Studies departments to inquire about my application but they never responded...
  3. i am still waiting on Pitt too. I contacted the graduate director and he told me that they did not start reviewing applications until January 15th and that they "had an unusually large pool of strong applications this year." He also said that I should "soon hear from us."
  4. I applied to the PhD program and my portal still states that the "file is under review"
  5. Has anyone heard anything from UT Austin or UC Irvine? They are my last two hopes...

    San Diego, CA

I'm a new grad student majoring in history at SDSU. Where's a good place to stay in the area? I'm originally from Sacramento (which makes it even harder to find something because I'm not local) and am looking for a studio or 1-bedroom apartment in a decent area, and within my budget (approx. $700-950/ mo). anyone have any ideas? I would like to stay within 5-15 miles of campus;I am not too keen on living too far away from campus (over 15 miles) unless the apartment is near the trolley line. People say that I've waited too long to find anything (late July), but classes do not begin until late August, so I think that there should be something available-- Would El Cajon or Clairemont work?
  7. The graduate coordinator at San Diego State contacted me a couple of days ago to say that the department committee would meet Friday (today) to discuss my application. Today she sent me an email saying that due to "unforeseen circumstances" the committee could not meet, but that she would have a decision before April 15. I'm starting to think that I have been rejected...
  8. I applied to the Asian studies masters program at CSU Long Beach and History MA program San Diego State in February. My file was complete (meaning all of my supplementary materials were received) two weeks ago.Since it is nearly April 15th, i need to a decision so I can let the schools i have been admitted to know if I am going to accept their offers. How long should I wait before contacting the History department?
  9. any applicants to Cal State Long Beach's Asian Studies MA program?
  10. has anyone heard from San Diego State?
  11. Is the status of your application still "pending?"
  12. Has anyone heard from the University of Oregon?
  13. Just got my GRE scores: 155 verbal, 150 quantitative, and only a 4.0 analytical writing. Does this end my chances of getting into a top program for history or East Asian Studies?
  14. I'm sorry, I should have stated my interests. My true passion is the role the Japanese economic bubble played and continues to play in the Japan of today, on which I feel that there is a lack of scholarship. Beyond that, I am interested in my ability to participate in researching the modern and contemporary history of Japan, especially during the bubble period and the subsequent "lost decade" of the nineties.
  15. I am a senior history major at Northern Arizona University who is graduating in December, currently applying to various Japanese history masters and doctoral programs on the west coast. My GPA is 3.62; I am taking the GRE on the 18th. My letters of recommendation from two of my history professors should be solid, although I am worried about the other one which is being written by a philosophy adjunct. Anyway, the schools I am applying to are: University of Washington, the UC campuses in Irvine, San Diego, Davis, and Santa Barbara, Cal States San Diego, San Francisco, Fullerton, and possibly Fresno. I am also considering the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Florida State. I claim a very high level of Japanese reading and writing (I can read newspapers, popular fiction, and pre-war materials without needing a dictionary), although my speaking needs work.
