  1. Ok, you can do stuff on a tablet. But I wasn't talking about that, I was talking about software that is actually used in movie industry, in instructional design, etc. You cannot run that type of software on only 1 GB RAM and 1.4 GHz processor compared to over 12 GB RAM and processors with "speeds" of over 3 GHz. :)

Edit to thank you for matlab. I didn't know about it and it seems helpful.

  2. Tablets do not have the power computers have, either desktops or laptops. You cannot run on tablets complicate software. The apps made specifically for them are good for what the tablets can do but let's be honest, you will not be able to do some video editing or designing an e-module on tablets as you can do on a computer.

Edit to add: or run statistics software packages. Tablets simply don't have those capabilities.

Re-edit to add that I am a huge fan of some tablets (iPads) but I admit they have their limits.

  3. Be glad you have so much time left doing... well, almost nothing. Take time to make memories to take with you, as alaskagirls said.

We've had less than a month to pack, organize the move, move everything then start unpacking. With 2 kids and all their school and personal stuff, plus my school stuff (that is a lot!), believe me, the time was really short. It practically was around 3 weeks if I remember correctly. And no movers, only our close few friends (many other friends were vacationing here and there) and we. I know our move was closer, only one county and a few cities away, but painful nevertheless.

  4. No. I don't know you. Do you lie and cheat on your long term girlfriend?

Hahaha. No, of course. Sorry, when I read all posts, yours being right after mine, it looked that way. Sorry if something like this happened to you.

I've never cheated. I'm married and have 2 wonderful kids. Can't say the same (the wonderful part) about DH but we're working on it. :)

  5. We've had different orientations sessions last week and classes officially started last Thursday. Having classes only Mo, Tu and Wed, we'll practically start tomorrow but we've had the syllabi, suggested readings, powerpoints, handouts etc ahead of time to do lots of reading before classes even start.

I'm freaking out now because we've moved last month and there were lots of stuff to take care of... and I'm already exhausted even before classes start...

  6. I second the recommendation for a laser printer. Stay away from ink jets if you're going to be printing a lot.

You're initially going to pay more for the laser printer, but over the long-term there is no comparison. I've had the same toner cartridge for an entire year and have printed thousands of pages. I can buy another toner replacement for no more than $30 if I go off-brand. Compare that to an ink jet, where you'll be buying new ink every other month at $20 each little cartridge of ink (more if you need color).

I use an inkjet multi-center and the ink cartridges cost me about $10 for a set of 12 that has 3 of each color (black and the 3 main colors). They last for more than 8 months, even 10 months some of them (depends on the manufacturer) and I print a lot, and i mean a whole lot. I eat the ream of papers like nothing. I think it's a great deal. I have a Brother multi-center. But of course there are other options too, and each of us will find what works best for him/her.

  7. I emailed a prof to ask for a recommendation two weeks ago, and have I have not heard anything back. She's on sabbatical, so no office hours. If she agrees to write it, I doubt that she'll submit it on time. If she refuses, I don't know who my last letter-writer will be. I'm starting to get really worried that she just doesn't like me, and if I badger her at all I'll end up with a weak or even negative letter. Blergh.

I've had this happening to me last year. She was not answering my emails, then she was busy grading the finals (yes, it took her all that time to the finals week!). I ended up not being accepted at the universities she sent her recommendation at and getting offers from other universities where I've had the best idea of asking another professor for recommendation only because she was so darn late. Was this a pure coincidence or she plainly sent weak (not wanting to think about any negative) letters to those universities? The other 2 recommenders were the same for all the applications.

  8. You're right telkanuru, and most of the documents I needed were either on a cloud somewhere or in my dropbox. But the websites I was working on were permanently on a mobile memory device besides my server, as a precaution.

I don't know yet how the stats software looks like and my concern is if I could work on the computers in the school lab then on my desktop at home like I did during my Master program without having to spend my budget on a laptop now.

  9. Very interesting topic. Would it be very difficult to work in the lab at school on SAS, SPSS or similar software, then save the work on a portable HDD or high capacity flash drive to continue the work at home? I personally have a big Alienware (did my MA degree in educational multimedia, so lots of software) with a 26" monitor and no laptop as of now. It was never an issue to work at school then take the work to continue it at home. It would be too much of an expense right now to get a laptop, even using a store credit card to pay for it. And a small one wouldn't really help, imo it'd be an useless expense.

  10. Anyone who knows anyone, who lived at the Canyon Crest Family Housing?? Need reviews about the place. Cheap considering rent but what about other factors like freedom and guest policies?

If you are still interested in Canyon Crest Family Housing, there is the handbook online where you can find the detailed rules. They are quite a few.

  11. I wish I'd found this forum earlier, it would've helped me so much in looking around neighborhoods for rent, and all the other things we're searching for when relocating. I've chosen UCR for its great professors at GSOE and for the affordability of living in the area. My family and I have done quite a research both online and in person and Riverside won over LA. Relocating within Socal wasn't all that difficult but we had to take into consideration safer areas for our kids and doing all this all by ourselves was not too easy. We're renting a single family house around the Fairmount Park area and I'd like to know your opinion about it. For now my kids are homeschooled because it was just too much to do alll the research - house hunting - moving process and find the right schools altogether. For now they're in K12 online schooling and if this fits them, we'll keep doing it for the first year here. If not, I'm afraid of the ratings the high schools have around here... Kid1 is a freshman this year. We were hoping for I-Poly but since I chose Riverside, a commute of more than 30 miles only to get Kid1 to school is out of the question. Hubby has a 40 miles commute to his job now but oh well, he loves driving anyway and is even considering a bike soon so it's sunny on his way.

My concerns remain related on my kids schools and the area we rent in now. I'm on the waiting list for the family housing on campus but those are really tiny and the waiting list doesn't seem to move at a pace we needed.

    Thank you for any input.
