  1. I was wondering what past Fulbrighters experiences have been with leave? I applied for and received funding for several research trips to conferences and professional development experiences within the region of my Fulbright but outside of my actual country. I would like to take actual leave/vacation when my parents come to visit - I was told that I have to request the leave from the embassy and make any time up over 14 days. I'm wondering how much trouble folks had getting approved for over 14 days for work related research. We're to report trips and make requests to the embassy - are there actual check ups that occur?
  2. Anyone else going to Singapore? I just got my confirmation today. Also - anyone going to programs in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, or the Philippines? I'll be in and out of those areas throughout the year and would love to meet up with other fellows!
  3. Also - I'm looking for a roommate to move in in August - for anyone looking I own my house and have 2 cats and a dog (black lab). The common living spaces are furnished and I believe my roommate is considering selling her furniture (she's moving in with her boyfriend). The space is the entire upstairs which is a bedroom plus a small living room. I have a fenced in backyard. I'm open to having other pets in the house with the provision that they get along with the current ones. I'm try to keep the place clean and I'd like a roommate who is also relatively neat. Message me if you're interested and I can send along pictures.
  4. I take mine to Kryder out in Granger - I also like Western Veterinary Clinic. I used to go to Family Pet Health Center, however, they were quite pricey - no complaints about the care though. They charge a $40 exam fee per animal per visit though, so just walking in the door costs $40 and I had three pets so each visit was a minimum of $120 which I've never had at any other vet so I switched to the others.

I called today and found out I was nominated for Singapore - they said they would be sending the official emails in a few days - but you should be able to call and find out.
  6. I'm in a fellowship program at my school that's part of an NSF IGERT and they flat out tell us to put it in our signatures. I always sign my email with the appropriate level of formality either way and don't use my signature as the end to my emails.. and I don't think it comes off as pretentious .. when receiving emails from other people with that in the signature I've never taken it to be pretentious.

Myself and two others I know applied to Singapore have yet to hear anything *fingers crossed*
  8. Indeed - Dad won $$ in a work bracket and said he'd send some my way ... lol only reason I really cared about that game. In other news, I sincerely hope he didn't use up our family's luck for the evening.
  9. April 7th 2:30 am 1st year grad student, 2nd time applicant - Animal Behavior - here's to hoping!
  10. Ok, so I'm house shopping and making offers this week. What do you think of the following options: smallish fixer upper (nothing major.. but it needs work) in Sunnymede (what seems to be a really nice neighborhood) about a mile from school. Or larger, beautiful, updated home in River Park. I'm having trouble gauging how that neighborhood is.. nobody has said it's awesome, but nobody has said it is horrible either. It's about 4.8 miles from school. Prices are comparable between the two when you factor in taxes, ect.
  11. Check out Notre Dame.. I'm heading there for the fall and EEB is a huge growing presence in th department.. They are bringing in several new faculty in the area. I know of at least one great insect behavior prof --> look at Belovsky he does some really interesting stuff out on land notre dame has at the national bison range. They have great field sites through a program called UNDEREC with a site to do insect work in Puerto Rico too. Stipends are generous and cost of living I low. Placement into top ten program for postdoctoral positions is quite common as well.
  12. Yes, I realize that, in the event I'm fortunate enough to get the GRFP, the other fellowship will be postponed until after the three years provided by the GRFP, or alternately, I'll defer use of the GRFP for a year and use the other fellowship for my first. Additionally I found the stipulation that the cost of education goes to the school and if the student is already receiving a scholarship, the school may provide the student with those funds for books, travel to conferences, laptops, or other educationally related costs.. but the school is not required. So it looks like it could be a nice bargaining chip to get conference travel funded without having to apply to additional grants.. or at least text books potentially. Good luck to everybody!
  13. I love this award even more now... *fingers firmly crossed*
  14. Is the cost of education ($10,500) exclusively for tuition? For example, I already have a full tuition scholarship + stipend in addition to a one year fellowship through another NSF funded program... since my tuition is already covered by the school, can the cost of education be used to text books or a laptop if I needed one?

You can expect 70-90% snow coverage from anytime between Late October to early April depending on the year... at my undergrad school we hadn't had a snow day in 40 years and the day that we did it snowed 4 feet in a day and half... so just know you'll be expected to be in class and teaching unless you see those levels of accumulation
