  1. MIT Media Lab USC Mixed Reality Lab After consulting this thread @wickedgradgirl Georgia Tech
  2. After a lot of soul-searching, I finally applied to a program I was considering in 2014, and hanging out with some really bad people I had to remove from my life (at least events last year showed me that it was them causing the problem, not me) I have -1 ratings from this community, I am ready to pursue the things I truly believe in. I have not logged in here in years. This thread sums up my current interests and the future field I would like to pursue. The Fulbright fellowship is open right now, and these are the programs I am trying to apply to in the US. They are offering the fellowship to cover a full-time master's degree program or a research visit if we are doctoral students already. I have just applied for one PhD position in Europe, it is mostly experimental psychology/computational neuroscience, with many labs to choose from. My plan right now is to apply for the visiting option if I get in the European doctoral program, or for the degree option if my current application is rejected. There must be some cultural differences when it comes to declining offers, but I really like the places listed here so I will give my best to attend any of them even if another place grants my degree. I also have some things I have started in linguistics, but this is mostly a matter of finishing up with certain things I have started years ago. Ideally, I can do a more research-heavy PhD in Europe and try the visiting Fulbright option in the US to cover the more artistic/creative side.
  3. Once he gets in, sure. The problem is, it is almost December. Not much time left for exam preparation. On the other hand, not only do many schools in Continental Europe offer funded, English-taught MAs, language proficiency requirements there tend to be lower than UK universities.
  4. Hamedtr65, no offence, but you need to improve your English. It looks like it will be difficult for you do well on the IELTS and the GRE. Maybe it will be better to stay in your country and then get ready for PhD studies abroad. Your English is not bad, but you need to work on it a bit more and time is running out. However, if you are more interested in living in the UK than studying, maybe you can get a job there. You just have to honest with yourself. I am definitely not applying to US schools because I don't think I can prepare for the GRE. Also, it is not cheap and they don't offer fee reduction to international test takers. I am already forced to take a language exam (no matter where I go, Europe or China), because I come from a very small country. Good luck!
  5. Any sort of information. Are standards high only in terms of actual quality of research or are students expected to publish a certain number of papers in certain publications? Are there any skills that PhDs are supposed to have before starting their studies? I know some people here who are into data analysis. I prefer to study the mind over the brain, but I am ready to learn some basic things like coding. I am currently an MA student in China (not a Chinese national). What else? Do you think there are a lot of things that are yet to be discovered? I like the interdisciplinary nature.
  6. Thanks. I am planning to write a research proposal first and only then start applying. Might decide to stay in China. Can you tell me more about your department? I am working on the relationship between spatial representation (more cognitive science) and aspect (more linguistics). Angelina
  7. I don't want to offend anyone here, but I didn't know that the Yosemite National Park was in the middle of a desert. I have never been to America, maybe I am wrong. The Cognitive and Information Sciences doctoral program at UC Merced looks pretty interesting. I am tempted. Not to mention that I have found common research interests with faculty. Should I register to take the GRE?
  8. I already did what mncz is planning to do. I am enrolled in a master's degree program in China. It is an uphill battle, but I love what I am doing and not planning to give up. My Mandarin is much better than before, I don't think I would have learned this much unless I had decided to make the commitment. I second his advice though. You have to know what you are getting yourself into. I am not sure how things go in the US or France. In China, you can get a Master's in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (语言学及应用语言学) from a Department of Chinese. Same Department offers other degrees, such as Chinese Language and Literature. Almost all of my classmates are Chinese. Then there is a Foreign Languages Department and there you can get a Master's in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. I guess general linguistics here is leaning towards Chinese linguistics because we are part of that Department. You can try to find a PhD program in general linguistics offered by a French university or ENS. You can even try Switzerland. Explore all your options.
  9. Hey, my background is in Linguistics, but my ideas for a PhD thesis might well fit into a Cog Sci program. I am planning to apply to Aarhus University Humboldt University of Berlin Don't know much about US schools, I have not taken the GRE.
  10. Great, you have discovered you are interested in linguistics. Keep reading more about it until you think you are ready to do a PhD. Don't give up studying French if you feel this huge passion. @tspier2 Can you speak Macedonian? Are you interested in the language? I am writing an MA thesis on verbal aspect (mostly data from Macedonian) and am a native speaker. Maybe you can help me with part A, maybe I can help you if you need part B.
  11. The deadline for the program at ANU has passed already I knew that they had something called 'initial expression of interest' that was supposed to be quite early, now I just saw that it is officially too late to apply. I know what kind of research I want to be doing. It does not matter that much if the program is called Cognitive Science or Linguistics. What is important to me is faculty and prospective supervisors.
  12. I am planning to apply for Ph.D. studies in either Linguistics or Cognitive Science. Somehow the programs I like are mostly within the Cognitive Science field: Aarhus University Berlin School of Mind and Brain Australian National University Seems like most you are applying to US universities. I am not sure how the application process over there goes.
