  1. Dude, I'm switching from Electrical Engineering to Atmospheric Science. Is it possible for you to send your SOP.

  2. Hi there! That's an interesting topic, thank you for posting. I was wondering the same for my girlfriend who is going to apply for fall 2011, the deadline is going to be early Jan. I myself applied this year and got admitted for fall 2010. I am an international student and I contacted professors by email at the end of October. However, she is coming with me this summer and it would be an excellent opportunity to meet potential advisors while she is in the US. But is it too early to meet profs at the end of August if the deadline for applications is early Jan? Thanks for any advice! To clio: maybe your advisor at this time of the year cannot assure you he will have funding to support you as a research assistant, I would try to talk him again this summer!
  3. Hi Brussell Sprouts, I am also going to visit a couple of departments I was admitted to. What did you ask to faculty during your visit? Thanks.
  4. I believe you have to take into careful consideration both the advisor and location. Maybe a personal visit could help you to see if you like the area and you find yourself comfortable talking with your future advisor and members of your research group(you have to spend several years working together!). In my opinion the choice of the advisor is fundamental, in particular if you are going for a PhD. If both potential advisors and groups are great, I would pick the bigger city, where there are more things to do in your free time. But don't discard the smaller immediately, maybe it has a great campus housing where you can meet a lot of people.
  5. And I have not applied to Stony Brooks even if it was among the possible applications!!! Best of luck for your applications!
  6. Have you already been accepted from Scripps?
  7. Hi there! I have applied for a PhD in atmospheric and oceanic sciences and am still waiting for responses from Scripps Instit. of Oceanography (Phys.Ocean.) and Gatech. Has anyone been contacted or interviewed by them?? Looking at Results Search, at this time last year many people was accepted or rejected from Scripps.
  8. I think you should tell them, if asked, where else you have been accepted. It means that you are a strong candidate and they will try to get you showing all the pros of going to their school. You will receive a lot of attention, and I believe this is very good!!!
  9. I will spend my future years in a warmer place than Boston!
  10. Hello!!! I am also asking to myself all these stuff about professors past and current students, avg time to take a PhD, first authorship and also the availability of offices/desks for students.. But, where can I gain all these information? Not all profs have web pages and number or names of their current PhD students, moreover how can you know if you wil be given a desk or other facilities?? Thanks
  11. So I think I'll not be checking my email one thousand times tomorrow, if it is holiday in the US!!
  12. "I know they weren't so hot, because after the fact, she told me what she hoped _not_ to hear from applicants, and I said some of those things." Hi Siolanthe, what were those things that she hopes not to hear from applicants? I think this would help a lot other applicants!!! Thanksss
  13. Hi, I am Italian Politecnico di Milano is an esteemed university here in Italy, perhaps the best fo computer engineering. Would you receive scholarships? Milano is really expensive. University tuition are low as everywhere in Italy, I guess 1500 Euro per year. But housing is really expensive, a single room, far from the center can cost you 400 euro per month with heating, light and other expenses still to add. Are you applying to a Master's? And where would you continue for your Phd? Italy is ok for master's but I definitely encorauge you to apply somewhere else for a Phd!!! And remember this: in Italy nobody speaks english, maybe your professors, your classmates, but if you go to post office, to bakery, to pharmacy it could be a problem!! Hope this helps, if you have additional questions please let me know!!
  14. Hi there, I'm an international student. I would like to know: What happens after a phone interview with the professor you have mentioned on your statement of purpose? If the conversation went well, is there the possibility you will receive notification of admission, or professor just interview loads of students then decide which is the best one?? Thanks a lot guys!!
