  1. I wonder whether NYU results are coming today. Previous year they came even earlier, 1st of February.
  2. I think it is ok. However, if faculty at the Department of interest is large, there is a possiiblity that your POI was not on the committee. Question for people admitted to Stanford: who was the chair of admission committee this year? Of course, if this information is not confidential...
  3. Sorry, I meant 10th of February, of course.
  4. Based on previous years, no earlier than 10th of December.
  5. I don't think anything will be announced over the weekend. I think WashU in St. Louis should announce decisions next week. I also hope that UC San Diego will announce decisions next week.
  6. I think C meant Cornell, given the posted list of universities.
  7. Admission is a lottery in many ways. When committee has 500 application, at least 50-60 of them will be quite good, often more. My bet is that after initial cut offs, committee has to choose from at least 100 good applications. Given this situation, rejection does not necessarily mean that application per se is weak. In previous years there were only few people who received admission from a lot of places. Best case scenario is 3-4 out of 11-12 applications.
  8. I just wrote them e-mail:) I hope, though, that decisions will come earlier. After all, UCLA had one of the earliest deadlines.
  9. As far as I know UCLA decisions will be mid-February this year, which means week or two of waiting.
  10. Reject for Stanford. Hope more results will come next week.
  11. Hope dies last:) Waited for the call or e-mall whole day. It is not even results, it is just feeling of uncertainty. Stanford is the first school in my list, and I just need to know the first result. After that, it will be a lot easier, even if it is rejection.
  12. Well, I guess we call all expect couple of other Stanford decisions this day and probably tomorrow. I am freaking out a little bit.
  13. At the decision page of this forum first acceptances were published at 20 of February. Those who were accepted also noted that acceptances were made by phone, not mail. This year, I think (and hope) they will do it either this week or next week. Preferably this week:)
  14. People typically post their results at the results' page. Previous year people posted there a lot, both rejections and acceptances.
  15. Days differ from year to year, as far as I noticed. Stanford mailed decisions in the second half of February previous year, but this year they explicitly promissed to mail decisions in the end of January or in the beginning of February. Waiting, however, is definitely annoying.
  16. I would prefer to get at least one good offer before Harvard sends results. Otherwise waiting for March will be a little bit nervous.
  17. I applied to Harvard govt. Long shot, but with a bit of luck I think I may have a chance. They publish decisions late, though, typically no earlier than in March. Stanford is much faster.
  18. Previous year WUSTL and couple of other schools made their decisions at this time. I think decisions from Stanford, UCLA and UC San Diego also can be announced in the upcoming week, given decision schedule previous year.
  19. Congrats to those admitted to Ohio State. Good school.
  20. 162Q abd 170V are very good scores. I also applied to HYP, alongside with several other good schools, and my scores were 161Q abd 163V. Princeton has quite large program, so anything above 160 in both sections should do the trick. I think that the most important thing is to get through cut off points, though it is not clear where these points are located for each school. I think, 160 should be the cut off point in top places. Also, there is a question of reliability of GRE results. For instance, there are two guys, one scored 160, other scored 164. Does this mean the first guy knows math worse? For instance, if the second guy took GRE 5 times and the first took test only one time, higher scores may be due to higher amount of attempts. Also, different versions of the test include different combinations of sections. You can be just lucky with questions, or you just can't solve problems fast enough. Point is, differences in 3-4 points cannot say much. I think, substantive differences start from 5 points. There won't be a lot of people who score above 165 in both sections, that is for sure. P.S. As far as I know Princeton, Harvard and Yale send their results at the end of February, so waiting will be really annoying.
  21. Everybody gets rejections, this just how this process works:) Even the best applications got rejected because of lack of research fit, professor goes on leave etc. Academic job market is even worse. Here you send 10-15 applications and got bunch of rejections and, in a good scenario, one or couple acceptances. With job market, from what I know, you can send 60-70 applications and get no offers. Good news is that job applications are typically free:)
  22. I think there won't be any "big waves" of admission mails before first week of February. First week of February is usually big, a lot of mails are sent. There are very good schools, though, that send mails only at the end of February and the beginning of March.
  23. I think your chances are pretty solid. GPA in IR and verbal GRE scores can be a problem, but given the fact that you've applied to 17 schools this shoudn't be a big deal. Your Q score is very good, better than mine anyway. Given the fact that you are non-native speaker, even top universities should make allowances for Verbal scores below 160, though this rule does not always work. I have buddies who scored 170 in Quantitative section but did not do well on Verbal, and despite their experience with some cool methodological stuff, they still got rejections from top schools. Again, from what your reported (GREs, amount of schools you've applied to, schools you've applied too) your chances are very, very good. But committees review applications as a whole, and LOR and SOP matter as much as tests if not more. If you LORs are from professors who have at least some credibility in US, than you are in pretty good shape. If not, chances are still good but acceptances from top tiers are less likely. Anyway, best of luck! A lot of admission decisions will be mailed in 2-3 weeks.
  24. Will see. I am applying to 10 places, I think I definitely have a shot at 1 or 2 places, though all 10 are top-tiers. I am not sure about other places, though with a bit of luck I think I can get to Ivy League school. Stanford is probably a waste of 125$, but even if the choice is purely random, this gamble has positive expectation, so I will send an application.
  25. I know this is quite common question but I am little bit concerned about GRE scores. I took test at 14th of October and got 161 Q 163 V, don't know AW score yet. So, am I in good shape for top-tiers like Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, Yale and Columbia? I know that I probably above any cut-offs. My substantive interests are interstate and intrastate conflicts, with emphasis on quantitative research and game-theoretic modelling. I have Fulbright Scholarship for my current M.A. education and couple of prestigious scholarships back in Russia (my country of origin and undergrad education), also APSA 2014 annual meeting travel grant.
