  1. I would also add that as someone who got an undergrad degree at a not-well-known institution, getting an MA at a "brand name" institution, even in the allegedly non-useful field of sociology, opened a ton of doors for me job-wise. I'm making twice as much as I was making at jobs before I got my MA, and found my rate of interviews to job apps increased dramatically once I put that fancy name on my resume. It sucks, and it's unfair, but unfortunately it's the name of the game. That said, if you're set on PhD track, doing an MA at Columbia and not "standing out" could hurt your chances at the PhD.
  2. It's obviously opportunistic. But it's Columbia higher ups, not the department, that's forcing the high costs.
  3. Knowing Whitford, it doesn't seem like a not very nice response. Just his personality.
  4. I think they were asking whether the silence meant a definite rejection from the PhD program. I haven't heard from them yet either and don't know whether or not that means it's a definite rejection.
  5. I did a terminal MA at Columbia and had a good experience. It's expensive, but fortunately it's only a one year program. I know Boston College has one too but I know very little about it.
  6. Your 100% acceptance rate is awesome, congrats. But I do think that given the fact that applying is generally a crapshoot, applying to 7 or 8 programs or more is wise (as long as you're not stretching yourself too thin and sacrificing the quality of your applications). I know plenty of absurdly qualified applicants who had to apply multiple years in a row because of the competitiveness of the process.
  7. I just called Harvard. All those accepted have been notified. Those waitlisted have not been notified.
  8. Yes, in an attachment in an email sent from Alice Justice. PM me if you want more info.
  9. I ride my bike in the cold until I'm too cold/tired to think about anything else. Hierarchy of needs or whatever.
  10. I was in the general MA in sociology at Columbia, and graduated last May. It's a great program. Happy to provide answers to anyone's questions about it!
  11. Mine says the same, and I didn't apply for the MA (and actually am a grad of their MA program, so I can only assume they aren't going to offer me MA admission as a consolation prize like they do with some other PhD applicants...) I would just wait it out a little while. If the administrative assistants in that department say not all acceptances have been sent out, I'm inclined to trust them despite the mixed messages. Try not to think about it too much and good luck!
  12. I got a phone call from a POI at NYU yesterday and then an email later in the day.
  13. Maxine, don't be ridiculous, POIs aren't people. Also, there's still hope for Stanford.
  14. I say, literally every time, "I'm wondering if it's possible to know if all acceptances have been sent out for the PhD program." If no notifications have been sent out, I'd say "I'm wondering if it's possible to know the expected timeline for acceptances and rejections for the PhD program." They answer and I say thanks and hang up. Bye Felicia.
  15. Lol. They haven't sent out any notifications yet, have they?
  16. I called Harvard a few times and no one answered. Happy to be your resident shameless soc department caller.
  17. Columbia is where I draw the line, since I know them too well...
  18. Anyone who got into Duke or University of Washington going to the recruitment weekends?
  19. Lolol Maxine any time. You don't have to tell them your name or anything!
  20. I just called Stanford and they said not all acceptances have been sent out, fyi..
  21. USC just called me and left me a voicemail asking me what schools I'd been accepted to. I'll likely tell them that I won't be attending which should be one more acceptance for somebody else... Hope everyone's holding up well/taking care of themselves!
