  1. i'm currently a first yr MSPPM at CMU. If you look at the boards from last year, I had a lot of difficulty deciding where to end up. For those looking to go to DC, the apprenticeship looks appealing but don't be discouraged if you end up at the Pitt campus either. in the beginning of the year, those on the two yr track are able to switch to dc next year-- if you really want to. there are currently some people in my program who have dropped out of the dc track in order to stay in Pitts. one of the advantages of being at the Pitt campus is being able to pick your classes. during your second yr in DC, you cannot pick your classes. also, the DC program will only be in its 2nd yr next yr, so i would try to get a hold of students who are currently there and let them tell you how they feel about it. also, you get save a lot of $ if you stay in Pburgh.

craigslist is definitely an option. also, there are a lot of flyers on campus but most of them are undergrads seeking roomies. graduate housing is located mostly in arroyo vista (on-campus) but others are scattered around irvine (many are not w/in driving distance). i've heard bad things about the irvine co. but they have pretty much monopolized all off-campus housing in the area with the exception of parkwest apts. if you will have access to a car i would suggest living in costa mesa for slightly cheaper housing. newport beach is also an option except the beach houses can get loud on the weekends. good luck!

Hi, Sorry i'm not in your field but I have officially accepted my admission to the Heinz School today. I will be earning (if all goes as planned) an MS in Public Policy Management. I'm looking forward to the cheaper standard of living in the burgh (compared to my current status in Orange Co, CA)! Now it's time to secure a place!
  5. yesterday i called a school for the second time in a week 1/2. the lady remembered my name and actually apologized for not having a decision yet. she even went on to say she knows i have decisions to make and that they will try to notify me by the end of the week. she was polite and i feel that you should at least give them a first call if it's really bugging you. otherwise, just wait?
  6. I am a current undergrad at UCI and the post above me pretty much spells out how Irvine is a VERY sterile city. If you want cheap housing I would try to obtain on campus housing-- I believe there's graduate student housing in AV (Arroyo Vista). Obviously having a roommate would be a cheaper option but if you're like me I prefer my own room. The cheapest off-campus housing is at Parkwest which is about 7-10mins. away from campus by vehicle (there are campus shuttles that go there too). For your own room prepare to spend anywhere from $700-800/month. You could eat cheap if you cook at home so your funding should be enough. Good luck, please don't listen to me but I'm glad to be getting out this place (born and raised OC)
  7. As a UC undergraduate (Irvine) and hopeful graduate student (LA), I'm not at all surprised by the clogged streamline of admissions decisions. The UC system is overloaded in every way possible and financial aid is terrible to deal with. I squirm every time I need to see the cashier, registrar, or financial aid people. Obviously it still has not prevented me from staying in the UC system and I'm currently waiting for an admissions reply in LA. With CA's tight budget, it won't be long before fees skyrocket like gas prices (it's in the beginning stages). Good luck to everyone

If funding negotiations don't work through with other schools, I will be a UPitts grad student starting this Aug. Like a maniac, I have researched the area and like what I see so far. I hate to self-categorize myself but I'm sort of into the artsy, chic type of neighborhoods and look forward to finding a place in either Lawrenceville or Bloomfield. I was just wondering how feasible these areas are to the university (I won't have a car) and whether this is a good choice in general. I also would not mind biking. I've noticed rent is a lot cheaper than what I'm used to (born and raised in Southern CA) which is a plus. If there's any other insight into nightlife, that is also appreciated I think the weather might be my biggest challenge but I did exchange in Holland for 6 months so I think it won't be too much of an issue. Thanks!!!
  9. erin i am a testament to the ford school admit/georgetown reject. i don't get it but i guess schools are really looking for who they deem 'fit' therefore, w/ my own personal experience gtown seems to be picky but as i'm seeing from above posts so is princeton. i imagine ksg is also picky. i don't know why sipa would be seeing as their rank is low for mpp. anyways, good board question!
  10. i received an acceptance from the Ford school today If you're still waiting for notification, it should be neutral since it took so long to get any sort of response. still worried about the funding aspect but glad i got in.
  11. i promised myself i wouldn't go on gradcafe this weekend and lurk people's posts but i'm here...instead of working on my thesis blah, i haven't heard from ucla, chicago, carnegie mellon, sipa, or umich... i hear a lot of people have heard from these schools already so i'm guessing i should treat these as rejections? so far, i got into AU and pittsburgh and awaiting the billz$$$ the money thing is killing me, i would hate to feel like my hard work and the whole admissions process didn't pay off for 08-09 but if i don't receive any funding i don't think i can go anywhere. luckily, i have no undergrad debt (thanks to living at home and going to public univ. mostly) but i would still hate to carry $50k+ debt after i'm finished. i'm thinking i'll just find work next yr, increase my gre scores, brush up my foreign language skills, apply for nsf/fulbright... i feel like i'm changing my mind everyday
