Hello all, infrequent commenter here emerging from the shadows to ask for general advice. I've been waitlisted at my top choice (CUNY) and just found out that I am officially rejected from everywhere else--though I had been expecting that news for some time when I started seeing the acceptances on the results board. I am wondering what the best course of action would be. I  emailed the DGS two weeks ago (when I was still waitlisted somewhere else and waiting to hear from a few other places) letting him know that how much I love the program and how excited I would be to attend, etc. etc. Do I reach out to POIs? Email the DGS again? Start planning for next year already? My advisor insists that staying distant is the best course of action, but considering how horribly this application season is going I'm starting to question his judgement. Any and all advice appreciated--and congratulations to all those posting about acceptances!

Achhh I've been in your shoes some years ago and got into CUNY's anthro program from the waitlist. I imagine that the EO of the program sent you an email inquiring if you are still interested. I think an enthusiastically-worded email would definitely help. I really believe that visibility is important in this process. The best thing you can do, if possible, might be attending the colloqs that are organized almost every Friday evening by CUNY's Anthro program. After the colloqs there is a wine and cheese event where you may find a chance to talk to your POIs and emphasize your interest. However, if you get into the program from the waitlist, there is a good chance that you might have tuition-only fellowship. In that case, you may need to work hard (multiple TAships, TAships, and teaching your own class at the same time) to make a living. So you need to decide if you really want to take that path.

I'm sorry to hear that!! I'm (most probably) also rejected this cycle. We are going to start a new topic to prepare for next year, if you want to join?

Thanks Evelyn, I do not know if I have the courage or perseverance to go for yet another cycle but I will definitely join you if I decide to do so in a near future. Good luck with your endeavour!

@farflung @boneflower Perhaps I was a bit unclear with this post. I had spoken with this professor months ago before the colloquium schedule was finalized. We had been talking and I said I looked forward to meeting him in the near future, and he responded with "If you visit the department, it would be best to come early in the Spring semester, around February while the admissions committee is reviewing applications. Many prospective students visit at this time and meet with faculty members they hope to work with if admitted... Some time in mid-Feb would be best to visit during a Friday when we have a colloquium speaker and reception. The colloquium schedule for next semester won't be up for a while, but this is where it will be posted when it is [insert link]."

Fast forward to a couple of days ago, the schedule was finally posted and the professor personally emailed me to let me know that it was. I don't know if the professor has any info about what's going on with the admissions committee or if he is completely out of he loop, but from what he said, students often go out there to visit the department after they've already applied and while the committee is reviewing applications. It just seems kind of risky to go there during this time, especially because it requires me flying across the country and taking off work to do so. Does this make the situation more clear now?

From some friends who received interviews in the last couple of years, I know that CUNY invites possible admits to their colloquia but this happens in a more organized way, with official interview requests from the adcom etc. I haven't heard of any other schools using this method so far. And for CUNY, I haven't heard of this happening before you receive an official interview request. I do not know if they change their method but this is confusing. I think a good way might be calling the department and asking about the status of your application. This may clarify the situation if there are any misunderstandings. I hope that it works out well for you.

    Ahh just got into Princeton!!!

Hey woooww!! Congrats! I feel like it is one of my good fits but I haven't heard a word yet. May I ask if it is a personalized email or a mass one? Congrats once again! Apparently it is a time to celebrate!!!

I can claim one of the two interviews posted on the results page,  and it was a personal email asking to schedule a 20 min. skype conversation with two faculty members.

Oh Congrats rkstahl and good luck!

  6. I am very much curious about Berkeley interviews. Congrats to whoever they are! Looking at the last years' results I conclude that Berkeley does not send all the interviews at once. Could you maybe tell us if the invitation sounds like a mass mail or an individualized one?

  7. Wow! It seems that the first notification of this season for our discipline has arrived for an Irvine applicant! Congrats and good luck with the interview process whoever you are!! I haven't applied there but I was so excited to see this first notification coming. :) I hope we can all receive some good news very soon.

  8. Hi there everyone! Are there anyone else, like me, who is finished with applications but has to deal with final papers? I feel like I organized everything according to the application this semester and now that I am done I just cannot find any motivation to write my papers.B) Anyways good luck to you all if you experience the same and good luck with the waiting process in general!

  9. After so many rejections I can't believe I actually made it to NYU!!!! I was on the wait list, and got an e-mail form my POI in the middle of the night, couldn't sleep after, I was so excited!

Altough I mostly was a quiet lurker here, I wouldn't made it through this awfull process without this awesome forum, thank you so much!

Hope you can also find your perfect place  :D

Wow that sound great. So happy for you! Congratulations!!

  10. Does anybody have any idea why the Duke Cultural Anthropology decisions are taking so long?  It sounds like it's much later than they ever anticipated, since the website says they usually invite admitted applicants for a visit in March.  March is almost over!

    Hey meglet,

From a friend who is currently enrolled in Duke's cult. Anthro phd program I learnt that in the last years they sent the rejections but since there were spots rejected by the first admits and they could not fill them with the waitlisted applicants they sent acceptances to once rejected students. Probably they want to avoid such problems. Apparently they have a problem with their admissions system and it sounds quite awkward. I recently saw on the results board that someone is waitlisted 2-3 days ago for duke's program.

  11. I'm definitely not going to do it without funding... I just don't know anybody who's attended or knows much about it. So, I'm interested in what others think about the program itself.

Yess, anybody with MAPSS experience? I would love to hear your thoughts...

  12. A lot of prospective students were invited to visit a dept. colloquium yesterday or last friday. From the Admissions chair, I know they sent out all notices to the top 13 applicants they are offering spots for by today... waitlisted people are being notified but I don't know if all have been. They only have 7 fully funded spots.

I suppose they have 9 fully funded spots. That was what admissions committee chair wrote in his first message for making an interview.

But do we know how many people there are on the waitlist? I have no any other offer and I am waitlisted at CUNY which is my top choice! Such a weird/ tough situation... :(

  13. I had a Michigan interview 2 weeks ago and have heard nothing since. They called it an "interview," not just a conversation with faculty.

Congrats for the interview and good luck with the process!! I wonder which track you are in. I suppose Michigan only interviews with linguistic anthro applicants, right?

  14. I also wonder whether they sent all e-mails simultaneously, but I think we will know today anyway, since somebody posted rejection.

Rejections might come later. I suppose the one who entered that rejection has called Columbia since the way of communication is indicated as phone. Yet, because there is a waitlist post I am inclined to think that acceptances are over. Congrats guys!

  15. Hello all! Congrats for the admits & patience and relief for everyone still waiting like me.

I wonder if you think that all of the interviewees for duke cultural anthropology have been informed already. Does anybody have some solid info about this? There was a post on january 20, explaning that their shortlist was ready but not much news on the results page after that.

I mean I applied to 16 schools and heard nothing from any of them so I started feeling quite weird and miserable about all this process and I thought duke was a good fit. =(
