  1. Thanks for sharing! The same thing happened to me Better Call Saul stop tarnishing the name of an awesome show with your unnecessary negativity
  2. I can't say if the 4 will hurt your chances at Vanderbilt, but I got in with a 5. I you do end up retaking, I found that writing as much as humanly possible worked well. Length is a big determinant of score, as dumb as that is. As long as it makes sense.
  3. I would also like to say - take all these experiences an opinions with a grain of salt. None of it is really objective, and you need to do what's best for you. If you have a good financial package at your school, it's not financially irresponsible to choose it! And there are plenty of schools that reserve spots for out of field students, to the point where it may be less competitive. I would wager that was true at some of the schools I applied to, because I got in with worse stats than many other in fielders and they like to fill these quotas. The extra time is not necessarily "wasted" either. It can help you stand out as unique rather than the hundreds of comm dis majors with similar experiences, and at least for me taking time off to work and do prereqs online was awesome since now I have a lot of savings and I won't need to take out loans for my masters. The opinions here are polarized, but I just wanted to push back on the "it would be dumb for you to not do a comm dis major" opinion! I don't think thts necessarily true! Good luck either way
  4. I applied to 3 year programs, programs with 5 prereqs due before matriculation, and programs that just add an extra semester (with the latter two options you can often take everythin you need the summer before. Just FYI there are plenty of options! I got into UMD, my top choice, with no prereqs. Now I'm deferring a year and doing prereqs online while working and saving a lot of money. I would never trade my small liberal arts education and study abroad experience for anything!! Some schools really prefer diversity in their applicants. Do what feels right!
  5. Some programs don't need you to do the whole post bacc though, so it's good to look into which courses you need to take at all the schools you're targeting.
  6. Yes it's about 900 per course. The full program can take 3 semesters (summer fall spring) if you do 4 classes/semester. I've only done 2 so far but it was very easy to do while working 40 hrs/week. I think if you just google USU SLP Online you'll find what you're looking for.
  7. I don't think you've missed the summer deadline for USU online! It's been great so far and it seems like everyone is accepted.
  8. Magoosh is 80-100 bucks. I thought it was pretty good, but take a full length practice test on the ETS website (free) to see where you stand. If money is tight and you don't need to improve math so much, just get the free Magoosh GRE vocabulary app. I learned SO MANY WORDS!! And they were spot on with what was tested. The writing is done during the test. It's not as much about knowledge as writing as much as you can and backing up a thesis with plausible examples. There's a list of potential topics on the ETS site. Good luck!!
  9. Buyer's remorse can be expected when making a huge decision like this! I am in the go cheaper camp as well (as long as the school you chose will give you everything you need). No shame in that! Either way you're gonna be a great SLP!
  10. I know it's hard to turn down big names!! It was tough to give up on Vanderbilt but UMD is an awesome school too, and it's cheaper and has better funding opportunities! Plus if you have any desire to stay in DC after graduating, the prestigious clinical placements will be a huge benefit. Take this with a grain of salt, though, I'm obviously extremely biased toward UMD and also cost conscious. My bf went to law school and has over 100K in debt and it will be a huge, crushing burden for a very long time.
  11. It's not crazy, TC is an awesome school and NY is fun. If you know you wanna work in the schools you could try for the NYC DOE scholarship.... But you might be in a prett sketchy neighborhood for a few years there. There's also public service loan forgiveness if you feel comfortable enough counting on that to be around/you to be working in certain areas through 10 years. Either way you have two awesome choices!!! Good luck!!
  12. Edit: sorry I forgot to add in however much the 3rd year at UMD is... I think that adds another 15K. Either way though, "Columbia is Columbia" and is super competitive doesn't seem like the most compelling reason. I'm almost certain UMD is more competitive lol (accepting 20-25 of over 250 apps). The bilingual thing seems like a good reason. So if someone is paying for your school or you have enough savings then I would say go for it! But that's a LOT of loans.
  13. Did you get any funding at TC? If you're doing the 3 year program it's over $100,000, not including NYC living expenses. UMD is only $34,000 in state. Unless you're in a position where you got funding or otherwise don't need to worry about money, I think the choice is obvious! That much debt would drive me insane!
  14. I haven't heard back from UT Dallas yet either, and my application has been complete since weeks before the deadline. I called and they said they are still reviewing them. What a waste of money!
  15. Magoosh really helped me! Even just getting the free Magoosh vocabulary app worked wonders. Another big help was having my smartest friends and Ph.D. level colleagues read my personal statement. It was amazing how different people caught the same mistakes and had the same suggestions. There is a good thread on this board (I think called "SLP SOP") that helped me tremendously. I think many schools are impressed by research experience as well. Mine was minimal (1 semester in a clinical research/autism course as well as a library thesis), but I think it sounded impressive on paper. If you have any specific questions, let me know. You can do it!!
