I went to Tufts for 4 years and have been in the area for another year after. It is not especially difficult to find an apartment around here, in my opinion. I don't think it'd be any more scary and confusing than other locations in the US. It's certainly more expensive to rent than, say, the mid-west, but it's not impossible to live on for a graduate student. Think about how many graduate students are in the Boston area. A ton. They all find a place to live. Take it one day at a time and don't sweat the unknown.

I lived in Boston for a number of years after undergrad, and am planning on heading back to grad school.  It's definitely possible to find housing, but I'd recommend an early start.  A few of my friends have already locked down an apartment for September 1st, and we're planning on looking in early May, which is the soonest we can fly up to find something.  In my experience, it's easier to find affordable places up near Tufts or out by Boston College, but if you really want to be on T or in a specific neighborhood (like JP) it can be a bit more challenging.  I do think you'll find something though, and the nice thing is that if you don't like it chances are a few months later it won't be hard to find something better.  Good luck!

Hey all, thank you so much for the feedback! You have all been so helpful, I really appreciate it! Just a quick question, I was wondering if some or all of you could help me with.

So looking at the average funding offered for both Tufts and Northeastern to Psychology graduate students, I noticed a substantial difference between the stipends. Tufts offers approx. $20,000 while Northeastern offers approx. $29,000. I know that @ts1493 said that the Tufts area is generally more affordable, however, is it really that much more affordable that the stipend would be more than $9,000 less? Both schools seem somewhat close to one another so i am wondering if the difference in stipend is due to cost of living in the area or if one department simply has better/more funding. Thanks again!
