Hi ilmk92, finding paid work is pretty tough. Having said that, I found work on my second day in Geneva. I teach German (my native language) at a private language school. If your native language is German, French or English (and with English you need a CELTA or TOEFL teaching certificate), you can contact the language schools here. Otherwise there are some jobs at the uni and I know people worked during the winter holidays there. Some also offer private tutoring. There are also some paid internships, but they are VERY hard to get. In terms of scholarships, I think that depends on where you are from. I haven't heard of anyone getting a scholarship once they got here, but I also don't know anything. Lolothefirecat, it would probably be easier if your partner was already your husband, as Switzerland doesn't recognise partnerships outside of marriage to my knowledge. But if you can show that you are just about to get married, that might also count. For your dogs, maybe look in France? They seem to have larger houses than here in Geneva. researchfreak, I know Cité has some couples studios. They are tiny but also a lot cheaper than Picciotto.

Research freak, I moved to Geneva with my husband and we got a family apartment (CHF 2500 per month) at Picciotto and sublet the second small bedroom. It's pretty tough to find accommodation as a couple, so apply everywhere and take whatever you can get! Hi Kay-p, I live at Picciotto and there is no rodent problem at all! To ajm2016: I have heard that in the past, consultancy firms used to love recruiting from IHEID, but the job market has gotten so bad, that there just aren't any jobs around. So not sure if it'd be better at another school, but you will have to be very proactive at the Institute.

Hello @kotsa, lots of people will be subletting their rooms over the summer holidays, so I imagine you will be able to find a place for that time. But yes, it is annoying that there is this gap between when the French course starts and when you get a room.. Hello @Magaaa, you can send an email to the housing administration and ask them. It's possible that they're not sure yet, as they are still allocating apartments, but they're usually pretty good at replying. In terms of how I'm liking it all: the academic side of the Institute is great, the lecturers are very knowledgable and the courses are generally structured well. However, if you're like me and come from a place where lecturers are very approachable, you might find the transition a bit difficult. Depending on you programme (I am in MIA), there really isn't much contact between you and the professor. But I gather than is somewhat different in the disciplinary programmes. On the other hand, the administrative side of the Institute is quite frustrating. I sometimes get the feeling that they really don't want to help you. But after you've settled in, you shouldn't need them too much anymore, so it's not much of a problem. I remember reading that some of you are excited to become fluent in French: most people here find it very difficult to practise their French, seeing as most classes are in English and most students speak English to each other. So if you want to really learn French, you will still have to put a lot of effort into it. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll happily try and answer them.

Hey guys, I'm a current student at IHEID and thought I'd see if any of you have any questions. I remember being super curious and really wishing there was someone to help, so here I am! Finding accommodation in Geneva is very difficult! But no one has ever needed to sleep under a bridge, so that's good! Regarding housing: Picciotto (the Institute's housing) is super nice! Most apartments are shared (between 2, 3 or 4 people). There are some studios and some couples apartments. Then there are also family apartments. The ones on the higher floors are more expensive because the view is BEAUTIFUL from high up! And yes, it is very very close to the Institute. In my opinion (I live here), it's the best student accommodation. So if you can afford it and you get a room, take it. In terms of being close to restaurants etc.: Geneva is very small and very expensive! So you can either travel to restaurants very easily, or - more likely - never eat out at all.. Many of us will also be subletting rooms before the start of next semester. I know I will be trying to find someone to sublease my room (in a family apartment) for the first three weeks in September. So there will most likely be rooms you can base yourselves in before the semester starts and find accommodation from here. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Hey, congrats on getting accepted and the scholarship! You're right, there is a difference between European and US schools: most of that comes from the fact that they are usually much more anti-fundationalist than US schools, which tend to be a lot more positivist in their approach. I hope that makes sense? So yes, you'd probably come out with more 'hard' skills from a US school. Although as far as European schools go, IHEID is pretty good with doing qualitative and quantitative courses. Also, the location is hard to beat (unless you want to study in NYC or Washington or course). But European schools are also much less proactive with helping their students find internships and work. So you'd probably have to build your own network if you were to return home to the US after your degree. For me personally, being debt-free would always trump anything else, but that's a personal decision. I hope my comments could at least be a little bit helpful. Good luck deciding, sounds like you have several great options! I really hope you can find funding! I first applied to IHEID a couple of years ago and was accepted but couldn't go without a scholarship. So I spent some time saving and am now going without having applied for a scholarship for this year. So even if you can't go now it doesn't have to be the end of your IHEID career. All the best!

Hey guys, I'm curious as to why you didn't apply in the first round of decisions? Was it that you hadn't heard of IHEID yet or was it something else? For anyone reading this thinking of applying next year, I can recommend applying for the early round of admissions. Our wait seemed to be shorter than that of the second round. Yes I also contacted them about this, also because they kind of stuffed up my preferences.. Hopefully it'll work out, otherwise there are lots of other (cheaper) options around as well, such as Cité, Foyer etc.

We were offered a 'deluxe' couple's apartment for CHF 2,500 per month, which we obviously can't afford! I was wondering if they try to get rid of their expensive ones in the first round? Or maybe I'm just being a bit pessimistic about their intentions.

It seems to me like the two programmes are quite different? So it would depend on what you want to get out of your masters and do afterwards I'd say. I turned down an Msc Conflict Studies at LSE in favour of IHEID because IHEID seems to help you get jobs and also the location is amazing! A friend of mine who went to LSE said that I'd definitely made the right decision. Bt it all depends on you I'd say

Did anyone else get the link to apply for the Student House? I just applied and the email said we'd be notified of the outcome on 28th of February and if offered a place would have to pay the deposit by 15th of March. It also mentioned that 'a “first come, first served” rule will be applied'..

I got into the MIA but all the programmes look pretty great! I've interned with the Asia Pacific Centre for the R2P in Brisbane and with the Global Centre for the R2P in NYC and written some guest blogs on genocide for the Auschwitz Institute. I hope to be doing some more genocide-related internships in Geneva! Yes I hope I will qualify because since I've lived here for seven years it's not like I can just hop over to Switzerland to have a look at accommodation haha

Also, is anyone else applying for student accommodation? I will definitely apply to Piciotto, but wondering if Cité Université or others would also be worth it?
