  1. UPDATE: The torch has successfully been passed! The new organizer of the group will be posting on here so that 2016 women-identifying applicants know whom to contact about joining the group. Best of luck to everyone this year!

Just to be more specific, we created a private Facebook group last year for women-identifying applicants. The group still exists. It contains quite a bit of useful information. If you choose to take it over, the responsibility is minimal: it just means adding other women-identifying applicants to the group upon request. This involves a slight bit of vetting to make sure you aren't adding trolls, but that's really just a matter of making sure the FB pages of people who ask to be added are legit. The group is hidden, so if you take over, please post on Grad Cafe that people can private message you to request to be added to the group. The group is also set up so that any member can add other members. This allows people to add their friends who are applying. I would also be thrilled to turn the climate contacts gmail account over to someone who is interested in continuing this tradition this year. I really encourage someone to do one or both of these things. It's not difficult, it's the sort of grassroots involvement that you can put on your CV, and it it's good for applicants to have a supportive community. I know a lot of you don't get involved with Grad Cafe until December, so I don't expect a response right away. Thanks. -Cherie

  2. Hi, all. Two points of interest.

    1) Is there a woman applicant this year who wants to take over the Facebook group for women applicants? We have lots of climate contact info on there. If you are interested (and can show me that you aren't a troll), message me. I will turn it over to you.

  3. Congratulations on making the decision PreciselyTerrified!

& my best wishes to all applicants!

I will be attending Toronto as well, but I'll be in the English department; however, I hope to take a few classes in the Philosophy department. Feel free to PM me!

    Thanks!

  4. I sort of did at UCI, even though I had never visited campuses before and thought that the feeling was natural (until I went to Davis and UWM and didn't feel that way).

I think psychologically the best way to make an important decision is to expose yourself to all options, and go with gut feeling. Don't try to analyze it by doing a pro/con chart. Go with whichever place that excites you the most!

"Don't try to analyze it." That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. :) If only that were possible...

  5. Hey, PreciselyTerrified. Same situation as you. UNC is the only school I'm considering (if I get in) that I haven't been to before, and it's so far from where I now call home that I'm considering visiting. I think it probably would feel awkward (isn't it pretty awkward of them to SAY that?!), but I think they should also understand that we are likely going to have about 12 hours to make a huge decision, so we want to know as many variables as possible. So I might be visiting, but I'm not yet sure if I can gather the finances.

I know what you mean. I really don't feel awkward about visiting. It's not like it's shameful to be on the waitlist. I mean, the point in going isn't to suck up or make puppy eyes at them -- it's to see what it's like there, and that's important.

  6. Oh wow, yeah. That does kind of make a difference. Probably won't be spending the money travelling out there, now. Thanks for the advice. Congrats on getting in!

Thanks. That does suggest to me that I probably will remain on the waitlist, but I think I would like to visit. In the event that I got in, I would need to have visited in order to even consider the offer, and if it's April 14, the chance will have passed.

  7. unreal how different the approaches are at these various programs! 20 offers at UNC versus 5 offers at UW-Madison! In that case, does UNC have a tiny waitlist as opposed to Madison's enormous one? I know there was the decline at Madison early this week, but nobody has mentioned being accepted off the waitlist. Perhaps someone who doesn't post here has been offered the spot.

I was told the waitlist at UNC is very short.

  8. Has anyone had a visit experience that has left you feeling something like, "This is exactly where I want to be. My choice is made"? I haven't. They're all awesome. I hate making this type of decision.

  9. I'm waitlisted at Chapel Hill and am not sure how much time I should be putting into considering the possibility that I'll get in. When I initially asked about visiting, the response was, "You’d be welcome to visit, and sometimes people do—as long as you wouldn’t feel awkward?" The email was very nice, but the question mark left me feeling like visiting would be an unusual choice. But as the decision deadline approaches, I'm realizing that if I got into Chapel Hill at the last minute, there's no way I'd be able to accept the offer sight unseen. Is anyone waitlisted at Chapel Hill and visiting?

  10. You know I hope I wasn't' creepy today- I had to do the transcript thing for Purdue, and I emailed the secretary telling her that I had mailed my transcript requests so she could make a note they were on their way (the other day I had emailed her back from the waitlist email telling her I was happy to be on the waitlist and asked her one question about it). Those are the only two emails I sent (or plan to send), but I hope that wasn't overly creepy or obsessive to tell her I already sent out my transcript requests- I just wanted to emphasize my interest! I have no intention of emailing Purdue or UW-Madison for updates, I know they will contact me if they want me.

That doesn't sound creepy, don't worry.

  11. Congratulations to you! Are you in England, or the Continent? It says that it was added tomorrow, February 26th (I'm on the East Coast in America).

I'm in Philadelphia. I don't know why it's doing that!

    Congrats!!

    Thanks!
