@erinvieve: Okeydoke. That makes sense. But, Timothy App isn't the summer director is he? I was told Zlata Baum was and that is who would be going through the recommendations from the interview list this week. Probably doesn't matter. I interviewed with Bibiana Suarez, the faculty member who wanted to work with me. Yeah, I heard about 10 would be accepted as a whole for summer. She was recommending only 2 for her. The Photo program odds were a bit more competitive, but I had already made the first cut. I am going nuts over here. I had an hour long interview...and it went super well. This is my TOP CHOICE. That program is amazing. Maybe we'll both get in. What was weird was, my REALLY CLOSE FRIEND does drawing and she was picked by the same faculty member and we are up against each other for those 2 spots. Crazy, right? We interviewed within hours of each other. We hail from the same school and we show in the same circles....but, we do WAY different work. I hope we find out soon. Best of luck to you!!!! -

Also...You have Mount Royal, Hoffberger and low-residency in your post. Those are 3 different programs, no? Which one did you apply to? -

@erinvieve: MICA low-residency: Who did you speak with? The director of the low-residency is a woman. Zlata Baum. Me and my friend were interviewed about 11 days ago and they said we would know this week. Everyone did Skype or phone interviews for the low-residency according to my interviewer. The faculty that called you is supposedly the one that wants to work with you in the program....this is why I am asking. I was on a "short list" supposedly for both full-time and summer. -

@nathancotephoto & brianmc: I don't think it's about suppressing the urge to make politcial statements in your work. I think it's about adding something NEW to the conversation. We have seen the flag manipulated...Are there any other new ways to say "America" besides touching a flag? If you can mimic a master in sculpture or painting or photography...That is amazing. But, where is your voice in that? It separates the artist from the technician. Nathan:When you say "finite state of mind"...what do you mean? That means your mind has limitations. When you say time...What does that mean? These are super important questions. I think you have a fascinating source of material in where you live. (Based on our other conversations...) Defining America, defining North Dakota and Defining yourself in proximity to both of those looks like where you are headed. That's something that is uniquely yours. You know I am a fan, but I tell it like it is, bro...hahahaha p.s. Anything is better than Piss Christ. hahahaha I liked that btw. -

@nathancontephoto: There is no question that you have a great deal of technical ability. Just curious...Where do you live? Because, I think your rodeo images or some of the North Dakota images have a stronger political voice than the terrorist portraits or gun-under-the-flag type stuff. Images like the target practice and carnival are exciting to me, because I am so far removed from that way of life...and they don't look like you are trying to make a statement. It's effortless and real...with the right editing, you can make a real statement about what you care about. This is an article you might find interesting... http://whitehotmagaz...is-now-ps1/1602 Echoing Michaelwebster's comments...The flag is this loaded thing....I actually just heard a lecture about this recently. It's difficult to use these loaded symbols when you are trying to say something new. -

@photogrl: I applied to both MICA's summer and 2 year. I was shortlisted at both and interviewed with the summer program. I am actually thinking the summer program would fit best as I work in film and sound as well. They have some new faculty that came from Bard that work in sound...so...I am hoping. Did you do a non-degree seeking thing at GMU? Why are you reapplying? Just wondering. I actually think that I might pass on GMU for another program. I like it there, but I really care about exhibition opportunities and connections and working out of Fairfax is sort of a minus in my book. My backup school is Maine (full-funding), but I am holding out for MICA or VCU. @NWT1987: That question really is personal, because it relates to the work you do and the kind of work coming out of each program. I can only speak for the east coast schools, but MICA and Columbia are just amazing! I am sort of drinking the MICA kool-aid right now and really hope I get in, because their reputation is only growing. Every place I ever wanted to show, there seems to be a damn MICA alum that has beat me to the punch. lol! -

@Photogrl: Looky! We applied to the same programs, same discipline-sorta...I also applied to VCU and GMU, but I applied to Maine and MICA as well. I was interviewed at MICA on Monday and accepted at Maine on Wed. I did a residency with Sue from GMU, so she had already seen my work and offered me a tentative admission, but I am waiting to hear about the funding. Did you tour the new facility yet? It's a great new building and Sue and Peggy are awesome. GMU will supposedly make formal decisions in 2 weeks. VCU is taking their sweet time! Glad you are on the board. We can commiserate...hahah -

@Calliope: VCU...Really? Congrats! You are the first person to hear back from them on the board I think...Someone from photo called me and said interviews will be made in March. My friend applied to their Drawing dept. and she is interviewing at Yale, MICA and Bard but, hasn't heard back from VCU either. I wonder what this means. *over analyzes -

feeling pretty good. -
@James: Yeah...The price tag is a bit steep...She mentioned some fellowships, though. But, if you have a chance at full funding with a solid program...I'd take it. My professor used to say, go to a top program or go somewhere for free. UT is a solid program. If VCU can offer me full funding, that would be the only scenario that would have me turning down MICA. We just bought a house in DC and pretty much...it would be a dream come true because I wouldn't have to relocate. Good luck at your interview! Knock' em dead...

@kewpies: The room paintings and scene paintings are really beautiful and moody. Wow, really nice! -
@Loosenyourtalktapes: I was interviewed by the low-residency summer program. I also applied to the full time Photography program and will have an interview with them next month. They started interviews at Mount Royal/Hoffberger already but, the other programs are taking their sweet time. You might be in good shape! Do NOT give up hope. They'll probably get in touch with you soon. After talking with them, I am so excited and they are #1 on my list. Their new faculty is AMAZING. I came back from Art Basel/Nada in Miami this year and half the damn fair came out of MICA. It's an exciting time to attend for sure. best of luck!

@sophialab: Your stuff is hawt! -
For those applying to MICA: My interview went well today. We'll see what happens. Decisions will be made in two weeks. Basically the questions were about my process and influences. I have a minor in Art History and two studio disciplines and she wanted to know a little about the coursework I took. We talked about the direction of my work and the faculty had some interesting ideas... They definitely want to see some art history foundation, that you've been seeing other work and that you can articulate where you fit into this "moment" in art. There are 6 spots and she mentioned the list for interviews was about 50. The summer MFA program just added two professors from Columbia and Bard in video installation and sound. Crossing my fingers...I want this soooo bad.

Go RKSlim! You are having a great week... @James: Thanks, man! I am interviewing on Monday over Skype for the Summer MFA. I already met with faculty at the Open House. I live about 45 minutes away. But, my interviewer teaches at MICA & SAIC...So...she will be doing Skype interviews from Chicago. The other program for Photo I am suppose to schedule after this meeting for sometime in March. That one will be in person. We already talked for a while about my work and she asked me alot about where I see my work going. She said to think about it over the weekend and bring my thoughts to the interview on Mon. Good luck to you! If you want, we can chat after mine on Tuesday if you wanna compare notes...but, I think it's questions relating specifically to your body of work. -

@Cooper: !!!! Someone from my residency was an AIR at Rijkacademie...Really amazing. They are on a class trip to Egypt right now. How wild is that?~Good luck! @Turnip: Yeah, I hope VCU doesn't take too long...I am waiting as well. Don't feel bad about the rejections. You still have two more to go! and there's always next year,too... -
