  1. Hi cathy. I got your PM and im going to give my opinion without explanation here anyway. Out of those schools that you got accepted to, I would think Michigan and UCLA are probably the strongest for your field of focus (Chinese Labor). For a more detailed explanation, go look at the msg i sent lol
  2. Absolutely. I completely understand where you are coming from. I recently had a conversation with the director of the mpp program at ucla, since i was trying to weight the decision between ucla and cornell (my options). He told me that ucla's career service center now has a person full time working on behalf of students attempting to get jobs, but most jobs are extremely competitive (the ones they have) and a lot of them tend to be on the west coast, of course. Some of them also tend to be in DC, but these are competitive, as u may expect. He told me that if i wanted a job in NY or philly or just anywhere in the east coast, cornell would be the better option (as i would imagine georgetown would be for you). I am still unsure. I havent said yes to either school. UCLA is in my comfort zone since i have been here for undergrad but I dont know. its a tough choice! Any other questions or concerns? I am an undergrad here at ucla, so i know what im talking about lol
  3. i have a lot of knowledge of uclas program, but i want to know what you love and hate about it so that i can elaborate more on your loves and hates lol
  4. you'll get in. im going to give my spot away this week, i think, since i think i am going to decide on cornell. edit: good luck
  5. lol yeah, i have a class there right now and that thing is built in the 70s, hasnt been remodeled since.
  6. im sorry but thats a straight up lie. professors are too busy with their research work to care. Moreover, a lot of professors in ucla's public policy department are professors from sociology, polisci, econ, etc, (trust me, i know--i am a student there) so they wont exactly know how to help you find a job lol.
  7. I find your statement really informative and its something that I have known about UCLA for a very long time. If you read a couple of posts up, i am a current ucla student and just got recently accepted at the mpp program, and UCLA practically has no career service center--well, they do, but its practically worthless. I am just wondering about what you said: "if i had known then what i do now," well, what do you know now? lol is duke not providing you with a proper amount of social capital? Do you feel that ucla is worthless in terms of career services? speak up! haha
  8. just got my rejection letter. i suppose if u didnt hear while they sent out the acceptance in the first wave last week, rejections/waitlist are this week. the latter might be your fate lol
  9. Hi. i got accepted into ucla yesterday w/o any funding, mostly because my gre score was terrible lol (lets not talk about it please--but my gpa is very high, probably 95 percentile). I am also a LA native and i am a current student there, but i was accepted at cornell with 70% tuition funding, so i don tknow, the decision is a tough one. They are technically the same price for me (since ucla is a public school and cornell is private but cornell gave me some money so it equalizes it). From experience, i can tell you that the MPP program at ucla is a solid one academically speaking but one of the things that i hate about ucla is the fact that their career service office is pretty much non existent--well, did i say pretty much? I really meant it doesnt exist haha! They also charge students a fee to use their service, which sucks. Another thing that i am not too thrilled about is the fact that the ucla name is regional, meanign that on the west coast is carries a lot of weight but when you go east, i dont think people care as much. I feel like ucla is the type of school that you kinda just do your own thing and the school pretty much doesnt care about you--that has been my experience so far as a undergrad. I love the people i have met, but i dont feel much solidarity. I dont know, maybe i just like being babysat but thats just me. Its all about preference.
  10. hi. i normally dont reply to any forums...im just an onlooker. But i can say that I saw my recommender work on my recommendation for CMU...while your professor is right in saying that there were short answer questions, there was also an "optional" section where you can upload the whole letter of rec. My professor didnt add anything in the short answer questions and went directly to upload the letter. It was super easy and finished quickly. This is what CMU's website says: Also, sorry to hear about your recommender. I hate it when professors dont care about you and you put in all that effort in your app. Hope for the best
