  1. I think that most college towns are characterized the same way. I'm simply going to find an area in relative proximity to the campus where I feel comfortable. I'm pretty excited as well.
  2. Hello all, There have been far too many views of this topic for so few comments. I'm no longer looking for a roommate (I've decided to live alone) but I would like to start chatting with others who will be starting in the fall. I'm starting the PhD program in Family Science.
  3. This is the machine I'm using right now. I've only had it about a month, but I love it. Its light (which makes a HUGE difference to me after 2 years in a masters program) and it responds very well. I usually prefer laptops with the 10-key pad, but I've gotten used to not having that. The keypad feels pretty good, good spacing. I love the touch screen. The battery life has been great, however I only do word processing and web browsing, not a gamer at all. I originally purchased the 11in, but that was a bit too small for me, so returned for the 13.6in model (with the faster processor). Hope that helps, I'm not a techie by any means. But I'm use my laptop constantly and have no complaints thus far.
  4. I am very happy with my recent Dell purchase. And I caught it on sale at Office Depot for $620.00 http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2473725,00.asp
  5. Agreed. I have surely developed two new ulcers in the last two weeks.
  6. I've just sent my acceptance and declination emails (declined offers at two universities), and I was filled with anxiety the entire time! My "gut" decision to attend the school I accepted has been unwavering since my interview. However, the stipend wasn't what I was hoping (considering the cost of living). The cost of living at the other two choices made their otherwise comparable stipends more attractive, but I'm not as passionate about the programs or the research of the faculty. Because most of us applied to multiple programs, I think we all know that we could "make it work" where ever we choose, however, at this stage in my academic career (and personal life) I want to be somewhere where I'm happy, even if a little broke temporarily. I think my heart rate is slowly returning to normal...
  7. I would just like to reiterate here for all those, like me, who have sucky GRE scores that getting accepted to PhD programs is possible despite your scores. I was accepted into 3 programs this seasons (after a shut out last year). I applied to 6 programs. My quant score was 144. 2 programs questioned me directly about my scores. But all three programs stated that I was a strong candidate and they were impressed by my background and research experience. Additional, I must pat myself on the back for a great SoP. That said, don't lose hope. Strengthen the areas that you can and highlight your assets. Yes, we are all aware that some schools use the GRE to weed out candidates and reduce the application pool, but I am proof that the "total package" matters as well.
  8. I received informal email on 2/27. My letter with funding info arrived via postal mail yesterday.
  9. My quant score was in 20th percentile. I was accepted into one PhD program and expect a decision Fr. My top choice on Friday. I, too, was asked about my low score at the end of a day full of interviews. However, my scores were a few years old and I've completed a masters with quantitative thesis, so it wasn't held against me.
  10. So, I couldn't take it any longer and reached out to the program I've been waiting from. The DGS told me that the full faculty is meeting on Wednesday to make admission decisions and they hope to send out first round of offers on Friday. I guess I can "relax" until Friday now.
  11. Try not to freak out??? Riiiiiiight :-)
  12. Ouch. Sorry. I'm still waiting post interview, too (Feb. 3). My blood pressure just shot up...
  13. Ah, that sounds interesting. I considered graduate housing but I just wasn't sure. Lived on my own for quite some time (I'm a bit older) but I want to keep expenses as low as possible while I'm there.
