Not selected for Germany research grant. So it goes! Congrats to all accepted.

Congrats to Czech Republic grantees!! Just noticed in the spreadsheet.
-
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :-)

what's your insider knowledge?

Woops. It was 2014-2015. Very sorry all! (However, I bet there is only a nominal difference in applications between the years. It's still a large feat regardless!) And yes, Tawaintroubadour, the magical thinking in this group is outstanding! The enabling aspect is fantastic.

Just a general statistic for y'all. I tallied the application rates by region and 5,044 applicants applied for research this year (if my math is correct). So...for even getting through this first round -- congratulations to everyone! Same goes for ETA.

Hey Mylime, A friend of mine is an ETA in Sarajevo this year. While this is drawing only from her experiences, I think you'll be just fine if you decide to change a side project for ETA. I don't think Fulbright is too concerned about the side projects anyway-- you're primary responsibility is the teaching.

Hi ladies, I'm applying to Berlin. I did my masters research there and would like to go back to continue investigating my thesis question.
-
Sending all solidarity vibes. Hopefully you can burrow yourself in the papers. Viel Glück!

I'm not sure I can wait two more full weeks. My job is boring enough that I can refresh this forum every five minutes. @psych_33: I'm another German research hopeful, and also a Michigan alumna. Go blue! Hope things work out for us.

@ mmalloy: I used to live two blocks from where your profile picture was taken. Some major Berliner love here.

Mike A. just posted in the Excel that he has a grant to Indonesia. Congrats, Mike!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!

Not necessarily the best news, but in 2008 most notifications didn't start until 3/28. I'm bracing for another two weeks in hopes to be pleasantly surprised.

Without immersion: -Children's books for miles! Not cheesy at all. Whatever can get you there -- and if you're a beginner the confidence boost can be necessary, and will come with easier material - Anthologies of short stories with translation on the following page. (When I lived in Germany I tried to brush up on Spanish and learn German with such a reader -- wouldn't recommend this overly ambitious type of learning unless you are completely fluent in the first language, which I am not) - MOVIES - MUSIC - Friends you know that speak with native tongue, and won't berate you for your terrible accent and fumbled grammar. And find it amusing to teach you things - Radio (if either your stream or live somewhere that has a local radio station of the language of choice) What's worked best for me is working the language from a labor of love. For me this is reading poetry and short stories, watching movies, and hanging out with friends. German rap went a bit too fast for me... Plus the cultural knowledge in all of these activities is way more nuanced than any standard textbook or online program (which I wouldn't discount, however...Duolingo has taught me a thing or two along the way). Let's hope for something on Friday! I feel like FSB might want to get something out by the end of the week. Then again, this is ALL IN MY HEAD. In solidarity!

Hi all, Apologies if this has been covered previously. Does anyone know if DAAD study grants compete with Fulbright German Research grants in terms of the timeline of decisions? Meaning, do the two programs compete to get their applications out before one another in order to entice successful applicants?
-
To clarify, the e-mail that was sent to your friend Viggosloof -- did they give them any other date to get the transcripts in by?
-
Out of curiosity, by when did they say was the final date that they needed to have their transcripts in? (If they did give a date)
-
Thanks. Oof, that's rough! I guess that might explain why a rush of country notifications came on the same days last year.
-
Does anyone know if there usually a large lag time between country decisions and IIE notification?
-
Hahaha, yes. Exact. Exact. The agony!
-
Cannot wait to hear from the next newly awarded grantees Any day now! We can do this folks!

Despite my attempts to remain level-headed, I'm imagining I'll have a Michael Scott contingency plan conjured up sometime soon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqJbhvL293M

I've had this same type of magical thinking in my head too. That being said, it seems that it can be backed up with statistics. In the years that the first acceptance was sent out early (give or take a few days from the third Friday of January), a cadre of countries sent the final acceptances out earlier as well. If the trend continues, it does seem likely that notices for these countries will begin rolling perhaps a week or so earlier than the median of past dates. I particularly was eyeing countries with a large number of grants traditionally allotted, and this logic might be spotty with less sought-after countries. With that in mind, however, I realize this is my way of trying to apply a modicum of control to a process that clearly we all have no control over. Parsing out probabilities of notification won't shake the ambiguity of the impending life decisions this notice will trigger for me, nor will it salve my currently muted pre-gloom of highly-probable rejection. Still, I take value in reading these posts because it helps me realize that my anxiety is in communion with everyone else scattered around the world waiting with baited breath. I propose a toast to everyone waiting: if acceptance comes, that will be terrific, but if we happen to receive rejection, which many of us will and already have, let’s usher it in as opportunity. What seems very big right now to many of us won’t really matter in the future. I hope to take an acceptance with as much composure as a rejection.
