Hi! I actually went to BMC, hahaha. We used to have a grad program in English but they discontinued it decades ago, haha. We do have some really strong graduate programs (social work, russian, art history, classics, art history, etc), but US News got this one wrong (surprise!).

You don't sound like an asshole at all! I think that's what's so difficult about this process-- because there are so many applicants and so few spots, it seems to come down a bit to the luck of the draw. Not that we haven't all worked hard (and accepted students should be proud!), but the nature of the way adcoms, etc, work means that a rejection can be a little arbitrary-- maybe they accepted too many Americanists (or whatever) last year, maybe a POI you'd love to work with had no contact with the committee, maybe they figured you'd get a better offer elsewhere. It sounds like you're an awesome candidate, and I'm sure you'll get some great offers this year; if this is, indeed, an implied rejection, it's Brown's loss!

Just got my official rejection from Columbia! Also, I got an email from gradadmissions@chicago.edu yesterday and I steeled myself for my official UChicago rejection, only to find that it was a newsletter from their graduate school on "Choosing The Right Graduate Program." Just seems like they're rubbing salt in the wound at this point, haha.

I did the same thing to the POIs that emailed me after asking a friend-- I said that I was super excited about their offer, couldn't wait for the visit days, and that I'd reach out with questions if I had them. Figured it was better to keep myself on their radar! I did have a question on that note, though-- I got an email today from a POI welcoming me, but as they wrapped up their email they mentioned that they'd love to hear more about my research. Normally I'd email back with a variation of the above response, but should I go more in-depth? I don't want to just reiterate what I mentioned in my SoP/WS since they clearly read it, but I don't want to respond and ignore that point, either. Any thoughts? Ahhh!!! Congrats-- all I know about Santa Barbara I learned from Psych, but they made it seem amazing, haha.

Thanks so much! I'm lucky in that my boss is a (former? can you ever really be former?) medievalist, so I hope they'll understand that now's a good time for me to go back. Just nervous to say "oh, yeah, I applied to a lot of grad schools and never told you; also I'm leaving in a few months, sorry!" But it'll all be worth it in the end!

So, I'm finally going to bite the bullet tomorrow and tell my boss I'm leaving at the end of the academic year (I work in higher ed, but on the admin side). I didn't want to reveal that I was applying to school just in case nothing worked out, but I think I need to tell them sooner rather than later. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Any advice?

Ugh, I feel your pain. I found the first half pretty interesting but by the time I reached the end I was left with the impression that it coulda been waayyyyy more succinct. Have you tried The Secret History?

Hi all! I've been lurking on the forums since application season/haven't really dived into the community yet, but I figured now that it's officially February (!!!!) I'll need the therapy of this group to get through all the stress. So far I've heard nothing from most of my schools (which probably means a rejection from Chicago), but I received an offer from Northwestern today after spending the last few days in a results-board-induced-despair. Thanks, WT, for that incredibly helpful link. Does anyone have any insight on visiting weekends? Do schools usually fund your travel or is it more of an out-of-pocket thing? Good luck to everyone still waiting, and congrats on these great acceptances!
